Will BYU end up screwing us?

the Gov. of Utah stated today that he would not allow utah to join the pac without byu tagging along. I assume that one can not be elected gov. of utah if they didn't attend byu. it makes sense that the mormon hierarchy would not want utah to join a more prestigious conference while they got left behind, although i'm sure they would have no problem with just byu joining. seeing as utah and cu are the only really viable options for the pac-10 would they just stay at 10 teams if they couldn't get utah?

I believe the Pac would sooner take CU and New Mexico if it came to that.

I suspect, although I have no way of knowing for sure, that if Utah was unable to go that the Pac 10 would add UNLV instead.

no CU is the one the Pac 10 wants.....if utah couldn't go than I am sure the Pac could come up with someone else. BYU is not an option for pac 10 as the no play sunday and they just not a fit.

how can a gov. block a schools move anyways?

BYU isn't like some junior colllege.. It has a very good academic reputation as well along with a very good athletic program.. The governor is looking out for both schools in his state which is smart thing for him to do..

I don't know if the Pac 10 will go with 2 schools from the same state as their expansion plan.. Its possible they could add 4 teams as well and their options will open up if if if Texas leaves for the Big Ten..

CU and Air Force or CSU might be more desirable as a combo as the Denver market is much more desirable than SLC and the Pac 10 literally has zero interest in BYU. I wouldn't mind having CSU tag along and despite their pathetic support as of late, their stadium is only 3k smaller than Wazzu's.

Their governor is really going to **** over Utah unless they are able to get into the Big 12 somehow.

BYU doesn't have the research acumen of the big state schools, and just won't fit. The schools could still play each other (ala CU CSU) out of conference. The governor is being an idiot or just making a soundbyte. No way BYU goes to the Pac, and all he would be doing is ****ing over the school. Great job moron.

I see no way that the PAC 10 takes BYU. They don't even want to think about the mess that scheduling around BYU's no Sunday games rule would cause. The PAC 10 does a lot of basketball games on Sundays, this is a big part of their sales pitch for their new TV contracts which is a big part of why they would consider expansion in the first place. It would also create havoc in scheduling other sports since most of the PAC 10 schools have a large number of sports and many are sharing facilities with other sports and even a significant number of other events.

It would also defeat a main purpose in expansion of the league which is to expand the TV footprint. The appeal of CU is the #16 TV market in the country in Denver plus the rest of the front range. Going Utah/BYU would only bring in Salt Lake and the Utah/Northern Arizona/Southern Idaho mormon enclave which is in total much smaller than the Denver market alone. Taking one of the two schools makes a lot of sense since it is a growing market with good demographics but taking both is a loser from a financial standpoint.

I can see the Governor trying to make this play to get both schools in a major conference but I can also see it costing both schools the opportunity, if it came down to Utah not getting anything because of this the Gov would end up dealing with a lot of seriously pissed off Ute fans. In the end he has to decide between standing up for BYU or the chance to get one school in a position to make a lot more money and get significantly more publicity for the state.

If he stands his ground I could still see the PAC 10 taking CU and going after someone else. Utah would be already be their #2 target after CU, the speculation would move to who is #3. New Mexico has been down recently but is comparable to Utah in market size and market growth. They could even potentially go to Texas for another Big XII school or settle for UNLV.

no CU is the one the Pac 10 wants.....

This seems to be the case. We were mentioned in the early 90's, and again this time. That's 2 times the pacten expansion has been rumored, and both times CU is in the "mix".

how can a gov. block a schools move anyways?

If it's a state school, vice private..... However, someone else pointed out that he's trying to take care of the 2 major univ's in the state, and gain some extra voters for future reelection plans.

Go research how Baylor got into the Big XII

People say that TCU got screwed but it wasn't like TCU was any good during that time.. Baylor was a legit program in the 80's and early 90's. Houston would have probably been the fourth team of the SWC but they were on probation at the time..

The Big 12 got 4 of the best programs from the SWC regardless of who was friends with who in the Texas legislature and Ann Richards...

Well we know the castro's position on BYU joining the pac10:

I really question a governor stepping in when it's not a state university. But in the real world, all a politician cares about is opinion polls, votes, power and money. In the state of Utah, that generally means supporting the "Y" even if it ****s the "U".

Is UNLV a good enough school for the Pac 10 to consider? What about UNM? Nevada maybe?

