Steven Hicks is leaving the team

That's too bad. We can't get many texas kids to come here as it is and we certainly don't need to lose the ones we do get.

Is this the kid whose dad used to come on one of the pay sites and talk up his kid and how much he wanted to be a Buff? or am I thinking Baker?

The guy who was passed over by UT, A&M, Tech, Baylor, and TCC....

some times your **** gets really tiresome, this guy was offered by:

Tennesse
Purdue
Nebraska
Mizzery
Okey lite

And had interest from:
A&M
FLorida
LSU

He was a player in highschool, he just didn't pan out for us.

This was a good thing for the program.

If Hawk had been fired in November, Hicks was one of the first guys a new coach would have made sure he ran off. He couldn't play at this level and was hanging on academically by the skin on his teeth.

Hopefully he'll find a better situation for himself and we'll find a better use for that scholarship.

What affect does it have on our APR?

Every scholarship player is worth a possible 2 points. 1 for being eligible/on track to graduate and one for remaining on the team. If he leaves while eligible, he's a 1/2. If he leaves while ineligible, he's a 0/2. If our aggregate APR dips below the NCAA minimum standard, the usual penalty is that you lose a scholarship for every 0/2.

(I need to double-check this, but I think that's right.)

So assuming he is ineligible, hence his suspension for academics, we could stand to lose his scholarship anyway?

I don't really keep up with that stuff, but weren't we already skirting along pretty close?

We're expected be be penalized 5 scholarships when the APR is calculated this spring and the 2008-09 academic year is put into the numbers. This is why the football team was so far below the 85 limit last season. This was anticipated and we took the penalty early.

I guess my suggestion that TCC (Tarrant County Community College) passed him over was over the top.....
But, I hate to say that my cynical view may continue until we return to respectability. I estimate that to be 2014 at the earliest. Thus, you may consider placing me on your ignore list if you are tired of my sarcastic (and sometimes juvenile) commentary.

Well so much for Hawk's squawk on graduating players in his program. I don't see this happening at most other football schools. Yet another reason to dump this guy.

He is not a major loss, except for two factors: the Texas angle and the fact he is another secondary player gone. For whatever reason, we have struggled with Texas recruiting and now have lost the only two players we signed from Texas in the 2008 class. That makes a difference when you try to bring more Texas guys on board.

As far as secondary depth, we are definitely going to rely on some you guys this season, as it looks like Anthony Wright is not going to be available. We cannot afford ANY injuries back there or things are going to get hairy real quick.

let me know when Hawkins is leaving, now that would be some good news........good luck to this kid in what ever he goes after...

So, the 2009-10 school year will have Lagrone Shields, Darrell Scott, and Steven Hicks still to affect our APR for the next calculation? And maybe Anthony Wright?

With Sumler and Lawson also transferring but not until after they graduate.

Sumler and Lawson won't have any effect on the APR.

Then you are not watching. This is happenign at ALL other schools. The rate of guys falling to the wayside due to academics or discipline issues has been dropping. Without doing a detailed and comprehensive tally, I'm pretty sure it's been trending to above-average here at CU for sure.

To lose a guy who had been passed-by by younger players such as Orms is non-news. Evidently, this guy has had problems getting serious about playing vs. partying since his arrival. No program is going to nail that anywhere close to 100%. You are going to have a few that just don't make it no matter how much screening you do. You also are going to take some risks on kids and hope they figure-it-out.
