So who is going to give the recruiting luncheon summary?...

Rep to the best summary of the intrepid soul who not only attends, but lives to blog about it....:smile2:

Allright, you've had enough time to digest your rubber chicken...who went? And what interesting questions were asked?

Nothing on the local news about an all out brawl?

lol I would hope not, but I was hoping somebody would put his feet to the fire with a few pointed questions. But I wasn't interested enough to pay $50 to watch or do it myself...

Went to the luncheon with my son today.

Quick summary.
Very different feel today than the last few of these I have been to. Hawk has changed the majority of his tune. No rah, rah stuff. Talked about how great a place the University of Colorado is. Location, University and so forth. Did not mention any of the recruits individually. Mentioned how athletic the entire class is, covers a lot of depth across the board. Believes in what he is doing, believes in his staff.
Did say that 50% of there games have been decided by seven points or less and 20% of Big 12 games have also been decided by less than a touchdown. Instead of the 10 plays away from a good season he changed his tune to say it was actually 24 plays. I think he knows his ass is on the line and is taking the "all business aproach". He was very thankful of the fans. Mentioned this quite a few times.

A highlight package of each player was shown. Nothing new if you have seen the youtube highlights of each of the players. Players that stood out to me were Hirschman, this kid is going to be a player. Mobley, Duncan and Bell. Put me down for the running back for North Carolina as going to be the best of the bunch.

Bohn spoke for a few minutes about the new "Glory Colorado" fundraising plan. He said they will be breaking ground on the new basketball/volleyball practice facitlity the 1st of April. Talked about upgrading the the Flatirons Club and a few other things. Everyone can bag on the man but if nothing else he is very passionate about the Buffs.

Coach Mac gave another one of his great speeches. The man is simply amazing. He made a point to say that his record was worse after four years than Hawks. Told the story of the season they started our 0-4. He had a team meeting and set out six chairs in front of everyone. Sat the offensive line and tight end in the chairs and proceeded to tell the team that these six are going to lead this team to the promise land. They drew a line in the sand and they were going to punch every team right in the mouth. They were a running team and that they were going to get better as the game went on. He really likes Hawk and thinks there are a lot ol similarities between his teams and where Hawks team is right now. Did I say the man is amazing.

They did not take any questions for the audience.

On a side note. I sat at a table with a mother and her young son. He was probably eight years old. She took him out of school to be at the luncheon. She said he wouldn't miss it for the world. For all the negativity that is on this board it was refreshing to see a young man that wanted to be there to see "His team". Just see see "his coach" and "his players". His eyes were as big as saucers when he say Ryan Walters and Darian Hagan. It was refreshing to see the excitement in his eyes. He doesn't care who the coach is, who the AD is. He just wants to be a Colorado Buffalo.

Thanks jp! I hope Mac doesn't get ripped apart for being a "Hawk Lover",

Mac was great. I'm not a religious guy, but it was inspiring to hear someone who is talk about being on his knees praying after starting his fourth season 0-4 to run his CU record to 14-34. He talked about how the passage from Job came to him: "Stand up like a man." Then from that point forward (after the speech about the 6 guys mentioned earlier), his teams won 79% of their games.

By the time he was done talking, I was ready to take the field for CU and kick some Husker butt.

Thanks for the summaries guys.

Sometimes I wonder if Hawkins understands PR at all. There is no reason to bring up how many games have been close. There is no reason to re-visit "_ number of plays away from a bowl game". Even in a room full of diehard fans, it does nothing to further his cause.

Thata great! However, how did you feel after hawk was done talking? :sad1:

I really hope Mac is right, the guy sounds like a heck of a leader. He was a little before my time, but I really hope we can find one like him sooner rather than later.

What else did you expect from Mac - like he's going to rag on Hawkins?

2 programs going in opposite directions.

Hawk's not a PR guy. One of the big disconnects he has is that he doesn't speak in sound bytes. A lot of times, if you parse out what he's saying and take it out of context... it sounds like an excuse or weird or disconnected or whatever. But in context, he's usually making a very valid point.

He spoke today about how CU football has been playing a lot of close games. (That's true.) He then said that in close games, a few plays may be the difference between a win or a loss. (That's also true.)

He took those 2 true statements as the basis for his offseason motivational theme with his staff and his players. He put together a reel of 24 key plays that could have made for a completely different season if CU had executed them properly. He showed it to his staff and his players. And now the message he keeps repeating to everyone when he sees them is: what have you done to get 3 plays better today? Be it working out, watching film, etc.

Now, that may not read well on a message board or in the press, but it makes a lot of sense from the standpoint of what you tell your team if you are Hawk. You build their confidence by stressing how close they are and getting them to focus on improving. Trying to get each individual to be driven to improve so that he can help the team get over the hump next year.

Also, he talked some about how he has taken the Coach Mac philosophy to heart by asking 3 very important questions: Where are we? Where do we want to get? How are we going to get there? He said he had a frank discussion with his staff laying that out.

