Kansas appears to have found a football coach.

Looks like it's going to be Turner Gill from Buffalo.

If true, this hire is going to be intersting. Gill has great skills as a life coach. He a good football coach too.

Whoops! Should have done it last year before going 5-7 themselves. Maybe they saved some money as Gill's stock has dropped some.

i think it's potentially a very good hire. he's more qualified than Mangino was when he was hired in 02. Gill is a legend as a player in the midwest, has HC experience, 3 rings with Osbourne as an assistant, and is.......wait for it....

from Texas. so, he should pick up right where Mangino did recruiting north Texas and Oklahoma for the "2's" that UT and OU don't go after....to fill out a depth chart with quality players. he'll also have the experience of working in and for a "big time" college athletic department that has demonstrated success with KU hoops. he'll always be #2, but it won't be the amateur hour/or marketing=reality we've had with Tharp and possibly Bohn.

I think Gill wil turn out to be a medicore coach at the BCS level. Even if you are Buffalo who was piss poor forever, you should be able to "coach 'em up" to get over .500...

It'll be interesting to see how he does at KU. While he didn't overwhelm at Buffalo, he did put that program on the map.

Wow, footballcoachscoop is reporting that Gill has hired Chick Long as OC and Carl Torbush as DC. Good hires for KU. It will be interesting to see what type of offense they go with now that Long's on board.

like the Chuck Long hire. never been a big fan of Torbush. would love to have seen this staff in Boulder, however. Long should be able to recruit to the QB position.

Gill will be a good coach. He not only put the program on the map, but he completely changed the program. Buffalo SUCKED (was ranked the worst team in DI some years prior), and now, it's a decent mid-level program.

Hawk took over a good program at Boise, and just did not let the ship sink. Apparently he also had a great assistant in Peterson as well. Gill's credentials are better than what I think Hawk had...although Hawk did look impressive when we hired him.

Just watched Montana/App St. We should have fired Hawk and hired Bobby Hauck. He will be the next Brian Kelly. He also has CU ties...what the **** is Bohn looking at when he sees our program. Im so psst right now - I had accepted Hawk returning, but Brown leaving just aggravates the wound all over again...

I am with Mick on this one. I like the Long hire, but Torbush leaves a lot to be desired, although his southern recruiting ties might help.

Torbush is noted to be a good defensive mind plus he is a good recruiter. He worked under Mack Brown at North Carolina.

I like the fact that Gill is putting together an experienced staff that has competed on the BCS level. Which I think has hurt CU over the last few years.

Gill seems to recognize the advantages of having former HC experience on his staff, as opposed to bringing in guys which whom he has a prior comfort level. That is the most impressive element of the hires, imo.

It's hard not to pull for the guy just a little.

i agree with your second point. also, guys familiar with the conference. Long was at OU and Torbush worked (and was canned) at ATM with Francione. i think he came from Bama with Fran, as well. the guy has a nice resume and he keeps getting jobs so someone must think he can coach.

i'm just not a fan of Torbush, mostly since he was lousy succeeding Mack at UNC and his ATM squads were pretty average at best (with considerable talent).

Denver Johnson is a former HC. That didn't get us very far.

A year ago, I like this hire. After a so so year this season, I think this is a reach.

True. I just wonder if Torbush is past his prime as a DC. He was horrible at A&M. I totally agree with your second point though. Having coordinators with BCS experience should help Gill in his transition to the Big 12.

:yeahthat:

What's surprising is if these reports are true then Gill wasted no time in getting these coordinators, meaning Torbush was likely one of his first choices for the position. Surprising he didn't beat Zona to offer Greg Brown if he was moving that fast.

It's a "no-win" situation for Kansas. If Gill consistently beats Nebraska (and that's kinda the goal, isn't it?), it won't be long until Nebraska will be looking for a new coach. Guess where the NU administration will look? Kansas would be the victim of its own success ...

So you are saying if/when Bo crashes, TG will take over.

Not a bad proposition for Nebraska. But Bo will be around for a while and will win his share of football games right where he is at.:thumbsup:

It appears TO is a heck of an AD if what you are saying happens.:smile2:
