Kicking game

As I have stated before....Marcus Kirkwood is going to get the job done. In Aric's absence Kirkwood has stepped up. There is no reason for him not to start this year. But with this coaching staff nothing will surprise me. Also.......... Ryan Aweida was coach hawks worst mistake in his coaching career, said so himself!!!!!!!!!!

You do realize that no one on this board has any say, whatsovever, in getting your kid the kicking job, right?

Think I can make a diff. On a forum? I'm letting people know what's really going on. Daily camera does same thing. Yea he is my client, but he must make fg to win the job, so settle down. For everyone else, good competition going on, go to practice and check it out yourself.

What is going on here? Who is the kicker? And more imoprtantly, who is saying the kid is his "client"? If this is a parent, I can see why the kid ended up as a kicker.

:wtf:

If Hawk thinks a walk-on kicker was his biggest coaching mistake ever then he really is crazy. Or stupid.

this thread is funny. I'm gonna call the Hawk and see what kind of funny business is going on with the kicking and I urge you all to do the same.

What exactly does that mean? Is he booming kickoffs consistently out of the end zone? Is he nailing field goals from 40, 45, and 50 yards with a "live game" snap and a defense trying to block? I don't know what drills they are running, but can you elaborate?

:wtf:

This guy is a private kicking instructor, the kid his is pimping pays him for coaching, I think he worked with Davis as well, possibly a couple other kickers who've attended/attend CU. I'll find the link.

I've been getting mixed reports on the kickers. Tough to sift through the filter of who has an agenda, who doesn't know wtf he's talking about, and who is giving an honest and unbiased opinion. Here's the impression I have gotten after trying to sort this out...

Aric Goodman: Kicks a beautiful ball that gets up into the air in a hurry. He's also got a big leg. For kickoffs, he's pretty much ideal because if he leaves one short it's got enough hang time for the coverage team to get down field. But he will also put a good number deep into the end zone or through it for touchbacks. As a punter, I haven't heard one good thing about him. The only reason I can see to keep having him practice there would be if we ever needed to trot someone out due to an injury emergency. As a placekicker, he's rarely going to get one blocked. Since he gets the ball up so fast, he's probably our most reliable bet on extra points. However, he is inconsistent with his accuracy and has shown that he's not clutch when there is game pressure. When someone has repeatedly lost a job in game situations, it doesn't make much sense for him to win it back in practice. And from the reports, it doesn't look like he is.

Marcus Kirkwood: Big enough leg and enough height on his kickoffs to push Goodman for kickoff duties. As a placekicker, he's been more consistent than Goodman or Grossnickle at the spring practices so far. But he's not blowing anyone away, either. Non-factor at punter.

Zach Grossnickle: More of a laid back guy who doesn't seem to get fazed when bad things happen, which is a good quality to have in a kicker. (As opposed to Goodman, who a lot of people think takes himself too seriously and gets shaken when things don't go his way or anyone questions him.) The negative on Grossnickle's attitude is that he doesn't seem to be passionate about football. Kicking is just something he's really good at and got him a scholarship. Some of the bad punts and kicks people see with him at practice are often because he's tinkering with something (curious/fun to try/see if he can do it) or because he's not focused. As a punter, once he decides on a routine and a consistent approach, he could be great. Amazing hang time. Issues with distance and directional control right now. He probably doesn't factor in as a kickoff guy. As a kicker, he's got a big leg and he kicks better under pressure. Inconsistent, though, and the trajectory on his kicks is awful. If he's our placekicker, we'll probably see some get blocked this year.

Justin Castor: Big leg and seems to be passionate about kicking. Also a pretty big team guy and a good athlete (ran track & played WR). The coaching staff is very eager for him to get on campus. They would like to redshirt him so there is separation between him and Grossnickle. But if no one steps up at kicker, they're hoping that Castor blows everyone away for the kicking duties, because they haven't been impressed by anyone so far. If he can also push Grossnickle a bit as a punter, that would be icing on the cake.

Thanks for the summary. WTF, though? Why are we in this situation with kickers where all of them seem to suck tapir dong? It seems like it should be a relatively easy issue to address through recruiting.

Nice report Buffnik. Just somebody, anybody please kick the ball through the damn uprights. I don't want Hawk having to decide whether or not to go for it on 4th down and 8 from the opponent's 25 yard line.

When I was a student at CU (Neuheisel, Barnett years), I lived in the dorms with one of the kickers and I asked him once if they practice with the rest of the team, and I'll never forget he told me they would kick about a dozen balls then play hacky sack while the rest of the team did drills, then they'd stop and kick another dozen balls and maybe run a few sprints. We were a decent team at the time, so I didn't care, but this was several years after hacky sack became really lame.

so. this is what it has come to...

we are down to complaining about PT for kickers.

to the original poster, by the way: do you suppose you are doing your "clients" any favors by bagging on the staff and the players ahead of your clients on this site? you do realize that people from the CUAD, plus parents and players, read this site, right?

oh, and, how do you think the parents of the kickers who paid you to help them feel about their kids' prospects possibly being negatively impacted by your public ranting here? if i were one of those parents, i'd be pretty pissed off that i paid you anything, given that you are likely to do more harm than good with these types of posts.

So you knew Nick Pietsch too?

I refuse to have an opinion on this subject until Alfred comments on it.

 Hey, I've been busy.

Nothing new to add here, except this bit from CUattheGame.com

Goodman out

Senior Aric Goodman, placekicker for the Buffs the past two seasons, has not practiced this week. Goodman was scheduled to see a doctor Wednesday for what CUBuffs.com described as an ailing hip. In his stead, walkon Marcus Kirkwood has been making an impression. Kyle Ringo is reporting on Scout. com that Kirkwood has a good chance at earning the responsibility of handling kickoffs, and has “at least a chance of winning the place kicking job”.

If the name Marcus Kirkwood is not familar to you, you are not alone. Kirkwood is a junior walk-on with two years of eligibility remaining. He went to Faith Christian High in Arvada before attending Concordia College (I’m assuming the one in Moorhead, Minnesota, though there are others – there is no official bio of Kirkwood on the Buffs’ website). Kirkwood is 6′6″ tall, and, get this, kicks lefty.
Informed Allbuffers know Kirkwood went to school in the northwest before Colorado, Concordia College in Oregon, not Minnesota, but that's spitting hairs.

Kicker77, not sure when you are coming back or if you read old threads instead of starting new ones, but was curious about the bolded part. (Feel free to add your kicking comments to this thread, you don't have to start a new one each time.)

regarding your post: Do you mean NOT playing Aweida was Hawk's biggest mistake? I can only agree that I heard Aweida was coming along at the end of last season and didn't understand why they never played him. Is that what you are getting at?

I don't know if anyone else watches this stuff, but I just re-watched the punting combine highlights. His longest punt was 61 yards with a hangtime of 4.69.

What in the heck happened since July 2008 to spring of 2010?

Maybe the extra 65 feet in elevation at Superior versus Boulder?

Maybe the relaxed atmosphere of the "combine" where he was dropping the ball to himself, instead of having it snapped to him at practice with 100 other players around?

Maybe the 2009 season he spent at CU where he was exposed to the phenomenon called the "Riddle Effect"? see case-study Matt DiLallo: 2006-2009
