Instead it was CU's 11th loss this season. A heartbreaker, given the circumstances, yet a definite sign the men's basketball program may actually be on the mend. No one, however, was willing to take anything other than a real win.
"We're not into moral victories," Bzdelik said. "We have to learn how to close out games. It's about winning."

This team is so close. All these close games against good opponents... it is painful

Seriously...Coach BZ is AWESOME and I hope we do everything in our power to let him stay for a LONG while! I love going down to the Buff Club before the games and listening to the guy talk. He will tell you exactly what is up, what to expect and is dead on. He'll tell you flat out that this team is a solid big man away from making some noise, and he'll also tell you exactly where they need to improve and how to get it done. There is no smoke & mirrors, or excuses or any other crap like what is spewed from DH's mouth. It's simply, this is what needs to happen, this is what I'm going to do to make it happen, and if not then I take full responsibility for not getting it done.

The reason I like Coach Bzz is that I actually feel confident seeing him on the sideline, Hawk not so much.

It's refreshing to get that kind of honesty from the head coach. I'm certain we won't hear "we were 10 layups away from making the tournament, we really were" from coach Bzdelik. It's clear that what he's doing is working, and that he'll have this thing turned around with one or two more players. That's good. We need it. Our football team won't be making any noise for a while.

god. too bad cory just didn't have a good game. However, awesome. It was nice to see a lot of the guys step up

I really like him, but I say that we need to see what he does once he gets a big man in place. If he can't ever find the piece he need, how long do we give him. We have 5 guys on the team right now that can't play the role and Bz recruited at least 3 of them if I remember correctly. I think he is looking for a Dirk type player and those are very, very rare and he needs to switch up the offense if he continues to lose game due to poor rebounding and interior defense. I am willing to give him to the end of his contract, but I definitely wouldn't extend him this year.

Coach B is a standup guy. Love that in the leader of the program.

From a basketball standpoint, I really hope everyone appreciates how good he is. As a game planning strategist and from an Xs & Os standpoint, he is legitimately an elite basketball coach who is nationally respected by those in basketball circles. His player development has also been outstanding. Recruiting was my biggest complaint about him, but it's hard to argue with the newcomers we got this year.

Allow this team to grow up a bit, bring in a good class next year... and we'll win in '10-'11.

Get the team the facility upgrades it needs, get Coach B signed long term... and I have no doubt that Coach B will deliver us a big time basketball program.

the students are ready for it.Very proud of the turnout on the student side last night. Disgusted with everyone else. So many season ticket holders on the south side sold their tickets to Kansas fans. The support is there, all bzz needs to do is win.

The students really showed up for that one. Overflowed the sections and were loud the entire game. A lot of empty seats on the South side like Snowy mentioned, but it was awesome to see how many students showed. It was the best student showing I've ever seen and I've been going to games since the early to mid 90s.

Are you sure that season ticket holders sold them to KU fans? I kinda doubt that. I'm guessing those seats occupied by KU fans last night are normally unoccupied. We don't have that many season ticket holders. KU fans snatch up whatever they can grab. There were some stories about KU fans buying season tickets to CU just to get into this one game. They're rabid fans, and CU looks forward to the money from that game every year. It's the only game all season they can count on a near-sellout.

Perhaps the CU ticket office should do a better job marketing those empty seats to football fans who don't go to BB games. For once in my life I'd like to see that game be nearly all black & gold instead of 40-50% gayhawk blue.

PS, my complaint with my fellow season ticket holders is different: They're boring and sit on their hands the whole game. It feels like popcorn night at the retirement center down there. I'm not even sure half of them can stand up even if they felt moved to do so.

Sorry, not trying to pick on old folks. But it's a live basketball game, people! Overtime! Get off your asses!

the north side started standing up in the 2d half. it was a sick environment.

It was a sold out game, I don't know how there were significant empty seats on the south side....

Right - sold out because KU fans called up the CU ticket office and were stunned to find primo seats that should be occupied by season ticket holders but are not.

