Official Visits Tally Thus Far

We are allowed 56 official visits.

So far, 40 visits have been taken or scheduled in this cycle.
(I'm including Hemschoot and Harrington's scheduled visits on Jan. 8, and Tony Jones on January 15.)

40 visits from 56 allowed = 16 visits still available for CU to host

Of the 40 visits taken/scheduled, we have 14 commits. Roughly 1/3 of visitors have committed.

10 committed elsewhere
16 remain officially uncommitted last time I checked - so our percentage of commits to visits could go up.

Remaining weekends for visits (before national signing day Feb 3.):

Jan 15-17
Jan 22-24
Jan 29-31

I've been wondering: assuming the guys would take the visit, who would you use the final 16 visits upon? I assume we would hold 5-6 visits in the pocket for a JC or odd situation that comes up later in the spring or summer (ala Will Jefferson), so let's say there are 10 to burn.

Who would you want to see set foot on our campus in the next 4 weeks?
Would you invite guys up and take a chance at this point they can be swayed?

I hope the guys they bring in for official visits in this last month are guys that either have offers or will get an offer on the trip. This coaching staff is a little bit annoying with the practice of bringing in guys on official visits, letting them leave without offers, and then ceasing contact. I hope at least 7-8 visits are banked for next season.

I hope they have a couple more guys coming in each weekend to make it more interesting for the recruits. The guys they meet on their visit are potential teammates, so it always seems to help when there is a larger crowd of recruits all at once.

For the guys coming Jan 15-17 -- Men's Basketball plays Kansas State in Boulder 1/16. The other weekends there is either no game, or it's an away game.

To illustrate, here are guys that have come in for visits and have left in weird circumstances:

Matt Farris
Kurt Davis (dropped contact after the visit)
Thomas Street
Conner Glenn (not sure if it was an official visit)
Nelson Gammage (dropped contact after the visit)

Then there are the four Covina kids where there is a question of whether or not they have commitable offers:

Brandon Golden
Keith Smith
A.J. Powell
Adam Muema

How is it possible that we potentially use 9 of 40 visits thus far on guys we may not actually want in the end?

I don't know. It's weird. That's why I was puzzling over it. I remember last year they brought in Stanley Jean-Baptiste (something like that) late and never offered him either.
You think an official visit means they really plan to offer, but I guess the coaches are also sizing up attitude and personality ... or they are also slow-playing the player hoping that another better guy comes along.

I just think with only 14 commits and about 3 weeks to go, we should be getting more guys in here.

I am impatient.

Don't need to worry about saving any. I believe we've got some banked from last year.

My guys who are on the list and I'd love to get out for a visit: Sealii Epenesa, Foi Foi, Venric Mark, Saqwan Edwards, Bryce Hager and Kris Rice.

I'd like to see steed, holland, williams, mcghee, figures, campbell, bienemy, stewart, westbrook, johnson and detmer get the last visits.

I understand wanting to size some players up before offering. But using nearly 25% of the official visits in that fashion is a bit bizarre. I also agree we should be getting more guys in here. Our newest commit, Tony Jones, is visiting on January 15th. We should be getting some other guys in that weekend so he can get in their ear.

I totally agree. Nothing like a top player, excited about being a buff, to infect others. Get some kids in here!

BB - can't agree. We are selling recruits, but also sizing up their ability to fit in. High number this year though does seem unusual, but if you take out the 4 that visited from one school who are a package deal and the Windsor kid who is being recruited, but probably as a walk-on - it seems ok to me. I see this as one of the positives of how we currently recruit, albeit in a very difficult situation.

Don't see any reason to hold back more than 1 of our 56. If we can find 56 kids who are good enough and willing to seriously consider......

Well yeah, if I take out five of those, the numbers look a lot better. But you can't just take those five out. They still count. I am fine with sizing up some recruits, but I think the approach can backfire. For one, it can alert other schools that you are halfway serious about prospect so it might make them take a closer look at that prospect whom still does not have an offer from CU. At the same time, for a kid you might actually want in the end, you are basically saying "we want you... kind of". Not exactly a vote of confidence. JMO.

A lot of it's a game. Kid doesn't want to visit unless he has an offer. Coaches don't want to offer unless he visits and they can size him up. When you're coming off a 3-9 season and need to find hidden gems, that means you're going to want to size up a lot guys you're not sure of. So far, the staff has done a good job this year of pulling in verbals from guys who are under-recruited but have the measurables and athleticism of a Big 12 athlete (who also seem to be good attitude guys). That's not easy to do. It may not be the normal way of going about recruiting and it's hard for fans to track & predict, but it seems to be allowing us to pull together a better-than-expected class this year. I'm actually starting to get excited about what we'll end up with this cycle.

Is it just me or do they try to bring in a few teammates with the idea of trying to really only get one of them? With the Compton kids it seemed like the prize was Kevin Smith, he commits to Washington and we drop contact with the rest of them. From what I can tell, the prize with the Covina kids seems to be Brandon Golden. If we don't get him are we still after the other three? Doesn't seem to me to be the best way to recruit.. but what the hell do I know.
