While I was on buffzone looking for the article talking about spring football being reopened, I found this article about Alec Burks. There was a lot of the usual kind of stuff that you would expect but one particular bit stuck out:

Burks is projected as a top-five pick in the 2011 NBA draft at nbadraft.net.
I know it's still a long way away but if he's getting that kind of buzz now, that says something. Props to coach Bzdelik for getting him to Boulder and props to Burks for kicking butt on the court and in the classroom. I'm really excited to see what this team will do next year with that last (and hopefully really freakin' huge) piece of the puzzle in place.

I just went and checked that site and they actually have him up at #3 now. They also have Higgins going at #56.

Yeah I saw that in the Daily today. I was shocked by that. I know he is playing great, but a top 5 pick? He seems a little weak right now, but obviously has a lot of time to build strength before then.

I think it is great he is getting the pub but I don't put him as a top 5 pick. If he was that good he could go as a #1 this year.

I could see it. The NBA drafts on potential. If a team is picking in the Top 5, it's looking for someone with the athletic ability to eventually be a superstar. That's why you take Burks that high. It may take a few years to develop him, but he has a chance at greatness.

But if I'm Burks, I probably stay in college for 3 years. Gets me close to my degree, gives me time to develop NBA strength / an NBA body, and gives me a year to be the man at CU which will do a lot to develop my maturity and leadership skills. Finally, and maybe most importantly, it's likely there will be a lockout for the 2011-2012 NBA season. Why would you want that for your rookie year?

Unfortunately for CU. I think he is a definite 1st round pick next year. If that is the case he should go...

Even if there's an expected lockout? You don't start getting paid until the season starts.

FYI: The NBA-Union agreement expires after the 2010-2011 season. Owners want a hard cap and limits on contract lengths. Players aren't giving that up without a fight. All signs point to a lockout in what would be his rookie year if he came out in next year's draft.

:yeahthat:... i hope...

I'm usually torn in these situations.

On one hand, if AB stays, there is a great chance that he leads CU to the Dance, sets all kinds of schools records, wins conference awards, etc.

On the other hand, if he leaves early, we still get the national recognition/publicity that one of our own went high in the draft, which gives him more of a chance of succeeding in the League.... which is good for the program.
