Comprehensive list of reasons for/against Pac 10 move

Let's make a list. Feel free to help add, especially with the cons as I personally see very little downside to the move.

Pros:

1. California is our main recruiting base and playing multiple California schools on a yearly basis would be a big boost for recruiting.

2. We have far more alumni/fans in Pac 10 areas than in Big 12 areas. Playing in front of them on an annual basis means more money for the university, both in terms of donations and merchandise sold.

3. Potential for better TV contract/revenue sharing, including the money from a new Pac 12 network.

4. Better cities for away trips. Going to away games increases affinity for the program and creates a greater level of attachment amongst CU alumni.

5. Fresh start. A move, along with a new coach, would inject some much needed enthusiasm to the program.

6. Increased academic reputation. Being associated with Cal, UCLA, Stanford, USC and UW is a huge step up from the top 5 schools in the B12 (Texas, ATM, ?????).

7. Possible increased support from faculty/admin. Similar to the increased academic rep, the faculty/admin would prefer to be associated with Pac 10 schools rather than Big 12 schools. In addition, they would see that the top academic schools in the Pac 10 understand the importance of athletics to universities.

8. More level playing field in terms of revenue and facilities. Oregon and UCLA have better facilities than us and that's probably it.

9. If Utah was part of the move, it would renew an old rivalry that would likely quickly develop again.

10. More level playing field for admissions. No KjSUs in the Pac.

11. Prevents getting stuck in the cold if Texas and others bolt for the Big11Ten (or even SEC).

12. No more Texas-centric BS.

13. Probably forces AD to bring back baseball or other sports.

Cons:

1. Loss of Nebraska rivalry (unless they were willing to schedule and the other long time Big 8 games.

2. Possible loss in conference prestige. The Big 12 has far more NCs in the last 20-30 years than the Pac 10. In terms of history, only USC would have a better one in the Pac 10 with Washington on a similar level.

3. Possibly opens the door for CSU to replace us in the B12. Not likely, but a CSU team in a BCS conference may hurt in-state recruiting.

4. Hurts our recruiting in Texas and other B12 states.

Unknowns:

1. Willingness/ability of Pac 10 to cover our B12 buyout.
2. Impact on travel costs? (likely negligble)

Pros:
14. Increased international exposure. I read somewhere that Pac Ten schools like UCLA, Stanford and Washington have 70+ merchandisers of their official products in China alone. With the global economic changes, tapping into a lucrative Southeast Asian market for students would bring increased tuition (and research) for the university.

15. Access to the Rose Bowl.

16. In-state recruits would more likely stay at home, as we seem to lose more to Pac Ten schools than Big 12 schools.

17. California schools are under heavy financial pressure, creating less opportunity in the medium term for them to "dominate" the conference with facility upgrades, etc.

18. We could piss in the Colorado River knowing it will end up in the drinking water of all of our rivals from Utah to Arizona and California.

Cons:
5. Overall Bowl picture is currently inferior to the Big 12. (Fiesta, Cotton, Alamo, Holiday vs Rose, Alamo, Holiday, Sun)

6. More level playing field in recruiting due to other schools' locations and academic ratings being comparable, thus less "advantage" for CU as compared to in the Big 12.

7. California-centric conference from a political standpoint, and CU without any traditional "allies".

8. This would effectively end the "Mick Ronson Mountain Conference" talks.

Unknowns:
3. Big 12 currently uses a 50/50 equal/performance sharing distribution for TV revenues. The Pac Ten does something similar, but not sure exactly how. Even in an increase TV contract by Pac Ten it would be important to push for an equal sharing regardless.

4. Divisional format of new 12 Pac could create various strengths/weaknesses depending upon the alignment.

Pros:

USC song girls in Boulder every couple years.

Cons:

Dbag Nebraska fans to be replaced by equally dbaggy Oregon fans.

Pro:

I would much see CU with leverage in negotiations of a new 12Pac TV contract , than going into the next Big12 TV contract with an underperforming AD and Texas looking to get paid.

8. This would effectively end the "Mick Ronson Mountain Conference" talks.

nice. :smile2: though we might have to go with the MRMC (TM). the MRMC is kinda pie in the sky, i admit....though if a playoff system were ever implemented i think regional organization to produce brackets and seeding could end up looking a lot like the MRMC.

actually, in the past i've been against the move every off-season when it's floated as a hypothetical having grown with the Big 8. given the current set of affairs, with the program's skid over the last 4-5 years, recruiting in TX seemingly more formidable now than ever (though when the XII formed i would have bet the opposite), the WC alumni base factor given that money is an issue both for the AD and CU in general in today's economy....i think i'm off the fence and in favor. if only because i like the idea of a proactive move rather than waiting to see how things shake out in a situation in the XII in which our input/interests are not well represented. the proverbial: left out in the cold situation.

i'm for the move.

I don't see how ditching the so-called 'rivalry' game with the nubs is a con.
Nebraska is allready the skanky meat in the middle of a Kansas - South Dakota three-way. Stop that series and there is one less reason to waste time thinking about that part of the country.

