"The Sporting Chancellor" (required reading)

I have linked an article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel from this
Christmas morning about Donna Shalala. When Shalala became
Chancellor at the University of Wisconsin she strongly believed that
outstanding athletics should go hand in hand with outstanding
academics. Then she went out and got it done. The article describes
some of things she accomplished at Wisconsin and now continues to
accomplish at the University of Miami.

This is required reading for Benson and DiStefano. I will send an
email link to both of them. I will also send a hard copy of the
article to them in the regular mail.

AllBuffs readers who also wish to send it to Benson and DiStefano are
welcome to do so. Maybe they will actually read it if they receive
it enough times. It is a shame that Mike Bohn is trying the best he
can, but support from DiStefano doesn't seem to be there out in the
open. We all know that Mike Bohn was sucker punched by Benson. I'm
not foolish enough to believe the denial from Benson's PR guy.

Merry Christmas to all.

Wasn't she also the Chancellor at Miami when they got in that huge fight/riot before the game against South Florida, I think it was?

Thanks for the link, Buffalo30. Folks spend so much time criticizing Hawkins, but at least I'm sure he's giving his all.

Benson and Distefano on the other hand are promoting mediocrity (read their quotes if you have doubts). As fans and alums, this is where our displeasure should be directed.

This makes for an interesting thread theme:

What are the various arguements for or against the role of football and college athletics towards the success of an institution of higher education.

Here's an article regarding UNC-Charlotte. This school is a have not, and sees sports as a key to success.

Georgia State (who?) wants to get a football team: What is Dan Reeves doing now?

This study concludes there is no positive economic impact on a community based upon the existance and winning percentage of a football program.

College athletics cost outstripping revenue. Economic crisis and review inevitable. Only 19 D-1 programs are profitable. Are college athletics a frill universities can't afford?

Shes been there since Clinton left office.

Funny how my threads get merged and someone else above me does not....

Knight Commission Report on college athletics.

It's lengthy read that probably has been combed over at the CUAD.

Controlling expenses is the name of the game.
- Costs increasing >7% annual rate
- Reductions in capital expendatures are anticipated. Schools burdened with interest payments on recent expansion.
- Non-Rev men's sports. Fewer programs, fewer schollies.
- Travel by bus, closer to home.
- When academic programs and faculty are being cut, pressure mounts to cut the athletic dept. 10% cuts hitting Cal State programs, New Orleans, others.

Revenue issues
- Hope ESPN/CBS and other networks are too big to fail. Those contracts are critical.
- Pay to play has non-rev sports seeking private funding.
- Student fee inreases being voted upon. >$400 range

It's not in the article, but my speculation in reference to the economic issues that are a result of the broad economic environment compounded by season 4 of the Hawkins era.

- Look at cutting travel for non-rev sports. Smaller travelling teams. Scheduling closer to home.
- Look at cutting academic programs for athletes (tutoring)
- Look at cutting back on videographers, equipment managers, other support staff
- Look at number of assistant coaches in non-rev sports
- Consider freeze on raises. Caps on new hire salaries
- Outsourcing of merchandise, stadium advertisements, PR to sports management
- Careful review of any capital expansions
- Review position on conference rules: Across the board caps on FB salaries; Increase # of camps and use proceeds to cover greater percent of coach salaries. Network agreements; Revenue sharing; minimum # of varsity sports
- Review position on NCAA rules: Further reduction of scholarships below 85. Conference re-allignment. Expand # of games/season.
