Speculation: Would Mac Brown...

have been fired if they don't put another second on the board? They had a timeout and if Suh didn't break the interior the game would have been over.

Mac has a national title and a ton of seasons with 10+ wins.

One colossal screwup though could have sent him packing. Or would it have? This is only speculation, but I just wanted to gather everyone's thoughts.

EDIT: Damn it. I tried to make this a poll, but it didn't work.
 
I think Mac would have stayed, but would have had to fire his OC even though it was his call to run off time or not.

Would he have thrown Colt under the bus? I don't think he would have, but it would have been too much for a 22/23 year old to handle.
 
I very seriously doubt it. The decision not to kick a play earlier MIGHT be arguable (although really the problem was just not getting the play off faster, which appeared to be more on McCoy...), but there is no way it's bad enough to fire a guy with Mack's track record. Nor is losing the Big XII title game.

I half expected this post to start out "... come to Boulder". I was getting ready for the best laugh I've had in years.... :lol:
 
Texas before Brown wasn't as good as they have been. Fans forget that though and have short memories. Look at how many people bitch and complain that they don't have more Big 12 titles and Mac is a loser (are you ****ting me? He should have more titles though).

Coker was out at Miami just a few years after he won them a title. Carr won a title at UM, but failed to beat OSU over the past few years and had a down year (not as bad as with Rich Rod) and he was "let go." Free Shoes University let go of Bowden and they are 10 years removed from a title. Yes, Mac has not fallen off as far as those guys did, but fan expectations are higher than FSU and Miami. UM, well, not as much, but they do boast the winningest football team in CFB history.
 
Good god, the man made it to another Big 12 championship game. That doesn't happen as much as it should for a man paid that kind of money who can bring in those kind of players. If anything the "retirement" clock would be ticking a little faster but they're going to need some stability with several huge team leaders graduating. With Colt, Shipley, Ulatoski, Houston, Kindle and Muckleroy all out of eligibility, it wouldn't be the right time to tell Muschamp "Okay, it's your turn to take us to the BCS title game in 2010."

Post-script: After the 2005 season, the man is bulletproof. He can go out whenever the hell he wants now.
 
Mack Brown should have more Big 12 titles than two but he lost one to us.:lol:

Still, the guy has a national championship over ESPN's greatest team in the history of football ever ever ever and has won at least 10 games a year for, how long? His bowl record is pretty good, too.

Horn fans would be pissed as hell to have lost to Nebraska (hell, they're pissed NOW) but he'd get another year at least, How many big bowls has Stoops blown and he gets more credit as a coach than Brown.
 
For perspective, I wasn't a CU fan in '94, but when our Coach Mac led the team to face kNU and lost I bet there was a ****storm in Boulder. This was before the internet scum (en masse) and I doubt CU's fanbase was ever as rabbid as UT's is now. We were the juggernaut (as was NU), but to this day you still here of how that team should have won. Coach Mac did something that no coach has ever done here at CU and may not ever do again, but you hear about how he wasn't a good gameday coach. The point is that you can never please everyone 100% of the time, but if you piss off the right people at the wrong time all hell can break loose.

I bet Brown would have "retired" as HC and moved to AD within 2-3 years if that happened and would have never lived that down.
 
I think it was pretty clearly on McCoy if anything, not sure what the coaching staff could have done differently except maybe not call a roll out with 8 seconds left. Then again, they called that play under the assumption McCoy wasn't too cool for the situation, they easily could have snapped it a few seconds earlier and with a timeout, it would be a non issue. If the time had ran out Texas probably just forces McCoy back to New Mexico or whatever border he was born on.
 
I think the plan is for Mack to become the AD when he's done to hand it over to Muschamp. Perhaps they would have forced him into the early shift to AD.

I talked to my buddy who is a UT alum. He feels that this may be Mack's last year anyways, especially if they win.
 
Given that Mack Brown has more wins than anyone in college football Since he's been at Texas plus a national championship plus several BCS bowl wins, the answer is no.

Not to mention that we were average at best for many years before Mack.
 
No he wouldn't have been fired, but the whining would have reached epic proportions.

He's had a solid career at one program and now approaching a hall of fame type one at this current program he's running. Just seeing him every week during the season the last couple of years and now this year it's obvious a lot of things have taken a toll on him since 2005. He's aged disproportionately.

A lot of the best recruits will commit once offered, so his job is easier in that respect. But setting out to prove that he can do it again without VY has been tough. And winning another trophy with consistent top 10 recruiting classes has eluded him since. After the loss to Tech and the controversy surrounding championship selections last year, he looks much more weathered and weary to me. If he wins another he may wish to go out on top. Of course he'll remain associated with the program for the rest of his life, like Coach Royal. Personally I say he doesn't stay past 2012. I don't know about this year (maybe he wants to see if he can win one in the next 3 with Gilbert and then step down), but it's looking like the guys who will sign in February may not graduate with the same guy at the helm.
 
No - he also claimed he was calling TO the whole time - that could have been another "review"