I think we could develop a pretty healthy rivalry with UW and Oregon if we were in a northern division. With UW you have a very similar program with similar history (**** lately, BCS bowl beginning of the decade, national champs in early 90s, ****ed over by Captain Sweatervest, almost identical all time wins). And of course we go head to head with Oregon in recruiting and their fans are complete douchebags.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe most pac 10 schools allow for a handul of special admittances for the football program.

Think it depends on the program. Stanford, UW and UCLA have similar or higher standards than us while Cal (and likely others) does special admits.

at Cal, something like 6% of an entering freshman class can be admitted on a "special talent" basis. originally designed to accommodate musicians, writers, non-traditional students, or whatever it's also used for athletes.

i remember last off-season Rick N. complaining about some kids Cal was able to admit that UCLA would not given that technically both schools were part of the same UC system.

i doubt admissions at Oregon State or Was State are much different than KSU or Ok state, really. keep in mind that half of Pac 10 ranks lower than Iowa State in the US News rankings. for every Stanford, there's a Pullman.

Pros:
Adding more teams in the Mountain time zone. Currently we are the only ones in the MTN in the Big 12. Adding Utah plus ASU and U of A part of the year.

Cons:

"13. Probably forces AD to bring back baseball or other sports."

- As much as I would be the first to buy season tickets to baseball, I can see this as a con. It is agreed the number one reason to move is money. Well if we are getting more money when we move but subsequently have to pump that extra money into additional sports, it doesn't really make a positive impact. We are just as financially strapped across more sports.

Unknown:
5. Will the our west-coast centric alumni and fan base open their wallets or give more because of the closer connection? I believe this is the true x-factor because I think the Big 12 attempt to and accomplish some sort of renegotiation to keep itself intact and not lose Missouri, Colorado and/or Texas thus making the financial benefits of moving negligible.

Even though we may have to add sports down the road I think that would be evened out by equal revenue sharing which the Big 12 doesnt have.

I wouldn't mind ending the Nebraska game. The game has gotten stale anyway. Plus our true original rival is Utah. We played them every single season for 37 years, and in the 10 year history of the mountain states confrence from '38-47, CU and Utah finished 1 and 2 in that confrence 5 times. Utah has had a better program than Nebraska anyway the last ten years. Plus Utah's colors are red, we are accustumed to "hating" that color. And the distance and drive time is about the same as Lincoln with better scenery.

Losing the NU game wouldn't be the end of my world. Truth be told, I've grown tired of football on the day after Thanksgiving. It kind of ruins the holiday for me.

Its sad to hear that some of you wont miss playing Nebraska. But I do understand. These are difficult times for cu football, some of you just want the pain to end.

I'm not sure what you mean by that, but whatever. It's not a matter of wanting the pain to end. I'm confident that with the right coach, CU would beat the snot out of *ebraska. That's not the issue for me. I have grown tired of playing the game the day after Thanksgiving, though. It's more of a hassle than it's worth to me.

Plus I wouldn't really say NU has given us a lot of pain this decade. It has mostly been southern Big 12 schools and Missouri. Nebraska has had several severe beatings from our hands and lucked out in most of their wins. In fact I think we have hurt Nebraska's program more this decade (specifically thinking 62-36) than they have hurt ours. We basically ruined that program and they will never be like they were.

True. CU has won 4 of the last 10, so it's not like the fuskers are dominating the series right now. It's just gotten tiresome.

Sure, with the right coach Nebraska would not stand a chance against cu. No one could even begin to argue against that point. I know these are difficult times, my apologies.

He is probably a filthy nub fan that lives in Colorado that will really miss the ****braska game in Boulder.

The roady from Boulder to SLC is pretty sweet. If CU-Utah returned to our historical rivalry, the trip goes through or near Winter Park, Steamboat and Park City before arriving on the Utah campus.

That's just a tad more scenic than Sterling, North Platte and Ogallala.

Here's another argument for the move: Right now, there is this perception that CU doesn't travel well. Of course this is true when talking about travelling to places like stincoln and Ames. We've never had problems selling tickets to games on the West Coast. The ASU game a couple years ago had something like 10K Buff fans there. We never have problems selling tickets to bowl games on the West Coast, either. We simply don't have that many alumni East of here. The Pac -10 is where we belong, I'm among the converted on this issue.

I hate to admit it, but I'm starting to go in that direction. Aside from the distance, everything else about the move makes sense. I think the Big 12 is close to imploding anyway, so let's go now.

I am glad there are some positive about the program. I think CU will be outclassed in the PAC 10 as well both on and off the field. And if Utah comes on baord we will struggle to win skiing. Do you want to go to LA to see CU play USC?? What a cluster that would be. Or heaven forbid go to Pullman in the middle of no where for the only game CU is sure to win?? I will wait and see and thanks for anything positive you can say about CU athletics under the current administration. Over and out.
