Hawkins pulls Sumler's scholarship.

Hawkins opted not to honor Sumler's scholarship for the spring semester and Sumler has appealed that decision. Athletic director Mike Bohn said he was scheduled to meet with Sumler about the issue last week.

I know this was in the Scott thread but I thought this action by our head coach deserved its own topic so more people see it. To me, this is a very petty thing to do for a kid that played hard for the program and by all accounts was a team player.

Two things really bother me about this:

1, this guy is graduating early and from what Hawkins and his bosses have been talking about, this is what our program is all about now. Not winning, but having good kids that graduate. And now they are pulling the rug out from under him for this spring semester even though he played ball last fall.

2, (and probably more importantly if we are unlucky enough to have Hawkins lead us through another recruiting cycle) this is going to create a huge recruiting problem when other coaches point out that Hawkins has pulled a scholarship.

I know what the reasoning was, but it is kind of an unwritten rule that you don't retract a scholarship, especially from a kid that is going to graduate in the spring.

Maybe this jackass has finally seen what he was hired to do, win football games. I dont agree with what he did with Sumler but I wont lose any sleep over it.

dont understand why talkins would do such a thing to a team player like sumler....it's not like he got to see the field much just on 3rd and 15 to block for that 3yd curl....i hate our socalled coach.

This is really a dumb move and very petty on Talkins part but its a not a surprise. Losers do petty things and Dan Hawkins IS NOTHING BUT A LOSER..

I sure like to hear buffaholic, the Woelk's, and any of the other pro-Hawkers defend this move and tell us that Hawk does it the right way..

Its sickening that people still buy the crap that comes out of his mouth.. So looking forward to after this year that CU and Talkins part ways..

As I replied elsewhere, I agree it is petty. Everyone was upset that Josh smith waited until after spring ball to leave the program because it messed up recruiting and player development. Now maybe you can see why someone would wait.

I don't like that Sumler has decided to leave but Hawkins could take the high road instead of trying to screw over the kid. If getting kids to graduate is so important (and yes I believe it is) then the coach should be assisting in that.

OK, I said it in the other thread and I'll say it again. You guys are so blinded by emotion toward Hawkins that you will rip Hawkins for just about anything. Until you know, if you ever do, the exact facts of this case, maybe you should be a little more careful in venting.

I mentioned a couple of possible scenarios in the other thread: That Sumler told Hawkins he would be back then reneged; that Hawkins wanted to give the remainder of the scholarship to a non-scholarship player as a reward. I just thought of another as well. I think CU is in danger of losing a couple of scholarships because of the NCAA projected graduation factor, whatever it is called. Maybe he would be using Sumler's half scholarship to account for the projected loss of one or two scholarships.

The point is, there are likeley many things that could have weighed in on the decision of which we are just not privy to.

It doesn't matter what the circumstances are. The yanking of a scholly in this situation is flat out petty, and does nothing except make the program look even worse. The decision may have all the good reasoning in the world behind it, yet still be wrong.

And you will support anything he does, including yanking a scholarship from a kid who, by all outward appearances, is the epitome of what Hawkins claims to want in Boulder. He stays out of trouble and he's graduating on time.

You do the exact same thing, DBT, just on the other side. Don't pretend you're different. You've dug in your heels just as deeply as anyone else.

DBT, you may be right about there being something else going on, but in traditional Boulder/Pravda style, the buttercup brigade remains silent and takes it on the chin. Others have suggested a PR rep would do wonders, and it amazes me CU, even after the scandal that wasn't, hasn't figured that out.

The idea of spreading the scholly around has merit, except that one semester of scholly really doesn't mean much, except when it reflects as poorly on the "student-athlete" fiction the AD is clinging to right now since they can't get it done on the field.

I admittedly do not like the guy, but when he does something positive for this program, I will gladly give him some credit. Since the disaster that was the 2009 season ended, all that has happened is we signed the last ranked recruiting class in the Big 12 and we are still waiting on an assistant coach to be hired. I am beyond mad, mostly just funny to me now, this program is just in bad shape right now and each week something new comes out. When can I get some good news for a change?

It would set a very bad precedent if Sumler were to get paid after voluntarily quitting the team.
College football is a business, not a charity, and Demetrius just learned a valuable lesson about hanging around until after the bonus checks are cut.

AD Plant?

Bush league and petty move IMO.

I hear what you are saying, but how often is a kid going to RS ,finish his degree in four years and decide to transfer? Once every four or five years? I can only think of a couple of situations where this has happened anywhere, and never before at CU. Since the adminitards are salivating over team GPA instead of wins, you'd think they'd be wetting themselves over another athlete getting his degree and not be jerking the carpet out form under him.

What don't you get? He should have quit in May with his degree in hand and we would not be having this discussion.
It's not about the administration, or the coach, or AD, it's about a kid quitting before he got his degree and assuming he would get paid.
How many people quit their job and get paid for 6 months for sitting on their ass?

So the message to the next kid is to not tell anyone they are leaving until the day before they're out of there. Gotcha.

Please. He gave 4 years worth of football, he should get his 4 years worth of scholarship. They are year to year aren't they?

He's hardly sitting on his ass as you insinuate. He's graduating in 4 years, which is a huge accomplishment for a STUDENT athlete.

I think it's a bush league move. You don't.

You keep accusing me of that. It just is flat out not true that I support anything he does. I'm trying to remain neutral. To you guys, it is like Revelations 3:16 says: "So, because you are lukewarm--neither hot nor cold--I am about to spit you out of my mouth",. In other words, one either hates everything Hawkins does or says or you love him.

I am trying to back off heavy criticism, but Hawkins really needs to give the fans something positive to be excited about. As far as I can tell, we have yet to see anything positive coming out of the football program for a while.

Agreed. As Slade says, plenty of kids have left the team for all kinds of reasons and had their schollies pulled. I'll agree we don't know all the details, but this sure smells like a punitive move from a coach who absolutely can not tolerate being crossed by anybody...

I can think of quite a few kids who gave up football, either voluntarily or involuntarily - and CU honored their scholarship.

which would lead me to believe something else is going on here, do we know what our overall scholly situation is? we just Put Celestine, Richter, Baktahri, and Hirschman on scholarship is it possible meat's scholly went to one of them?

He didnt say anything about whether is was bush league or not he said DS jsut learned a life lesson, when you work a gig you stay until the check is in hand. You see it all the time in the work force a rash of people quit right after bonus season, DS just found out why.

OK, how many of thos kids that you talk about had a full year of eligibility remaining and just left the team with the intent of playing for another team? I think the kids you are talking about almost always quit for either medical or family emergency reasons.

Not to pick on kids, but I have a hard time believing Sumler doesn't deserve to have his scholarship honored when guys like Fataagi and Tau did.

I have to believe there is more to this story, but I just can't imagine what set of facts would justify this move.

I just don't see any upside for Hawk or the program with a move like this. Hawk looks like a doosh (no matter the circumstances) and what is the upside? Giving a walk-on a scholly for one semester? Is that really worth the bad pub?
