CA vs Texas HS football

I've heard various people say that DS played in a weak CA HS league and while was projected to be dominant his HS results didn't "show anything." I saw enough talent when he was here to believe that if coached up he would have been a force.

I digress though.

I see that our Cali QB Nick plays in the CCS. I looked it up, but it didn't seem to be a state title. In Texas I know that they play regionals and play for a state title. Do they not do the same in Cali? Are there many different leagues with their own titles?

Athletes are athletes, but that's why I like hearing reports of our recruits doing well in the all-star HS games in CA.

CA has 3 levels of state title game. Winner of the south in small school, mid level school and large school divisions play the winner of the north in those divisions. This is rather new beginning only 2-3 years ago. There was a state title game 70+ years ago but they ended it because they thought there were just to many teams. They revived it a couple of years back. All three games are played the same day at the Home Depot center in So-Cal.

Ok, but the question I have is that here in NM (and CO) there is 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A football. The 5A teams come from the biggest schools down to the smallest where 7 man football is played. Inside each division there is a regional title. You win that to get to the playoffs.

My question is though, is the CCS equivalent to a division? Does winners of it get to move on towards a state championship? There are a lot of great programs in CA, but are the divisions set up so that the good teams play one another or do a lot of them pick and choose (De La Salle's winnning streak for example)? Is that only for private schools? There are a lot of Mullen-type HS it seems in CA and they can cherry pick making for a stacked division or one with little parity. In Texas I don't get that impression as much.

California does not have state playoffs games.

We do have 5 State Bowl games, pitting the North vs the South.

The bowl games are:

Open
DI
DII
DIII
Small schools

California has 10 CIF Sections. Some Sections are very small, and only consist of one league each (The San Francisco and Oakland Sections).

The Southern Section is the biggest, with 398 teams. It is almost as big as all other 9 Sections combined.
Each Section has their own playoff format.
The Southern Section is split into 15 Divisions (Thirteen 11-Man, and two 8-Man), each with about 30 teams in them.

Each Division plays for a Championship.
Some of these CIF Divisions are stacked with some of the top teams in the country, while others are filled with much weaker teams. The PAC-5, Inland, Central, and Northern Divisions are the toughest.

The State Bowl game teams are picked with a BCS type process.
To be eligible, a team has to win it`s CIF Division title.

Some teams play in really weak leagues, and need to schedule tough pre-league opponants to boost their chance of getting a bowl bid.

Here is a great site that gives a power rating to every team in the nation.
You can see how the CIF Sections in California are broken down.

398 teams in a division? :wow:

Seems weird to not have a "true" HS champion. Since we recruit in CA a lot it's interesting to hear how things are played out.

Texas has 1A through 5A. The last I checked each classification has 32 districts. Each district's size varies, but most have 8-10 schools so you have 300+ high schools in the highest size/level of competition.

I went to a 5A school, so my knowledge can only speak about the playoffs in that classification. The top 3 schools in their district qualify for state playoffs after a 10 game season. To cut down on the length of the playoffs, 5A is then separated into "Division I" and "Division II." Of the 3 schools per district in the playoffs, the qualifying school from each district with the largest enrollment gets seeded in Division I. The remaining 2 from each go to 5A-Divison II playoffs. So in one division you have 32 teams and the other you have 64. Then they play at neutral sites each week until you have a champion. 5A and also 4A I believe have two state champions each.

Anyone with a better handle on TXHS football wanna tell me I'm full of crap and correct me? I feel like I missed a few things there.

I should add that the seeding and brackets also work in a regional format.

So,
Region 1: West Texas to Fort Worth
Region 2: Metro Dallas, North Houston metro, Northeast and North Central Texas
Region 3: Metro Houston and Southeast Texas
Region 4: South Texas, Austin & San Antonio

The winners of each region's bracket constitute the state championship's "Final Four."

Not sure why people think that, St. Bonaventure plays in a pretty damn good league.

Not sure if some of these games are out of league and thus weren't played when DS was there, but schools like Crespi, Jordan and Long Beach Poly are not weak competition by any means. Granted, Poly has been down the last few years, after being one of probably the top 5 HS programs in the nation before that. Westlake is also pretty damn good usually, and since DS won the title his Senior year, I assume they had to go through them to win it. Weak competition? No.

St. Bonney`s league is very weak.

Those teams you mentioned were non-league games, and St. Bonney didn`t play them when DS was there, except for Crespi, which was just an average team that year.

Fans in SoCal have been screaming for years to get St. Bonney and Oaks Christian to move to a tough league, and it will finally happen next year.

Thanks for the clarification. I knew some of those Ventura area teams were weaker, but looking at their schedule this year I assumed St Bonny played those types of teams every year. I suppose the next question would be, how does that league stack up again a league in another part of the country?

You mentioned the Inland league as tough competition, but I'm curious how much tougher that league really is. My alma mater plays in that league, Redlands East Valley, and when I went there we were a perennial doormat. We literally didn't win a single game for like 6 years or something, only when my class was Seniors did we start to win. Either way my point is, from what I gather, that league is not that great outside of REV, the Corona schools and Chaparral. So is that possibly how the Northern league is, mostly weaker schools with some good teans sprinkled in or is it just all bad teams with St Bonny standing alone?

The Northern Division is a lttle down this season.

Normally it has about six really good teams. The Foothill league is in that division, and they were always the powerhouse league with Hart, Canyon and Valencia, but they are down this year.

Moorpark and Westlake have really stepped it up. Westlake upset St. Bonney, and Westlake is mostly Soph`s and Juniors this season.

REV used to be a really bad team like you said, but then they hired Kurt Bruich as their head coach, son of Dick Bruich, legendary Fontana High coach.
Little Bruich immediately turned REV into a competitor.

REV is in the Citrus Belt League, which is very weak, but their league is in the Inland Division, which is very strong.

Corona Cenntenial, from the Inland Division, won the California State DI game against De LaSalle last season.

Yeah I was there the first year they hired Bruich. I remember talking to some younger guys who said he was a real douchebag, but he knew his football. Can't disagree with that seeing as how he turned an awful football school into one of the better ones in SoCal.

Interesting about Centennial, I knew they were good but that's damn good. What programs are tops these days anyway? I used to pay some decent attention when I was still in High School, but not too much anymore. Like I said earlier, I know Long Beach Poly has taken a dive in the recent years, I think their coach left for a college job or something. De LaSalle has always been a monster, I thought St Bonnys was, probably just because of Lorenzo Booker, though.

Long Beach Poly was the South rep in the State open game last season, so it`s just this year that they are down.

Edison and Servite are in the PAC-5 championship game this week.

A couple Temecula schools, Chapperal and Vista Murrietta are in the Inland championship game.

My son`s school, Upland, is in the Central Division championship game against Los Osos................and this is one year after Upland lost three DI players, QB Josh Nunes to Stanford, RB/DB Davion Fleming to Northwestern, and DB/WR Osahon Iribor to ASU, while Los Osos lost QB Richard Brehaut to UCLA, and RB Arby Fields to Northwestern.

Oaks Christian is a small school that somehow ends up with 5-10 DI recruits on their team every season.
Nick Montana, Joe`s son, is the QB. Wayne Gretzky`s kid is the back-up QB.
Will Smith`s kid is a reciever.
Tuition is $22,000.00/year..........yet somehow they get all these top athletes.
