Hawk to be on Austin ESPN Radio tomorrow

I'll reserve judgment until I get to listen or read the transcript.

But it sounds like a net win for the program.

I kind of wish that Hawkins would have given them a "Go Big 12! Hook 'em Horns!". That would have bought him some good will in Austin, I think. And we're a long way from competing against Texas for their in-state targets so I don't see where it would have hurt us.

Hawk did toss out a big Hook 'Em! at the end. I didn't think it was relevant to report...

Sorry guys - listened to it on the way home (4 CST) and just got tot he computer (Ms. NB96 was on.)
Anyway, not a whole lot to be said. A lot of rah-rah for UT (of course) and a lot of typical Hawklish. Even said that all UT has to do is get the "little things right" and they would win the game. aik called it as Aaron Hogan WAS on and conducted the interview so it truly was about 8 minutes of nothing.

Some of the low-high, high-lowlights:
Opening - "Hey coach! You getting excited? (clearly meaning for the game) Hawk: "Well, you know recruiting really has us going!"

"Hey, coach between you and Nebraska, you guys had the best defense against Texas all year, what weaknesses did you see?" Hawk: "WEAKNESSES?!? Texas really has no weaknesses. Just a matter of play here or there and we had a good showing against them."

Hogan and Dan Neil lauded Hawk for keeping his job saying he's good for the Big 12 North and the Big 12 overall becuase he's getting it done the "right way." They (Austin talking heads) were very happy that he was retained. (Insert true meaning here.)

Other than that, for the most part a pretty "blah" interview. He did say "little things" like 4-5 times, mentioned something about "conflama that surrounds the kids," (general quote nothing specific) and he got into his Zen no peaks or valleys thing once too when asked how to keep players focused on a big game.

In all, no embarrassment to us (CU) and no "completely burned to the ground" doozies., and no other interesting quotes or recruiting insights (which of course he can't talk about)

Overall Grade: C-. Which is better than the series of FAILS he had at the end of the year:huh:.

I'll watch the website tomorrow and post a link of the interview if they put one up. Looks like they will. :blah:
I mean this with all due respect because you are a great Buff, but I'll take your "grade" with kind of a grain of salt because you ****ing hate Hawkins.

No problem, DBT. But it seriously was very vanilla. I graded on what a general interview would grade at. I f I were grading against the shtick he was pumping at the end of the year, it would have been closer to a B.

But I consider this to be a new year for him, so for his first time out playing to a "friendly" (i.e not CU fans ) crowd, it was definitely a C-. :blah::blah:

Hawk good for the North and Big 12? Yeah, if you are the other 11 teams its a nice win every year..

Hawk saying recruiting has us really going? LOL, yep he must be working hard for all those in-state prospects..

Hawk should be fired on the spot for even saying "hook'em".. The guy is the Colorado head coach, not a Texas or Big 12 cheerleader.. Embarrassing..

Is there anything Hawkins could have said you would have commended other than "I am resigning from CU"?

I did a bad job at coaching, 3-9 is unacceptable, I'm working my tail off to fix things, I'm changing my coaching staff so we can get better.

hawkins saying "texas has no weaknesses" really pissed me off. it reminded me of "how do you defend against missouri's offense?" "you can't" right before 58-0. the guy is just not smart enough to be a successful bcs coach.

So other than the obvious poor job performance last season, your big issue with Hawk is you don't feel like he's taken accountability for it (or gotten rid of coaches who he didn't feel got the job done either)?

I'm curious whether that's right and whether that is the big problem others are having, too. If so, would it make a difference to you if he publicly laid out his plan to fix this thing? Would that at least get you to be neutral toward him until you see how the team performs against CSU?

Or is it really a lost cause?

You've hit the nail on the head. I have Hawk fatigue when he's off the field. He's a broken record. You know what he's going to say. And then he says it. Thrown into the fire. Turn the corner. About to pop. Margin of error. Gasher. Great practice. Horns out. Lunch box. Blue collar. Little things. Clean things up.

When he diverges from his public personna bulletpoint script, he lapses into embarassing or hostile gaffs. You're not a coach. You aren't taking risks. Internet Scum. Trust only goes so far. Real fans wear Black and Gold.

I've said it before. Hawkins would be well served to hire a media consultant who can help polish his message and delivery. I would like to get more candor and less philosophy. I'd like to hear a frank assessment of reality, not an awe shucks sugar coated view of what's possible. I'd like to hear more owning up to mistakes and self recognition of responsibility.

I'd like to hear less motivational rhetoric and more stratigic plans. I'd like him to identify problems, talk straight about it, identify a plan, and then execute against that plan through his words and deeds.

I do not want my expectations falsely raised. "Ten wins...no excuses" or "national championship" and then subsequent back peddling. I liked the fire of the "Go play intramurals, brotha" but not the 16-33 record.

I do not want to hear about a QB competition that is neck and neck, only to have it be a rouse.

I do not want to hear about sky diving or running marathons. I want to hear about an offensive system and a team identity.

But that's just me.

He should have fired the whole staff and started over. He could of hired a bunch of top rated assistants with the budget CU has, the fact that he has 1 year at most to get it done, and the ability to offer 1 year contracts. This a**fu** could have hired Texas' DC and Alabama's OC!!!! I hate this guy!!!

oh by the way, if he wins 8 games in 2010 by some miracle, I reserve the right to say I knew it all along and knew that once he had upper-classmen at key positions like QB, WR, RB, and an O-Line, and an offensive coordinator, and........well, I reserve the right to say he did it the RIGHT way and I knew it all along.

In fact, if we win 8 games in 2010, people will be predicting MNC in 2011 as everyone will return. Then what?

We are going to be hurting when the kids who are going to be juniors next year are out of the program.

:yeahthat:
I'd just for once like to see Hawk take responsibility for his actions and give a plan for what he intends to do to fix it. Doesn't have to be detailed, just something in place for execution. I'm soooo tired of listening to the excuses.:blah:

Also, just checked the ESPN Austin website and they still don't have a link to the interview up yet. I'll keep checking through the day and post when it pops up.

This.

There was an article in SI yesterday about how thorough Mac Brown is. I am far too lazy to look up the exact quote, but he was asked what he would be thinking about when he couldn't sleep on Wednesday night. He replied with a laundry list of items, but one of the most interesting was his thoughts on his pregame speech (mind you, this is more than several days before he's going to have to give said speech). He said that he had to walk a fine line so that his players UNDERSTOOD that Alabama was a good team that could beat them (and therefore deserved every players respect), but also didn't have any reason to think that they could not and would not, with proper execution, win the game.

To me, comments like the examples that DrunkPanda gives belie what must be the undercurrent of Hawk's pregame and halftime speeches (which I have long suspected as being subpar); CU has no business hanging around with the Texases and Georgias of the world, but doesn't have to fear the Montana States or Toledos of the world either.

I have heard rumblings that Hawk has the tendency to cool off the team right before the game or the start of the second half with his feng shui zen crap, and I think that a good leader would recognize his deficiencies in this area and DELEGATE motivational speeches, even if it was under the guise of "Coach Hawk has some last minute points to go over with XYZ coach, so Coach Cabral will be giving the pregame speech today." I know Hawk wants to personally fix everything at CU, from the scuffs on the doors at Dal Ward to the 4-season-long dry spell of non-winning seasons, but at some point you would think that he would recognize that there are only 24 hours available to him in a day.

So he's used the "conflama" in the past? Wow. I found it comical when he used it on "The Experts" on ESPNU just a little while ago.
