nto sure on speed, but I like his hitting. and he seems to wrap up pretty decent when hes not kicking the crap out of someone.

i like him, and his speed shouldn't be an issue at all at ss.

he played on a different team than tony, fwiw.

after looking at his clip again, I like his straight line speed, but he definitely doesn't have any lateral quickness. Looks like a solid SS prospect.

He is a hitter, thats for sure. Good speed and has some instincts too. He looked pretty solid at rb too but he definitely looks good at safety.

All-Passaic football defense, first, second, honorable mention

First team

DB — Terrel Smith, senior, Passaic Tech: This hard-hitting safety was in on 117 total tackles, in addition to defending 24 passes, intercepting three more and causing four fumbles. Also rushed for 1,261 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Word is that he's visiting this weekend and is likely to commit to the Buffs.

This is according to donmac over on the Rivals board, who seems to be pretty tied in with North Jersey athletics (coach?) and started to become active once we gained a verbal from Tony Jones. He definitely has a relationship with Jones and has been hyping some North Jersey prospects (both football and basketball) that may have been missed but would potentially good players for CU.

FWIW, donmac also claims that Terrel Smith is closer to 5'10" tall and is the type of guy who could play very quickly.

Are we talking scholly or PWO, I hope it is the PWO route as he seems a bit small and even with good film and a late qualifier NJ is a hard place to hide if you are a quality prospect.

It also worth mentioning that donmac thinks he is going to be one of the best Buffs ever, so take everything he says with a grain of salt.

This is a reach offer IMO, but it does not really matter anymore because this staff has mostly stopped caring about recruiting.

Please support that argument. They have a bunch of offers out to 2011 guys. I talked to 2 staff members 2 weeks ago and I came away with a very different opinion.

Offers mean very little in the grand scheme of things. We are just going to have to disagree on this issue, a debate is going to go nowhere.

Also, they may care about next season's recruiting; who knows? But I think if you compare all the empiracle evidence from this recruiting season, you'd find that appearances are that the staff quit right before November because they all thought they were as good as gone...only to have to scramble to fill up the class.

Look, I'm pleased that the kids who will be Buffs as part of this class will be. I think there are some real players in there. However, you have to admit that in some cases we were on plan D or F as a result of that lull in effort by the staff.

Even now, I'm sure that even though outward appearances are that they really, really care about bringing in a good class this year that the staff (I would hope) is MUCH more concerned with trying to keep their jobs by winning. It makes me really nervous because I feel like this in-state class could really take the program to the next level.

GB never even pursued the types of players Hawk routinely misses on. Granted DH has not shown us the on field product, but he is definitely no slouch on the recruiting front.

Hi guys -- please remember this is a recruit's thread.

We try to keep the OT comments to a minimum. The comments about current/past coaches and recruiting effort and philosophy are all interesting, but should find another thread to continue.
This thread should mainly be about Terrel Smith, Safeties, and the like.

Thanks.

Thanks, AJ.

Regarding, Smith, I believe the determining factor with him will be when they measure him. He looks more like 5'10" than 5'8" to me in the video. And if you watch the sections with him playing runningback, his agility and burst really show. But I don't believe he's got the straight line speed of a Bob Sanders or Troy Polamalu (or other short safeties who have been great players), so if Smith doesn't measure up my guess is that we'll pass on him just as we did with A.J. Powell.

Looks like a stud on the video. Bring him in for a shot. Preferrably a shot like the first clip in the video on whoever the eff is CSU's starting QB next year.

Committed to the Colorado Buffaloes.
University of Colorado head coach Dan Hawkins added a 22nd member to the school’s 2010 recruiting class Saturday, as safety Terrel Smith signed his letter of intent during his campus visit...

Welcome, Terrel!

Hopefully he can contribute this year on special teams, we could use a bit of an improvement in that area.

New article on Smith from NorthJersey.com

Passaic Tech’s 51-7 loss to Don Bosco on Oct. 30 was the most lopsided defeat Terrel Smith experienced during his three-year varsity career.

PCT’s Terrel Smith says he was misled by some recruiters because of his size. But for Colorado scouts, the films didn’t lie.

It also became the most important game of his life.
Colorado coaches who recruited Don Bosco running back Tony Jones noticed Smith while watching film from that game, which eventually led them to offer Smith a scholarship Saturday during his official visit to the Buffaloes’ campus in Boulder. Smith signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Big 12 school before returning home to Paterson on Sunday.
"Without that game, I wouldn’t have ended up at Colorado," Smith said. "I told myself, ‘I have to do good in the Don Bosco game.’ I felt if I did good, I would get a scholarship from that game. And look what happened."
Smith made 11 tackles and defended five passes against Don Bosco, which prompted Ironmen assistant coach Dave McPherson and others on the staff to urge Colorado’s coaches to recruit Smith. The scouts visited Passaic Tech to watch more film in late January and later asked Jones — who signed to play for Colorado on Feb. 3 — about Smith as a player and a person.
Jones’ strong recommendation also helped Smith’s cause, and now the 5-foot-10, 185-pound safety is eager to reward his new school. Coaches from Central Michigan, Maryland, Pittsburgh and Western Michigan expressed interest in Smith, but Colorado was the only school at any level to offer a scholarship.
"I was very surprised that I only had one offer, and that it was from the Big 12 Conference with big-time football," Smith said. "I was very surprised how recruiters [misled] me in certain ways because of my size. But this is my shot and I’m going to prove everybody wrong for passing me up and letting me fall through the cracks."
The hard-hitting Smith was told by Colorado’s coaches that he could play either free safety or strong safety. He doesn’t expect to be redshirted for his freshman season.
Before heading to Boulder to take summer classes, Smith will continue working out with Jones, a friend since childhood and a former teammate on a Paterson recreation-league team. He also looks forward to enjoying the rest of his senior year.
"This was so stressful," Smith said. "Signing day passed and I was wondering why I wasn’t signed yet. By a miracle, God came through and Colorado came around. They saw that I love to hit and they need a New Jersey attitude on their team. I feel like a weight was just lifted off my shoulders."
Smith’s height hurt his stock among recruiters, but Passaic Tech coach John Iurato is thrilled Colorado saw what Iurato sees in a player who had 117 tackles, defended 24 passes, intercepted three others, caused four fumbles and rushed for 1,261 yards and 10 touchdowns during his senior season.
"Marcel Shipp was in a situation like this," Iurato said, referring to the Passaic Tech alum who played six seasons for the Arizona Cardinals. "Nobody wanted him. At the last minute, I convinced a guy at UMass to take him. The guy took him and look what happened. It worked out pretty good. I hope the same thing happens with Terrel."
