-Hansen was running with the ones. From what I could see (which was limited due to the setup) he was getting more snaps than cody as well. He looked sharp and vocal.
-Andre Simmons was not there... no idea why.
-Five guys were back there fielding punts: espinoza, speedy, clemons, orms, and I couldn't tell the other guy (they ran out of rosters by the time I got there).
-Clemons can catch punts.
-They were punting from the far end and you couldn't see who was kicking and when, but someone absolutely belted one, probably 65 yards, high and with a perfect spiral. I'm going to assume it was Grossnickel.
-Simas was there but not participating, obviously.
-Devaughn Thronton made an awesome play over the middle. Caught the ball in the air, nailed a safety as he was coming down and continued to run another 30 yards with guys hanging on to him.
-Lots of recruits were there for junior day. I saw Brett Hundley the QB from Arizona, his teammate Michael Okonkwo a WR, and Joseph Farmer a TE from WA.
-I won't blow smoke up your asses, but they were "getting after it" today. Lots of energy, lots of yelling, lots emotion from what I could tell. Lets hope it transfers onto the field this fall.

I'd hope they'd be getting after it...why wouldn't they be?

I remember once upon a time suggesting to posters they we should limit our expectations of Andre Simmons...many wanted nothing to do with that.

Nice! Thanks Bob!

Thornton and Clemons stepping up will be great for us this year, glad to see they are starting off strong.

Thanks, BL.

I think everyone's breathing a little sigh of relief on the Hansen info.

Hopefully they let Clemons return punts. This only makes sense, imo, if our WR depth is where it was supposed to be. If we don't have Simas, Ussery or Simmons, it's kind of hard to justify risking Toney on punt returns.

Love everything I'm hearing about Thornton.

Didn't see Hirschman.

I saw five guys appeared in QB practice. Hansen, Cody, Lobato, #8 and #13. Who is #8 in this case? Evans? Who is #13 then?

I see.

In the last several snaps hansen got 2 mistakes which lead to two interceptions if I didn't remember by wrong. Other than that he looks good.

Good Job BL! Reps to you. What time is practice Monday & Tuesday? I hope to make it up their then.

Sounds good so far, but whoa. This is only the first practice.

A "little sigh".

Honestly, I won't believe that Hansen's the starter until I see him run onto the field against CSU.

either i was still drunk this morning or i've completely lost it, but mcknight, jefferson, and mahnke were also back catching punts.

Rep to you, Bob, for your "practice observations". If you keep up the good work, you'll be ready to move onto "real observations" in the near future.

I dont believe it was Mahnke, I think it was Ryan Maxwell. They are both 12, so I could be mistaking, but it would make more sense (not that anything this staff does makes sense) for it to be Maxwell who is a WR.

Maxwell would make a lot of sense. He's small, but he's a good athlete. Rivals had him as a 3* prospect coming out of high school with 4.4 speed (in reality he's quick, but he's not as fast as Rivals reported). He should be getting an opportunity to return punts.

you're probably right. it was adam who said mahnke was back there, but i'm going to assume he was wrong here.

Bob, you're telling everybody their secrets. You're gonna ruin it for everybody. Now OU knows that they might see Maxwell returning punts. Do you have any idea what kind of hole that puts this program in? Have you ever heard of the element of surprise? Well? Well now it's gone. All thanks to you. Mr. Big shot. I hope you're proud of yourself.

Tuesday 3/9 observations. I saw about an hour from 4:30-5:30, mostly the team running drills and hard to pick up much.

Field Goal drills: Aric Goodman looks fantastic (that's the bad news). Grossnickle and Kirkwood don't quite have the same explosion off their foot.

QB's: Tyler and Cody very vocal. Lobato passes the eyeball test and throws a nice ball. People who've annoited Hirschman the QB of the future are likely disregarding Lobato since he walked on. I wouldn't. They all can throw it in the short/medium pass drills they were doing. Sure is an improvement over a few years ago.

WR's: Simmons was there. Toney Clemons is faster than I thought he'd be. Darden and Simmons both tall and athletic looking. I didn't observe too much here as they weren't close by.

TE's: Deehan has got some beefy arms that are new. Thornton and Evans both athletic in drills. Riddle giving "Clark" a lot of encouragement. I'm not too worried about TE's anymore. I'd guess Luke Walters can play a bit. Hard to tell much from these drills.

OL: Some guys look the part more than others, which may mean nothing. Harris, Dannewicz, Tau (although a bit chunky), Adkins, Solder and MTM all look like D1 linemen. Givens is a bit lean, but noticeably gifted in footwork drills. No sign of Miller (forearm I guess). Seems like Stevens is one of the leaders. There's some beef here now.

Defense - I couldn't see too much.
DL: No sign of West or Pericek today. Cunningham, Obi, Goree, Kasa, Herrod, and some walk-ons were doing drills with Romeo. No Hartigan in this group either.

Heard Hawkins yelling at the offense in a drill against some dummy D.

Appreciate the updates - for those of us who can't make the practices, it's great to hear what you see.

On the field goals, Goodman is known for high, arching kicks, sometimes known as "rainbows." Always has. However, Grossnickle's line drives are statistically more accurate, through the uprights. Compare the arch to say, pitching, and you know that aiming right for what you want to hit (the space that matters) is going to be more accurate than trying to throw a ball high in the air and still have it land in the strike zone. Different mechanics, but similar results.

Watching Goodman booming them at practice last year is what convinced Hawkins to play him regardless, because he looks like a kicker. They need to see who is making the kicks, not how pretty they are. Goodman's high kicks may work well for kickoffs, but obviously, he is unable to hit the 18-foot spread between the uprights consistently. He didn't do it in high school, not at Wyoming and not at CU. I'd give him a bad year, but it's going on five years now. It's time to have him concentrate on KOs, IMO.

Hope the coaches are paying attention in that regard. One guy I know who watched Saturday's practice said in one drill each kicker did 5 fg attempts from the same distances, short to long, starting at about the 20 and ending at the 40. Goodman made 3 of 5, and Grossnickle was 5 for 5. (There could have been other kicking practice he missed, he just watched and reported on a five FG competition per kicker and noted the accuracy stats.) No word on Kirkwood's accuracy.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooo.

Thanks for the update guys. Always nice to read about the practices since some of us can't see them for ourselves.

Goodman's the Anna Kournkova of kickers. It sure looks pretty, but....
