Alec Burks

GAME #17 vs. 13/12 Kansas State Wildcats (14-2, 1-1 Big 12)

• Date: Saturday, Jan. 16 • Tipoff : 2:01 p.m. (MST)

• Television: Big 12 Network (Altitude 2 Sports & Entertainment)

• Announcers: Chad McKee (p-b-p), Rich Zvosec (analyst)

• Location: Coors Events Center (11,064)

• CU Radio: KKZN 760-AM: Mark Johnson (p-b-p), Charles Johnson (analyst); Sirius Channel 127

• Series vs. K-State: K-State leads 95-44 (in Boulder, 31-32; at Kansas State, 10-53; Neutral, 3-10). Big 12 Conference: Series tied 14-14 (CU leads 8-5 in Boulder in Big 12 Play).

QUICKLY: Alec Burks is the only true freshman in the country to score in double digits every game this season. Kennesaw State's Markeith Cummings has scored in double digits in every game, but is a redshirt freshman. Cody Ellis of Saint Louis has also scored in double digits in all his games, but has only played in two games • CU is starting the conference season against three nationally ranked opponents - a school-first • CU is 9-0 at home matching the 1982-83 season for consecutive wins at home to start a season. The last 10 in a row start was the 1979-80 season (first year of the Events Center) • CU has never defeated ranked opponents in back-to-back games • The last time CU had a winning record (over .500) to begin and end conference play was 2005-06 (9-7) • CU is shooting 51.9 percent from the field after two games.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES: Alec Burks' last five games lead CU in 18.0 ppg., 6.6 rpg., .788 FT%, four blocks - all team highs. His .508 FG% (30-of-59) is second to Marcus Relphorde's 52.1 percent (30-of-59) • Nate Tomlinson led the team with six assists at Texas, the eighth time he has led CU in assists this season, and fifth time with six or more. He leads the team with 66 assists. Last year, he had 52 assists after 15 games • In two Big 12 games, Relphorde leads the team w/ 20.5 ppg., 6.0 rpg., 5 treys and second in FG% (.560) • After two games, Alec Burks (18.5 ppg., 6.0 rpg.) and Cory Higgins (16.5 ppg.) rank second and third behind Relphorde in scoring.

AGAINST THE WILDCATS: Since Big 12 play began in 1997, the series is tied at 14 between Kansas State and Colorado. In Boulder, the Buffs hold an 8-5 edge, however the Wildcats have won the last three at the Events Center and the last seven in a row dating back to Feb. 18, 2006.

KANSAS STATE UPDATE: The Wildcats enters today's matinee as the No. 13 (AP)/No. 12 ESPN Coaches' Poll ranked team. Currently, K-State is 14-2 overall and 1-1 in Big 12 play having lost at Missouri (74-68) and defeating Texas A&M at home (88-65). The other loss occurred at Puerto Rico to Mississippi (86-74) back on Nov. 20. Four players in double figures and third year head coach Frank Martin (57-26, .663) returns four starters from last season's NIT team (second round).

****************

The Kansas State players to watch today are senior guard Denis Clemente (19.8 ppg) and senior center Luis Colon (14.9 ppg). Junior forward Curtis Kelly (11.1 ppg) has also shown some scoring ability. KSU is a very experienced team (starts 2 seniors and 3 juniors, 4 of which are returning starters). KSU was the #1 ranked team in the RPI at one point in the season with some big early wins. CU may actually have a height advantage today as the KSU starting guards are 6'0" and 6'1", the starting forwards are 6'5" and 6'8", and their center is listed at 6'10". As always, the keys for CU will be winning the turnover battle, shooting a high percentage and holding our own on the boards (rebounding from our guards is big).

Great opportunity today to get a national headline win, which would be CU's 2nd straight over ranked opponents and also keep the Buffs perfect at Coors this year.

Anyone know what channel this game is on Comcast-Denver? Altitude 2 is usually Channel 5 (CET), but I'm still showing high school basketball is on at the time. I see it is available on PPV though. Help!

34-38 at the half.

Great crowd. Got to be 9k or more.

This game is a ****ing street fight. Had to be over 30 fouls called in the 1st half.

Players from past decades were honored at half. Crowd went absolutely crazy for CB.

I've just about lost my voice already. It's ****ing nuts in here.

:gobuffs:

Down 6 with 4 1/2 minutes left.

Hard to believe they've kept it this close, being outscored from the line by 6 and outrebounded 36-20.

8 point KJSU lead now.... :sad1:

These refs suck

Sure seems like KState is getting away with a lot and we are getting called for some pretty ticky tack crap. I doubt that the Big XII wants its No 12 team getting knocked off by an unraned team.

we needed to score, get it to one-possession before the FT parade the final minute. but, same possession, Tomlinson gets blocked from behind and then Relphorde loses it off his hands on the baseline (when he's likely gonna score or go to the line).

