WBB: Candidates to Replace KMM

At this point, I can't think of a single good reason to retain K-Mac as our head women's basketball coach. After another loss Saturday, her team is 3-13 in the Big 12, 13-16 overall, and losers of 11 of its last 12 games. This on the heels of the 2008-09 team that also went 3-13 in the Big 12 (11-18 overall).

As I've stated before, the timing is perfect:

- 2010 recruiting class is already signed (new coach won't have a last minute scramble)
- 2011 class could be truly special with the excitement of a new coach, a new practice facility and (likely) an announcement that CU will be joining the PAC
- Talent is in place for a very strong 2010-11 season, so we should be able to attract a good coach (not a rebuilding job)
- A clause in K-Mac's contract allows us to get out of it after this year and owe less than $200k

Here's my top choice as a replacement after doing an internet search:

Beth Burns
Head Coach: San Diego State

Notable:

  • Winningiest coach in SDSU history
  • Hired by Mike Bohn for 2nd stint (after she spent several years at Ohio State)
  • Worked for several years as an assistant coach under Ceal Barry at CU in the 1980s
  • Career .580 winning %
  • Holds a Master's Degree and has coached 30 Academic All-Conference athletes
  • 6 NCAA teams and 1 WNIT Champion in 17 years at SDSU and OSU
  • This season (her 18th year) has her SDSU team in 3rd place in the MWC at 18-10 (a good bet to become her 7th 20-win team)
  • Strong recruiting ties to San Diego which, coupled with Colorado in-state recruiting, can deliver just about all we need

That would be a good choice,a change is needed.

Burns should be at the top of the list. If she's not interested Bohn should look within conference for A&M associate HC Kelly Bond. Knows the Big 12 and a killer recruiter.

I seriously doubt the Illinois St. coach will come to Colorado. Seems like she and her husband are comfortable in Normal.

I don't quite agree with this statement about Burns. Her resume isn't all that impressive - she seems like a quality coach, but CU Buffs W Bball used to be an elite program...I'm not convinced if she will bring us back to elite status.

I honestly don't know too many women's coaches except for the top programs, so I can't think of too many candidates. However, I'm wondering about a male coach? They've seemed to have done well in the women's ranks. I'd prefer a great female coach, but I don't think we need to cut out 50% of the population based on sex. I wonder if there's a good coach out there that just didn't seem to connect with male players...

For example, and this is completely sexist of me to say (LB and others, if you still patrol these boards, feel free to bitch me out), but take Hawk - if there was a female football team, I think he'd be awesome for that. He's a good guy, knows "some" football, personable, trustworthy, etc. We need to find the equivalent of Hawk in men's bball, and allow him to thrive in womens bball...but I want someone that knows Xs and Os better than Hawk knows football.

This is just our problem. We used to be elite. Given our top 3 programs all dropped off significantly since the early 2000s when they were all above average, I don't think we can get a name that's already established among casual women's BB fans. We have to get someone who's built a respected program in the mid-major ranks or go after the top assistant of a perennially ranked team. The modern Big 12 just as tough a women's basketball conference each year as it is for the men, and it will take someone special to get us to consistently challenge for a finish in the top half. But because of our relatively marginal allure to those considered "top" candidates in the sport, we will have to get there with someone who isn't vastly coveted by every power conference school with a potential vacancy.

Hey, if we could get someone like McClain to be the WBB head coach I'd be ecstatic. I don't care about the gender thing at all. I just want to win while maintaining the standards that program has had for decades on academics and personal conduct. One guy to take a long look at would be Corey Gaines (ex-Nugget who coaches the WNBA Phoenix Mercury and won a championship). I believe we could offer a significant pay raise and a lot more job security. WNBA salary cap for an entire team is like $800k and I believe coaches make under $250k. Also, the WNBA may have trouble surviving while the NBA owners are losing so much money and meanwhile are financing that league as Stern's pet project.

Back to Burns, her record is better than it looks on the surface. Her first time at SDSU, her record went from 7-23 to 14-14 to 18-11 to 19-9 to 4 straight 20-win seasons. This time, she's gone from 3-24 to 12-16 to 18-13 to 24-8 with 18 and counting this year. Ohio State was more up and down with win totals going from 15 to 17 to 13 to 22 to 14. She's more of a safe choice than a dynamic choice. But ties to Ceal and Bohn plus a resume as a consistent winner (and good citizen) likely translates into a good fit for the Lady Buffs program. I'm sure she'd have us playing in the postseason nearly every year.

Whatever happens when this school decides it needs a new WBB coach, I demand Ceal Barry and Lisa Van Goor head the search committee. I would respect their decision as no two people I can think of have given more to that program the last three decades.

When I was at Boulder High, we had a coach that absolutely ruled girls basketball in the State of Colorado. She left BHS to be an assistant at a small college somewhere, and is now the head coach at some place called Viterbo University. Her record flat out sucks now, so I'm not sure she'd be the choice for us, but in her day, she was the best there was. Just goes to show that a solid high school coach isn't always a good choice for a college position.

She's a CU alum, also.

That's a MAN, baby!!!!

Since I don't follow WBB, what is the problem with McConnell-Miller? Is it that she can't recruit or is it that she can't coach or both? The State of Colorado may not be a hotbed for football, but it is pretty damned elite in women's basketball and soccer. I'd think a top coach could do great things at CU.

She's been a pretty good recruiter. We did not have a glaring talent disadvantage in any game we played this year.

Will a change be made? It's obvious to anyone outside of the cu athletic department and administration that a change needs made.

And let's face it, K-Mac wasn't exactly sporting a killer resume when she got here. She built up a bad program at Tulsa to a 91-88 career record there. Not exactly lights out when you consider the weakness of that conference in women's hoops, the great recruiting area that program is in, and the incredible arena they have for basketball. She did a nice job there, for sure, but she was not an elite candidate at the time CU hired her. Now she has failed. Time to move on.

Not to bash bohn but, his track record with hires is below average. Way below average.

nice find!

Also a veteran of the Princeton gymnasium. I can picture him and Bz sitting in lawn chairs outside the new practice facility sipping brews and discussing offensive strategies. Me likey!

Don't care. Women's basketball is crap.

I would think that you care whether our WBB program is able to draw enough fans, appear on tv enough, and go to the postseason often enough to financially break even instead of being a drain on the athletic department. I would also think that you care whether CU tries to be achieve excellence in whatever it pursues. Hell, you cared enough to post in this thread.

This. The schools that are committed to excellence in every scholarship sport they field bring in the best coaches in the game, which in turn helps recruiting, gives spectators tangible results and banks more and more cash for the athletic department. In seeing how such schools operate their AD, I get a tremendous sense of envy and wish CU could become an athletic juggernaut across the board. A good team in any sport will get the fringe fans of that sport into the venue more easily, and that plus the take for postseason events and championships will drive up revenue across the board for the school's athletic programs. I'm not a fan of skiing or cross country, but I definitely care about CU's success in those as well. I just wish that dominance could extend to our revenue sports.

I can't stand the game of basketball. Women's basketball in particular is totally unwatchable, IMO. That doesn't mean I don't care if the CU team does well or not. I want them to win and be successful. I want the soccer team to be successful, too, that doesn't mean I'm planning on taking in any games.

At the end of the day, I suspect K-Mac will keep her job through the term of her contract. Bohn has more pressing issues to deal with right now than an underperforming non-revenue sport.
