Is this the worst it's ever been when you consider performance in all sports?
(weighted toward the revenue and publicity powers, Football and Men's Basketball)

I've been following CU athletics since the mid-1980s and I can't ever remember things being this bad.

I voted yes. I have been following CU since the 1960s and I don't think I have ever been so depressed regarding football and basketball. Football seems to be going in the wrong direction and I don't know what it will take in Basketball.

I would say yes. I started following in the late 80s. While basketball has always been a struggle for this school, football was always the one sport I could look forward to every Fall. Not the case any longer, just not a lot of hope right now.

We're just need to tweek some things.

You don't know how close we are to popping things.

We just need to give these things a little more time to jell.

We're doing things the right way.

Come on now. I know you guys get sick of me. But it WAS worse in the 79 to 83/84 years. But I can see that you younger whipper snappers haven't seen it as bad as it is right now.

Depressing is getting our ass kicked tonight at CSU. Keep it close against Gonzaga and UA (my second alumnus) and get worked by CSU? Barf.

I guess you memory is bad - Bill Blair was the BB coach in the beginning of those years and was starting to get some traction in BB...the 79-80 season was the winningest season the Buffs had in BB in 10 years. They were at least winning some conference games on the road and were in the middle of the pack in the Big 8. In 82-83 Jay Humphries was on the team and there were things to get excited about. Furthermore, From 1978 to 1983 women's basketball was dominant in the conference - 117- 41 overall and 44-9 in conference. CU was not as bad as now....

Honestly, I've never been a huge basketball fan, really. I just pulled up the records for those years. We were sub .500 for all those years, I think. But to make an analogy for this team, we have better talent than we've had in a while, it seems to me. That Burks kid, though he struggled tonight, and Higgins both look pretty good to me. I was getting pretty, oh, maybe "excited" isn't the right word, but encouraged about this team. And then tonight happened. I'm really at a loss, no pun intended, about what happened tonight. As for football, yeah, from '86 to '04 was pretty damned fun. So, compared to that stretch, it is pretty tough right now.

As for my memory being bad, that is an understatement.

I personally could not care less about hoops. My Horns are ranked #2 and I would trade that in a second for the CU XC team.
Too bad CU dropped tennis. That was a bad move.

this post is correct

things were real bleak when they cut baseball, wrestling, etc. along with a football team that sucked and a basketball team that was average at best

I voted no because of how low the football program was in the early 80's. And yes the program is pretty low now but this program only won 11 games in the 5-year span from 1980-84.

Looking forward to reading here

Us old timers remember the 80's and what we have now is very reminicent.

From a personal standpoint, once Mac started there were visible improvements and always provided the ability to have expectations the following season.

I don't have any for 2010, been through 7 coaches and hoping for an 8th......soon

Hell, even the XC team relinquished it's crown to Okie lite. If we can't even continue to win cross country titles, things must be bad.

The cycling and ski teams are our only hope now.

Good grief.

I still believe you'll be surprised in '10.

I would also go with 1980.

If you want the absolute nadir - look at October, 1980. Baseball, wrestling, gymnastics, etc., cut the previous summer. Buffs and their football coach, Chuck Fairbanks, blasted in a Sports Illustrated article (the office did look good!), and the winless football team celebrated a record-setting 82-42 loss to Oklahoma with a loss to ... Drake (for the second year in a row).

The basketball teams did have winning records that fall/winter, but that was not enough to remove the black cloud hanging over Colorado ... and its national reputation.

2009 is getting close to the worst time in school history, but, like everything else CU these days, it's just thisclose.

I don’t know if you follow XC, but Mark Wetmore is the man. You need to understand that Wetmore has his teams competing at the most elite levels on a very consistent basis and here’s the deal, he does it without bringing in ringers from foreign countries. Wetmore doesn’t have very much money to throw at scholarships so he relies predominately on Colorado kids. He makes champions. Nobody does more with less. That’s what I love about CU XC. They win with Colorado kids.

In these lower profile sports it really is all about the money. The schools with massive athletic budgets cherry pick the best kids from around the country (or world) because they can afford to offer full-ride scholarships even in the lesser sports. In other instances, you’ll have smaller schools which might not even have a football program, but decided to allocate their limited funds into other sports, like XC, and give full ride scholarships. Either way, it’s all about the money.

I voted no, just because of everything back in the late 70's to early 80's. Things were much worse around athletics in general when they dumped all the other sports, and we had Fairbanks all but destroying football.

Now don't get me wrong, Hawkins is trying his hardest to go down as worst ever. I still can't figure out how the womens BB team went from so good to so bad in such a short time. I don't know what it will take to get mens BB close to good. Just when you think they are making progress the get pounded by CSU.

"In football, you might get your bell rung, but you go in with the expectation that you might get hurt, and you hope to win and come out unscathed. As a distance runner, you know you're going to get your bell rung. Distance runners are experts at pain, discomfort, and fear. You're not coming away feeling good. It's a matter of how much pain you can deal with on those days. It's not a strategy. It's just a callusing of the mind and body to deal with discomfort. Any serious runner bounces back. That's the nature of their game. Taking pain."

Ah, my senior year memories!

I firmly believe that the most important thing pending for the CU athletic department is construction of the MBB/WBB/Volleyball practice facility. With those three sports, we have 1 in MBB that can be a significant money maker and PR generator and 2 that can pay for themselves and even gain some national notice (esp. WBB) if they can start drawing crowds. Plus, the 2 women's sports should be good if they can just keep most of the Colorado prep talent home (esp. volleyball). We get that done, we're looking at an athletic department that can actually start thinking about expansion.

Not yet but we are trending there! We have not hit 80's lows yet but there are not any other sports to cut either.

I know everyone loves Ceal Barry, and she did some great things. But toward the end, the program was slipping and quite a few players, like Weddle, left.

My comment was meant to be tongue in cheek, Wetmore is the best. I was just pointing out that after about a hundred championships in a row, it is a coincidence that Okie lite knocked CU from it's perch last year.

And to answer your question, no I don't follow XC even a little bit.

Exactly, the state of the WBB team is a direct correlation to Ceal's last 4 years.