20 offensive rebounds for kstate? Damn.

And 54 FT attempts? :wtf:

We were outrebounded 41-23. Also got outscored by 11 at the FT line, although KjSU did have 14 more attempts than us. I missed most of the game but those look like the 2 big differences right there.

Dufault, Harris-Tunks, Tomlinson, Knutson, Eckloff combined: 20 fouls, 7 points, 5 boards

we need more from these guys.

Offensive rebounds and missed free throws killed us. These refs shouldnt be allowed to work a high school game much less the Big 12. Im not one to bitch about that but no team should get 54 free throw attempts. On tv they said the attendance was 10,852 or something like that. I guarantee you those folks didnt come to see these guys call 65 fouls or whatever it was, new CEC record by the way. This isn't ****ing boys club, let the guys play. If this team could get some rebounding from somewhere, they could compete with just about anyone. Why the hell were Kansas St people doing the play by play on Altitude? I finally had to put it on mute but hated to because the crowd was great. Dont look now but it actually sounded like a big time college basketball arena today and not a half empty one , even on tv. Props to those who went to the game, especially those on this board. Kudos to the players too, played a nice game today, just didnt quite happen.

I may have missed this if it was brought up earlier this season or in past seasons - but I think one of the best things they've done is put the students behind one of the baskets.

was there. one hell of a surprising crowd. awesome. just imagine how much $ the AD would make if that was a regular occurrence. Never seen anything like it for basketball at CU. Great game despite the ****ing **** show from the refs. Proud of our guys, but its pretty apparent this team will never be consistent until it gets a big man. Kstate was clutch down the stretch, and we weren't. game.

Best student turnout I've seen for any game other than KU since the Chauncey days. And as loud as I've ever heard it in CEC at some points in the game.

Worst officiating crew I've ever seen in person ... especially the guy with the bad hair. Because of all the foul calls, mostly against us early, the first half seemed to go on forever. And it sure seemed like KjSU got away a lot with stuff our guys didn't.

But it IS a fun team to watch ... they play hard (if not always smart yet).

I believe that we would have still lost due to our inability to rebound, but being there in person, the refs were just terrible. The calls "over the back" calls were terrible and a lot of the offensive fouls were bad

That KSU team is at least a Sweet 16 squad this year and it wouldn't surprise me if they went a lot deeper in the tournament. Great guard play, a really good center, and a ton of front court athleticism & depth. Plus they're tough and play great defense. I was proud of our guys for matching their intensity and going toe-to-toe with them for 40 minutes.

We're close. And we've definitely got something building here. We need to get at least 1 out of 2 on the road next week to take the next step.

ksu had much better tats than we did, that's for sure.

I've got some questions on reffing. Does the Big XII have set teams of refs that are assigned to each game? Also, are these guys evaluated by the Big XII after each game? How are they evaluated? By some from filled out by the coaches or is there a Big XII rep at each game evaluating them? Finally, if they are deemed to have been less than good, how are they disciplined?

It seems like CU gets its share of horrible officiating. Is that the norm or the exception?

I watched it on TV.

1)I didn't think the refs were much worse than an average set of basketball officials. There were some questionable calls, but there always are. The Buffs are going to foul a lot due to their lack of an inside presence.

2)Great showing by the crowd. That was awesome to see. Buffs fans are itching for a winner. We deserve one.

3)What happened to the basketball band behind the basket? They used to be great back there.

4)Props to Chauncy.

5)If I'm a hs big man, I see a future for myself on this Buffs team.

6)Let's not let Bzzz get away. Build the ****ing practice facility or whatever he demanded in his contract.

i was very impressed with the students. i don't know if i agree with that about CB, however. we didn't turn out much during the Chauncey years more than about avg'ing about 7500 total. truth is, we didn't show up that much for Chauncey IMO. KU game is always the outlier, but the seemed the loudest on TV that i've seen in a long time. I'd put loudest i've seen in person beating KU and UT in 03, and some real nice crowds in the Moransais/Pelle/Harrions years and Bob Knight's first game in Boulder ( 10,000+ crowd)...and the win over OU in RP's second to last year/Roby's soph year.

not saying this is the case with you, but i remember going to a lot of game that Chauncey played in and buying a GA ticket and spreading out.

The most packed I've ever seen the CEC was the Roby/Harrison year around 2002-2003. We beat both UT and KU, and went to the tourney that season. CEC was rocking most nights, with overflowing student sections.

colorado fans always support good teams. College Bball is a blast. no reason (besides AD support/facilities) why CU shouldn't field a pretty decent BBall team. Hell its easier to keep up facility wise in bball then it is football, and it sure can make a school a ton of money. Keep coors full and the AD would be in much better shape.