Within the Pac Ten "footprint" (Pacific and Mountain Time Zones) the following schools are ranked by research:

Research/Very High and AAU member (Stanford, Cal, USC, UCLA, Washington, and Arizona rank here)
Colorado

Research/Very High (Arizona State, Oregon State, and Washington State rank here)
Utah
Colorado State
New Mexico
Hawaii
Montana State

Research/High (Oregon is in this category, despite being an AAU member)
BYU
UNLV
Wyoming
San Diego State
Texas Tech
Nevada
Utah State
UTEP
New Mexico State
Idaho
Montana

Doctoral Research
TCU

Masters (Large University)
Boise State
Fresno State
San Jose State

Athletically, I think the Pac Ten isn't solely motivated by football, and probably look fairly well upon UNLV and UNM basketball. The difference between the two universities is that UNM is sinking a lot of $$$ into their athletic facilities ($60 million renovation of The Pit, and 42,000 capacity for the football stadium) over the last few years. While Albuquerque isn't Las Vegas, the higher academic research standing, generally considered higher academic programs, better facilities (UNLV's last AD complained bitterly about this), and much greater community support the Lobos should easily get the nod over UNLV for any conference expansions (and could have leverage with both Pac Ten and Big 12 footprints bordering their state). There is some historical rivalry with Arizona as well, as both states were carved out of the same territory after the Mexican War.

I can't see the Pac Ten dropping their academic standards to allow BYU. BYU is a GREAT under-graduate school for certain degrees, but the academic freedom issue and lack of high research activity are deal-killers to me.

New Mexico should be in the Big 12 instead of Baylor.. Too many Texas teams and honestly Texas Tech is lucky they were allowed in with A$M and Texas since they aren't an equal of those two.

I will have to look around and see exactly why Tech and Baylor were both included in the Big 12. I kind of know the Baylor story but not as much on Tech. For some reason thinking about it now, I thought Texas and A$M were what the Big 8 wanted at first and not a merger of 4 SWC teams, but I could be wrong..

It's all the same story.

It was time, as one state politician with a vested interest in the matter later recalled, "to turn loose the dogs of war."
The pack included Dobermans, a veritable who's who of Baylor and Texas Tech alumni. Ann Richards, then governor, and Bob Bullock, then lieutenant governor, were Baylor grads. Sibley held a high-ranking position on the powerful Senate Finance Committee.
Tech unleashed its own influential alums: John Montford, president pro tempore of the Senate; Robert Junell, destined to become chairman of the House Appropriations Committee; and Speaker of the House Pete Laney.
Sibley threatened a cut in funding for UT and A&M if they bolted on their own. Junell collared UT president Robert Berdahl and spelled out what was at stake.
"As I recall, it wasn't a very veiled threat to cut budgets if Tech was left behind," Berdahl recalls.

Power brokers: How tagalong Baylor, Tech crashed the revolt

That link does a great job talking about how the Big Eight went from 8 to 10 to 12 within a week.

And I think the Pac-10 is finally waking up and realizing it needs more TV sets to pump up the money. And I think they realize that CU is the big name they need to get, with Utah being the 12th team and UNM as an understudy. Why UNM? Very good hoops, money pumping into the program and an area which is growing and could be really big in 25 years. People probably laughed at the Pac-8 when they added Arizona State and little remote Arizona. But look at them now.

Wouldn't be the first time ****'s been made up. Welcome to the board!

I couldn't find any obvious links to the OP.

This article from Dick Harmon of Deseret News has some interesting thoughts though:

Pac-10 expansion could turn political

It is not a given that the Big 12 would give up Missouri and St. Louis' No. 21 TV market to the Big Ten without a fight. Why would the Big 12 give up Colorado and Denver's No. 16 television market to the Pac-10? Why would the Buffs — who have already said no before — go to the Pac-10, which hasn't put two teams in a BCS bowl since 2002?

"A well-placed source on the college landscape says that a bit before Scott came to the Pac-10, the league had an analysis done of expansion possibilities and concluded that a Colorado-Utah addition didn't really do all that much. And that, realistically, nothing short of Texas would."

Dick Harmon is a shill and he writes for the Desnews which is the mormon paper. The BYU world is crumbling and they are grasping at straws.

20 years ago sure, maybe even 10 years ago. Things have changed here alot in the last 10 years. He is not even an elected gov and if he aspires to keep his job or be elected in the future, he will stay out of the whole thing.

Great link!

There is no way the Pac-10 skips to a Utah/BYU combo without at least giving CU first shot to decide. Why? The Denver TV market. The Pac-10 isn't doing this for fun, they are doing it for TV money. Going to 12 teams might give them a conference championship game, but if all they add in the way of TV markets is SLC, that's not the plan. They want Denver and SLC. Failing that, Denver and New Mexico might be plan B. UNLV would be awesome, but it's already a Pac-10 market and academically falls short of Utah and UNM...

All I can say is, thank God Montana State doesn't carry a big TV market with them....
