about the reinstatement of Simas?

There are lots of ways to look at this one:

1. The Hawk is a pathetic hypocrite who is just trying to save his job.

2. The Hawk is a Solomon-esque guy who does what's best in each situation for the life development of his kids.

3. All the talk about the Hawk doing things the right way has always been a PR crock. Claiming to do things the right way is the refuge of losers.

4. The Hawk is finally doing what all the other winning programs do: Keep your best guys on the team unless someone ended up in the morgue.

5. WTF, a DUI is a small matter when faced with the prospect of Simas, Clemmons and Scotty at WR.

However you feel about it, one is for sure: MS's comment to the effect that, in the future, he'll just pass out wherever he happens to be, is one of the most moronic things ever uttered. Hawk has got to be wondering if he made a mistake on this one.....
 
I am very happy to see him back from the perspective of improving the team. But based on his comments, Simas does not get it. I doubt that he avoids getting into more trouble. And yes, I agree with items 1 and 3.
 
Hawk is a clown but we need a winning season... We need Simas to be on the field in order for us to have a shot at a winning season..
 
Add in his other comment:

"I've got to keep my name clean for a few weeks" and you could reach the conclusion that this is a kid who is stopping by CU, on the way to the NFL (and major money) and just wants to max his enjoyment.
 
Punishment hasn't gotten through to him. Maybe positive reinforcement (and being in the team structure) will do the trick. I think it's a good thing that Hawk is willing to have some flexibility in his disciplinary style. Hopefully it works. I'd hate to see Simas piss this opportunity away.

But for MS's comments -- made to the press, no less -- I would agree that flexibility makes sense. The comments, though, show a complete lack of understanding of the stakes, his situation and the values that matter to the program. When you get cut a break, you've got to talk the talk for at least a day or two. Failure to do so shows that you just don't get it. Simas seems like another talented athlete who has gotten through life by having a different and less stringent set of rules apply to him.

For crying out loud, based on Simas' performance at the end of last season, this kid should realize that he's playing for a chance to play on Sundays and that he has to do the right thing to make sure that happens. I think he gets the part about Sundays and he doesn't get the part about doing the right thing.

Like I said before, I'm sure Simas' comments to the press made DH sick and made him regret that he started down this path.
 
I gotta admit that the "punishment" of sitting out three spring practices seems really weak. If that ends up being the extent of the punishment (i.e, not missing any games), I am really going to be disappointed. Whatever.

Hawk consistently disappoints me. Why would this time be any different? Agree with #1 and #3.
 
Mac would have played him. some of you might not want to hear that.

he didn't hurt anyone. he's very lucky to get another chance. if he blows it again, he's gone and i am sure he knows it. you can't control 100+ guys at all times. you have to set up a culture and system where they are discouraged from getting in trouble. if you screw that up, you end up like what oregon is going through now. the goal isn't perfect behavior, however. you put them in an environment where they have a good chance to succeed at every part of it--- personal, academic, and athletic. some will get it and some won't. some will behave so badly that they'll have to leave. others will prosper and flourish beyond what anyone except maybe their mothers believed possible. this is life.

you have to consider the nature of the violation. he didn't do anything violent. he just made a stupid mistake that many kids make. it isn't like he beat up a gal at a bar or asked his coach to hide a gun, etc.
 
If it was his first offense, fine. If Hawkins had not suspended Adkins for the same offense for half a season, fine. But as of now, the "punishment" seems extremely light for a guy that continues to let those in the program down time and time again.
 
Happy. Pure, unadulterated joy.

Let the law deal with legal infractions and football coaches deal with football.
 