Next, he went into the basic recruiting pitch he uses to sell CU. He said that when you look at the factors of a great place to live, a great educational opportunity and a tradition of football excellence... that he believes CU is 2nd to none. Added to that, he talked about how important it is to be genuine and how all of his coaches are good men that parents and recruits trust because it's honest when they talk about caring that the prospect not only develops as a football player, but also gets his degree while developing as a man.

Finally, it was obvious that the number of off sides and delay of game penalties last season really pissed him off. He must have said 3 times (once when it didn't fit and was an off-the-cuff remark) how guys need to know the snap count, calls need to be made correctly and in the right order, and people need to fire off the ball on time (not early or late).

************

All in all, I thought it was a very grounded and good speech by Hawk. He expressed confidence, humility and appreciation. Nothing earth shattering and he repeated a few of his favorite Hawkisms ("little things", "keep pounding and all of a sudden the concrete cracks", etc.). But I can honestly say I came away from his speech feeling better about him and the state of the program than I did before he spoke.

I will feel better when it shows itself on the field. We've heard this same routine for 4 years now. There has to be some urgency to winning now. Sounds like the rah-rah stuff is gone but the state of the program hasn't changed after one speech. Anyway, hopefully everyone is ready for spring other than bonsu being out and everyone is ready for game 1. Need a fast start.

Thanks for that explanation Nik. A nice break from the program until Spring ball will do me some good.

Thanks for giving us a thorough explanation Nik. When you give his little isms some context it really does sound a lot better. Like Syko said, it needs to show on the field, but it certainly sounds like he has a plan. I'm still having a lot of trouble seeing a good season forthcoming, but I really hope he does pull a Mac and proves me and many others wrong.

Here is my issue...what is Hawkins doing to get the plays in from the side lines in a timely fashion. This has been an issue since his first year. I have seen this team take a delay of game after a time out. How many Time Outs have been wasted because the play does not get in or we take a 5 yard lost. Yes the players have to quit making stupid mistakes but the Hawkins has to be sure the coaches fix theirs. After 4 years lets hope we see the plays get in quicker.

I don't disagree. We were a sloppy, disorganized team. It was inexcusable.

With almost all the starters returning on offense, Kiesau no longer being a rookie OC, and Hawkins making it a point of emphasis... one would hope we improve by a wide margin.

And hope is all that's keeping me going as a Buffs fan these days, because there certainly isn't a track record or trend that indicates I can count on improvement.

Where did you hear this news on Bonsu? I could have missed some things but I don't remember there being a mention of which players were out. I'm not trying to challenge you I'm just curious.

NM I just found Ringo's blog post

So when Mac's team struggled he had a meeting and told everyone that they were going to be tough and punch the other team right in the mouth running the ball.

Hawk says we need to work on the little things. Don't get to low, high, nice and steady, bring the lunch pail.

No wonder one coach is best in the history of CU and one is worst.

I understand the hope thing...I believe that Hawkins is throwing out things that he thinks people may want to hear. Who knows.

I'm so sick of his bull**** spin on that one. He's the king of scoring garbage time points, making the game appear closer than it really was. And 2 of the 3 wins last year were by 4 points or less.

They were 2 plays away from being 1-10. I hope he knows that as well.

Well, BnG, I've been told that Hawkins' intensity level is sky high. He, apparently, ripped into a kid for screwing up "a little thing." I also hear the players are loving it (the intensity) and are fully behind Hawkins. FWIW.

He ripped a kid for missing a "little thing". WTF? I'm sorry, but I have a hard time believing that this goof has suddenly found the intensity button and is pushing it. Hawkins is what he is - a sh!tty football coach. We're stuck with him for another season. I plan on being absolutely obliterated before I go to the games this year. Liquid anesthetic is the best form of pain killer.

My impressions --

food was better than usual
Mac's speech was AWESOME
Bohn sat at my table so that was cool
they gave out free tickets to the upcoming men's & women's b-ball games so now I have a nice group going up Saturday!

Reps to Buffnik & JP!

Glad to hear that Hawkins didn't say the same old stuff over & over. If he was a little more humbled, then great! Maybe he's finally getting it that the fans & alum were tired of how he makes all of his presentations to the public. As it's been pointed out by others, "including myself" how there have been Way to many delay of game & off sides penilties hopefully also addresses the need for better disipline. I never really ever heard Hawkins say that was a problem before, but now it bother's him? He needs to show that tape he made over & over again to the staff and the players until they get it right! So was attendance up, down or about the same? My guess is that it was down.

I was kidding when I typed in "little thing." But, no, that is what I've been told. Hawkins is very intense, as you could imagine, and very determined to instill discipline and eliminate mistakes. Don't shoot me, I'm just passing along what I've been told from someone close to the situation.

Attendance was way down, Hugegroove. I think there were about 1,500 people a couple years ago for the Darrell Scott class. Maybe 500 this year.
