ESPN reporting Nutt interested in KU job

Bad news for other teams in the Big 12 North if he gets the job. Can coach, recruit, PR - the total package. Shows how serious Sweet Lew is about producing a winning program.

He may not be a bad recruiter, but at Ole Miss he was blessed to follow Ed Orgeron, who is an AMAZING recruiter. Most of the top talent there was inherited by Nutt...

And has solid Texas/South recruiting ties.

He could own the North in fast fashion with CU down and out and NU with half of a ballclub.

true. Orgeron had 2-3 top 20ish classes in a row. also, Nutt pulling Snead off UT's bench didn't hurt. be a good hire for KU. seems kind of like a strange lateral move for Nutt....and he'll always be #2 to hoops in Lawrence.

It will be nice for another team in the north to have a nut on the sidelines, aside from the fuskers... :smile2:

The Big 12 North will be a walk on the beach compared to the SEC West. No Bama, LSU, Auburn, Arkansas every year, Nubby, KSU, ISU, CU instead.

Nutt's coaching acumen is overrated IMO.

I don't know, Nutt took Murray St. to two Ohio Valley Conference titles in four years. Spent a year at Boise, and won consistently at Arky. He hasn't been too shabby at Ole Miss. He's a solid HC in my opinion and he'd clean house in the weak sister B12N.

He has recruited TX like a mutha when at Arky, and he's miles better than Mangino, who would have been roasted over a spit in the SEC after a couple of years.

Please... his recruiting is subpar at best, he gets his team up for one or two games a year but his offense is elementary, and he doesn't develop qb's or a passing game. Oh and all those delay of game, false starts, and wasted timeouts that everyone out here hates about Hawkins, they happen just as often if not moreso with Nutt. He wants out of Ole Miss because Ed O's talent is leaving

that I agree with...

Nutt is a 8-4, 7-5 type of coach who might have one big season every four years.. I believe that record would be much more acceptable at Kansas than at Ole Miss who fired Cutcliffe after he had one losing year after winning 7/8 games every year. .

Well, RB, from your handle I can only assume you are an Arky fan also. I, for the life of me, wonder why Arky fan was so down on Nutt, my dad, who is an Arky alum, is the same way.

The guy won games at a .600 clip. Not the kind of success Meyer is having a Fla, and not Spurrier like, but a solid coach winning a heck of a lot more than he loses in the toughest conference in CFB.

Subpar recruiting? Darren McFadden, Felix Jones, Ahmad Carroll, Nutt brought in some pretty decent talent IMO.

Maybe Arky can do better, and they may very well have their guy in Petrino, but Nutt was a pretty damn good coach if you ask me. Arky was pretty much an also ran before he got there. He didn't take them all the way but it's not like he sucked either.

He'll eat up the B12N. Mangino couldn't tie Nutt's shoes...hell, what am I saying, Mangino can't tie his own, but you know what I mean.

You are exactly right... those big seasons came when he had a freak athlete from Arkansas that always wanted to be a Razorback... Matt Jones that committed as a junior, and Darren McFadden that committed before he junior year of high school. Nutt is a lazy recruiter that will stumble on a great player once every two or three classes. He will get his team up for 1 to 2 games a year though that they shouldn't win, but he also will lose 1 or 2 a year that he shouldn't. In all honesty it would be a good thing for CU if he went to KU. Mangino was a far better coach then Nutt.

I'm not going to get into a big argument on a CU board about Nutt... but below average recruiting is one thing. Of those guys you named, Carroll was the only one that Nutt actually went out and got from out of state, we got lucky on Jones after alot of teams backed off after he tore up his knee his junior year. Darren McFadden committed to AR as a soph and always wanted to be a razorback, regardless of the coach.

Nutt was barely over .500 in conference, a 2-6 bowl record while at Arkansas, losses to Vanderbilt, not even making a BCS game with arguably the best backfield in college football history (McFadden, Felix Jones, Peyton Hillis)... and there was alot of scandal that went on as well behind the scenes with the program. Here it is if you want to read it. http://realhognews.blogspot.com/

Oh and we are far more than an also ran as a program... we are actually a top 20 program all time historically.

I don't want to get into it either, Arky was my team growing up, still think Ron Calcagni is the ****. I know the deal with the Springdale mafia and all that other jazz.

Arky was a top 20 team until Jack Crowe showed up. Between him, Kines and Ford, Arky was a .400 ball club for nine seasons with a grand total of two bowl games, both losses.

Nutt wasn't the second coming of Broyles, but he wasn't the hack many Arky fan, including my old man, make him out to be JMO.

I think he'd work the Big 12N.

Nutt will start out fast (just like he did at Arkansas and to a lesser extent Ole Miss) at Kansas but I agree he is not a program builder.. His SEC record got considerably worse once Danny Ford's players left and he was building it with his..

If I remember correctly Nutt's 1st year he had Arkansas at 8-0 or something the year Fulmer won the NC at Tenn and had a couple of brain farts in game decisions to cost his team the game in Knoxville.

The guy brings a passion to the table and its not like he's a terrible coach.. He's just not a great coach but for Kansas its not a terrible hire.. I mean geez, they used to have Terry Allen for 6 years.

He'll keep Kansas at a 7-5 type level..

He stays at Ole Miss he'll be eventually passed by Petrino and maybe even Mullen at Miss State.

What killed our program and took years to come back from was Hatfield leaving a week or so before signing day to Clemson. I believe 15 guys that were committed at the time went elsewhere... left our program with basically nothing for a class... and that combined with leaving what had become a pretty weak SWC where only us and UT were the big boys, and going to the SEC, definitely made things rough. Danny Ford came in and slowly built the talent level back up, Houston Nutt happened to come in at the right time... just like he did at Ole Miss.

Nutt seems alright, not sure it's an upgrade over Mangino. Whoever is coach there next year is in for a serious rebuilding effort. No more Reesing, Briscoe, or Meier. I doubt even Mangino could get them to a bowl game next year.

Nutt is an average recruiter. Most of his big recruits never really considered going anywhere else. He will win 2 games every year he shouldn't but then he will lose 2 he shouldn't either. I would not put his x and o knowledge against any other coach in the SEC. He is great as a gameday motivator when he is a dog.

Nutt whipped your ass twice at Ole Miss 23 -21 in 08 and 30 -17 in 09. His level of competition will drop like a rock when he gets in the Big 12 North.
He will have a winning record.

That's probably a safe bet considering he couldn't get them to a bowl game this year WITH those guys.

He did beat us twice... with him having Ed Orgeron's players and us having the absolute crap he left at the program from the last three awful recruiting classes he brought in.

Question: How do you know your football team currently sucks?

Answer: When the hiring of Houston Nutt scares you.

:smile2:

His talent at Kansas also wont be as great as what he had at ole Miss. I like to think as Nutt as a Rick Neuheseil type. Can do decent at first with soemone elses talent, but not as good with his own. Nutt would be a downgrade from Mangino.

I don't buy it, GB won the Big 12 with Skippy's players. I never liked him, Skippy always struck me as a guy who enjoyed smelling himself.
He could recruit.
If you want to win as a football coach, the Big 12 North is a good hunting ground. Much more food to eat than the SEC, and no big cats to worry about.