My point is, this happens every single year. Maybe the CU ticket office could help matters by marketing the game, trying to fill this game up with CU fans instead of waiting for the inevitable blue horde.

Wait - I used "marketing" and "CU ticket office" in the same sentence. My bad.

Don't think they could market it any better....I received 2 separate emails alerting me to purchase tix for this game, and got a recorded phone call from CJ

What do you expect the CU Ticket Office to do? We only have about 1000 season ticket holders. CU would not allow single game tickets to be purchased for KU unless you purchased season tickets. Then CU sold 2 season tickets for $90. Then they did mini packs that included the KU game. Then just last week they put single game tickets on sale. Short of giving away tickets, what should they have done knowing there was a mob of KU fans that would pay full boat.

....have been marketing the heck out of the program and that game....at least they jacked the prices up for the game to make some $$ of those KU fans

So you're a football season ticket holder and they hit you up like that? Well then, my apologies. I hope they hit up all 25,000 (or so) FB fans that don't hold season tickets to BB. If they did that for you, I hope they did that for all of them.

I'm basing my comments on about a decade where the Athletic Department did very little to support the basketball team under Patton. That started happening before Bohn got here obviously, and I guess once he got his guy in there he's motivated to promote the product now. But the 1-2 years those two guys worked together, I didn't see Bohn bend over backwards to sell the product.

If they're indeed doing what you describe then they're finally putting forth good effort to cross-market. That's good - better than good.

By the way - the place was nearly full of CU fans for the KSU game. They are out there. I understand that KU fans are willing to pay top dollar, but it SUCKS for us longtime ticket holders to have to endure half a house of KU fans. We need to find a way to fill the CEC with CU fans when we play KU. There are people employed full time with that task, so now that the BB team seems to be turning things around, let's figure it out for next year.

That's all I'm saying. It sucks and I'm sick of it.

From what I could see on TV, it looked like there were a few gayhawk fans in attendance, but nothing close to the 40% you're claiming. More like a smattering throughout the arena. Maybe 10%. That's just from what I could see on TV.

That's the thing, you don't see the whole crowd on TV. I'd say they had around 30-40%. Our student section was just flat awesome.

The great thing last night was when KU fans did start getting vocal, CU fans just got louder.

Interesting. It sure didn't look that way on TV. Don't get me wrong, you could tell there were some gayhawks there, but when they would show a shot of the crowd, the blue was speckled in amongst a ton of black and gold. It definitely had the look of a strong home crowd. Props to the ESPN folks, I guess, for crafting the shots accordingly.

I should add one other thing - I'm a football season ticket holder and I didn't get any calls. I did get a flyer during the football season to try to get me to purchase basketball tickets, though.

you should seriously consider buying tix next year man. its a blast and the team is well coached and dangerous to anyone they play. Such a change from patton.

They had their huge section above the locker rooms as always and had some pretty big groupings in a couple other areas. And I second what Snowbuff said, you really should at least consider it. Games are fun and the team plays with great intensity, it is a great time.

I don't like basketball. I hope they do well, but watching basketball is kind of like watching soccer as far as I'm concerned.

I bought single game FB tix to Wyoming and aTm. I got the same e-mails Rrrralph did. I think they're mining the FB fan base...

So your participation in the basketball forum is more about just wanting CU to achieve something in an important revenue sport (even if you won't be that into it)?

Pretty much, yeah. I want CU to succeed at everything. I think Bzdelik is doing a decent job, although he hasn't won anything yet. I feel a lot better about the direction the basketball program is going than I do about the direction the football program is going.

BTW, basketball tickets are CHEAP when you buy season tix. I sit in the bench section, just above the seat backs, just off center court. $85 per seat for the season, plus like a $5 service charge per seat. On a season basis it's under $6 / game. For just Big 12, that's a little over $10 / game.

That's like depression-era numbers. Something tells me that'll change, but as much as I bitch about the ticket office, they do make it affordable.

If I knew for sure there would be somebody who would use them, I might buy a set of season tickets and give them away. I don't want to be bothered with trying to find somebody to use the tickets, though.
