From the Ralphie Report: NU game TV ratings were horrible

A link to some figures:

The overnight TV rating of 1.9 for this year’s game from Boulder was the lowest of the season for any college football game on ABC, and it marked the third time in four years that the NU-CU game drew the lowest ranking of any college football played on network television that day.

Predictably, NU-Colorado was crushed in the ratings by Alabama-Auburn, which drew a 4.8 rating on CBS. But the Illinois-Cincinnati lead-in on ABC drew a 2.5.

Not good news. We made a lot of money this season from TV broadcasts.

Well, when you put a ****ty product on the field, what should we expect? I don't think Bohn's going to secure 11 out of 12 on TV like he has the last two years again.

Unless of course we play a Sunday game followed by a Wednesday nighter then on Tuesday....

We thought the schedule was bad this year, just wait till next year when Mike can't sign TV contracts because the networks know we won't be worth putting on the tube since Hawk is back again....

Guess I'll be listening more to Johnson and Zim next year.

I didn't watch the game. I did, however, watch 'Bama-Auburn.

yeah I saw that yesterday.. If CU loses this national game you can forget ever getting it back.

Just more of an indictment on how bad Talkins has killed our program.. Unless your a Neb or CU fan why the hell would you watch that game?

I don't think we'll ever get to a point where the game will never be shown on TV but are we in danger of losing that national game on Friday afternoon? Absolutely.

I wasn't aware there was extra money for picking up a game. I thought the TV contracts were fixed fees. Please advise.

Essentially, the TV money is shared among conference schools. Bohn has bent over backward to ensure we get games on TV because of this. While every Big 12 team gets a base amount of money, some teams get more money beyond that amount. The more times you are on TV, the more money you get. National broadcasts net more money than regional broadcasts. We had at least five national broadcasts this season: CSU, Toledo, WVU, Okie Lite, and NU.

In-conference games the revenue is shared amongst all the teams.

It is the out-of-conference games where being on TV really matters.

Hmmm. I was wrong then. We still made some money off the Toledo, WVU, and CSU games. I guess even Wyoming was on FCS.

Conference teams have very little control over the conference schedule - so it makes sense that the teams don't have control of the television agreements either.

Teams can change the schedule if they want to. (ou/osu used to agree to move their
game to the last game of the season even though it was generally scheduled for earlier in the season)

If we don't get our act together quickly then we'll lose this game and the Big 12 will replace us with a better game to not lose the spot. I'm thinking OU vs OSU has a good shot at replacing us. A very good shot when you consider that OSU will be a decent to good team for the foreseeable future.

The battle for the North has to be in Lincoln next year. Better yet, we both have to be ranked.

I think CU could be entering a dark and dangerous time under the leadership of Mike Bohn and Phil DiStefano. Attendance seems stuck at 50,000 per game at Folsom and this year that was only achieved by a lot of give aways on the part of the AD. There were a lot of threats to not renew tickets and we will see how people follow through on those threats. Especially the ones who donate a lot of $$$s.

I don't think CU is as attractive a draw on national TV as they once were. If both Box office and TV revenue decline next year CU will be stuck with some big Budget cutting.

It will be interesting to see how many attend the CU-CSU game at Invesco..the game was sold out in the early days but has declined recently...with both teams being bad this year interest is declining in the minds of the casual fan who CU needs to buy about 15,000 tickets a game.

With Basketball attendance at almost nothing and no tourney spot other sources of revenue may be hard to come by.

We had nothing to play for on a national level. neb already had the North locked up. Meanwhile, Auburn was leading #2 Alabama up until the final minutes.

Not surprised.

What are the chances they would move UT/aTm back to Friday off of Thanksgiving night? Is that a change the schools wanted or is it basically there for TV? With UT/OU not being a candidate, I've got to think that would be the most attractive game the Big XII would have to offer for the spot CU/UNL has been in...

Or, CU could just get back on top and make the game attractive again...

50,000 per game is 90% of capacity. The powers-that-be at CU would be tickled pink with 90% of capacity.

When CU drops into the 70% of capacity range, they will start to show concern.

UT/aTm has historically been played on T-day. It was only until the Big 12 formed that they moved it to T+1. The UT/aTm game is incredibly lucractive I would imagine, with it being the only Thanksgiving CFB spot. No way the Big 12 gives it up. OSU/OU need to help us occupy the 2 slots that the Big 12 used to have on Friday. Would it be worth it for us to keep it even though that might mean an 10:30 or 11am kickoff like in years past? Given the way things are going we need to be on TV so yes it would be.

OU/OSU, Baylor/Tech, and KU/MU are all played on the Saturday after Thanksgiving now.

Baylor/Tech has absolutely NO national interest. Neither will KU/MU unless KU can get somebody to keep them at or above the level Mangina had them at last year. OU/OSU might have some appeal if both teams are at the top. The problem is that it doesn't have a local market even the size of Denver. It would probably have interest in the big Texas markets, though...

Even if it was a battle for the Norte I doubt it would have had high ratings. The Iron Bowl > anything the Big 12 can produce outside of the RRSO.