I'm happy he is back and also firmly believe his punishment is far from over. At least a 1 game suspension is coming and I expect 2, to start the season. If he were a freshman I could see him being tossed from the team, then getting another chance at a different school but at this stage in college it would be hard for him to transfer and attempt to right the problems he has made. It should be a privilege to put on the silver and black and gold, no doubt. Coach Hawkins was brought in years ago to clean up the mess that was left so I do not think he is bending the rules or compromising his integrity. Plenty of players have been reprimanded under his tenure and a few great ones dismissed as well. Let's hope that the past is the past and the next time we hear Simas' name, it because he is on Sportscenter in a Top 10 play.
 
so glad he's back. We need him, if he would have robbed someone, I still would have welcomed someone of his talents back!:smile2:

Seriously though, people don't know what his punishment is, maybe he is still doing something. love it when fans think they know it all on a message board.:thumbsup:
 
I don't claim to know everything, but if he does not miss any games due to this, I think it is pure bull**** and Hawkins will deserve any sort of flack he gets. JMO though.
 
1 and 3. Hawkins is a complete joke. Simas should miss 3-4 games. Hawkins has lost control and the players know it.

Insofar as not a violent crime, I totally disagree. He's lucky he didn't seriously hurt someone. His alcohol % was not borderline.
 
You can't judge a man by his quotes to the press, but it sure seems like Simas doesn't quite get it from the things he says. Also, I don't think dismissing his behavior because it was a DUI and not an assault or "violent crime" is short sighted. Getting a DUI requires a complete lack of planning and foresight. Getting into a fight is often a heat of the moment thing. Also, you very rarely kill innocent bystanders in a fight, you are fall more likely to kill/seriously injure innocent bystanders when you drive drunk.

I was also slightly troubled by the note at the end of the DC column that Stewart is sitting out practice to focus on school work. I really hope he's not going to have eligibility issues considering how seriously thin we are at RB right now.
 
First off, unless it is something major (robbery, criminal act resulting in injury to another etc. ) IMO coaches should let the legal process deal with it. The problem here is Hawk, in his customary holier than thou, I know more than everybody else way has set the bar at a level nobody else does. The suspension of Adkins for half a year or whatever it was, the canning of the LB who got drunk and went into the dorm or whatever it was, now Hawk breaks his own "one time is a mistake, two times a behavior" rule. It makes him look like a jack***, losing make him look even more so.
 
I'm conflicted on this. I think the right thing to do is to punish more severely. Sadly I am so desperate for this program I am willing to overlook it because he is a real talent and playmaker on gamedays and we need him bad.
 
I'm thrilled he's back. We need players and we need playmakers. He's a playmaker. I'll skip over the holier-than-thou routine. I don't care what Hawk's justifications are. I'm glad he reinstated him. Hawk understands that he needs all hands on deck this season and he also understands that Simas is his best receiver. Hawk doesn't have the luxury of ethics anymore. He needs players.
 
Id like to think he is doing it for all the right reasons but I cant say that with a straight face. I think he will be punished more in the fall. If he misses no games tho, you definitely have to put choice #1 as part of Hawk's thinking on this imho.
 
4 years ago this would have really bothered me, but I'm so desperate for this team to win that all I really care about is getting talent on the field.
 
Since Simas has been at practice, its hard to say what Talkins will do. On the surface, it certainly appears that he's giving Simas the benifit of the doubt. When it comes to punishment, if all things are equal, Talkins should not treat this infraction by a player any differently than how he has handled similer violations with other players in the past. If he goes light on Simas, then he has some serious explaining to do to the rest of the team. I'm not going to pass judgement just yet, but this guy clearly has issues.
 
My very first impression was that "Hawkins is under a ton of pressure to turn it around next year. He knows his job is on the line. He's cutting Simas slack that he hasn't cut anyone else previously." I think that when he took over, he really was almost forced to take a tough stand on behavior, given the problems of the past. But I also think he may have gone a bit overboard on some of the kids. So, in a way, I'm glad to see a bit of relaxation in the Simas case. Hell, the Oregon coach is pretty much letting his QB off the hook for theft. And he wasn't pissed so much about the theft, but he was pissed about him lying about it! I don't think a coach should set a bar like "three strikes." It can come around to bite you.

Uh, suspended for the whole season is off the hook?
 
I think you meant the RB, DBT. He was only suspended for the home opener.
