Bohn Chimes in on going to the P10

I hope whatever happens, it works out in our favor. We can't afford a disaster on this level. Looks like it will be an interesting off-season.

Bohn's standing with me will as high as Hawk if he jacks this up! Right now he is the tallest of the two midgets...

Yea - political correctness is out in 2010.

It's going to be a bit difficult to wait this out...I sincerely hope that CU flees the sinking ship that is the Big 12 as soon as possible.

OK, there's no way he'd even remotely address this issue if there wasn't at least some talk going on via the backchannels.

This thing feels like its going to move VERY fast. This is a short month, so it's essentially almost March. Then it's only four months until July. We could go into the RMS as a member of the future Pac-12.

maybe a way for Bohn to have a "legacy" at CU. he's got to be thinking that he's in the fire, too. he's done a lot of good PR and "atmosphere" type things but the losing records of his coaching hires are troublesome. being the helmsman of the Pac 10 move might be his saving grace...at least in the near-present and long term.

Totally. If you think about how cagey the AD has been on so many other issues, for him to essentially hold a press conference about it speaks megavolumes.

Interesting to note that he said that there hasn't been an invitation, nor are we seeking one. I'm not sure what to read into that. Perhaps nothing more than what it says, but it seems odd to me that he'd make the statement at all.

There are and will continue to be talks. Nobody, including Bohn has denied it any of the chatter. The term "no contact" means nothing.

Which makes me wonder if the leaks from the Pac 10 and his cryptic news conference are meant to be trial balloons, to get feedback from fans, alumni, & donors about making the move. It's a way for him to say "hey folks, what do you think? Would you be on board with a move like this?" without actually coming out and saying so.

My take? Maybe the comments were kind of a Navy message or something. As in Hunt for Red October, when they are doing light signals and the request to comply is "one ping only." And then there's the ping. Maybe this was Bohn's way of telling the Pac to "get ready to roll" or something.

I work in PR and you just don't make potential third-rail comments like this (however benign they seem now) unless you're ready to take action. This is a big, big deal in my mind.

I tend to agree with you. Something is definitely up.

So which comes first a PAC10 expansion or Big10+1 adding another team?

I have a feeling that CU will remain in the Big12 unless another school leaves first. If Mizzou goes to Big10+1, I think CU leaves to the PAC as soon as possible.

Pac -10 expansion will be first. They are motivated by a TV contract deadline, the Big Ten is only motivated by trying to add additional TV sets to their existing deal which has a much longer time frame on it. The Pac-10 commish said their process would be 6-12 months, while Jim Delaney at the BigTen said they would have a 12-18 month process.

I truly think the BigTen and Pac-10 are working together on this. Both of these conferences have seen their prestige slip in the biggest NCAA sport since the BCS has been enacted. The BigTen, Pac-10, and the Rose Bowl are a separate power block within college football that wields tremendous power. I think they realize they have to live with sharing the football limelight with the SEC, but they'll be damned to bow down to the Big 12 or ACC.

All of the publicity, talk, & chatter of the Buffs possibly going to the P10 has become way to big for Bohn to ignore. It's almost as if it has morphed into it's own domino effect. I expect Mike to release tidbits from time to time that may be construed as the hand writing on the wall. But without really admitting to it.

This really rang true to me at first but then I started thinking about it. I think that the linchpin in all this is Texas. As much as I don't like it, what they do will be the single biggest factor in defining a new college football landscape. Both the Big 10 and Pac 10 want Texas. They'd be stupid not to. It's a good fit from an academic standpoint, the athletics are excellent, and they could pull in more tv ratings than anyone else out there. It's also the reason why I think the Pac-10 and Big 10 aren't working together. I think that they both want Texas and the outcome of the tug of war is going to determine what happens.

No matter who gets them though, the Big 12 will fall apart once they bolt. Here's where it gets sticky for us. We need to secure a spot in the new Pac 12 before any of this goes down because if we wait until the dominoes start to fall, we might get locked out of any conference expansion all together. My ideal situation would be something like this. The Pac-10 decides that it definitely wants to expand and decides that its top choices are Texas and Colorado with Utah as a fallback. Now I really don't want Texas in whatever conference we land in so I kind of hope that we sign on and Texas holds out for a better deal with the Big 10, forcing the Pac-10 to take Utah and leaving no room for BYU or anyone else to sneak in. Then the remainder Big 12 gets broken up and merged with various components of the MWC and the WAC to form two new conferences.

I still think this is just rumor mongering

Regardless of what may or may not happen, I do know this: If any expansion happens on the part of the Big 10 or Pac 10, we're boned unless we are a part of it. The Big 12 will not survive if expansion happens and we need to get off the sinking ship now while we still can. I think that if you believe that the Pac 10 is serious about expansion, you better believe that it's really going to shake things up. If one team out of the Big 12 goes, the whole tower is going to come crashing down.

I just really don't see UT leaving without A&M and I can't see either the Pac-10 or Big 10 wanting both of them.
