We're going to be throwing the ball 50+ times per game

From Camera article this morning:

Running the football hasn`t been a heavy emphasis for the Buffs this spring because the offense is playingto its strengths, which are experienced quarterbacks and a deep group of wide receivers, offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau said.

Seems smart to me. Let's ride our 5'10" quarterback that can't see over the LOS or the 4.9 second 40 yard dash running "athletic" quarterback that hasn't proven he can win.

Hell, why even practice running the football? True, we have an All-Big 12 tackle, another player that could be All-Big 12 (Ryan Miller) and some decent prospects on the offensive line, but whatever we do, let's not be a tough-nosed football team. I'd hate that we go 7 on 9, or run the Oklahoma drill, or do anything that makes us a more physical football team.

Shoot. Me. Now.

So, out of 50 attempts, we'll complete 20, have 5 interceptions and 10 batted balls.

Yep.. Frickin circus up in Boulder.. Didn't Talkins come into Boulder talking about how they used to run the ball really well at Boise State? I guess thats out the window now..

One possibility:

Trying to get a QB picked. Throw it often and let's see who seperates.

Top two RB's are currently hurt. 4 more coming in August.....

You're kidding right? If they haven't figured out who's better by now then we have serious issues.

He's throwing **** on the wall and seeing if it sticks. Where did that power running game go? He's making it up as he goes along and for a guy who's all about having a system in place, why is it he can't find one that works here?

Going 3 wide and airing it out sounds like the right plan to me.

Hopefully with a lot of shotgun and quick passes. Opens up the running lanes for Speedy, too.

Seriously, what would you guys suggest instead? We are not set up to be a smash mouth running team. We are not set up to be a vertical passing team. This offensive philosophy fits what we have and it is exactly what we should be doing, imo.

This philosophy also fits Tyler a lot better than Cody. With Tyler back there, the threat to run the zone read, or any kind of designed QB run is always there and always something the defense has on it's mind. With Cody back there, they know we aren't throwing deep, they know Cody isn't going to tuck and run, it'll limit the WRs and RBs quite a bit when it comes to YAC.

Nik, I gotta disagree with you here. We may be set up to run a quick passing game IF we had an offensive line that could pass block. We were the most sacked team in CU history last year because teams knew we couldn't AND wouldn't try to run the ball. We can't pass block for SH*T.

I'm a fan of a balanced offense. To have a balanced offense, you've got to be able to run the ball. What the hell is this talk that we're not practicing running the football in the spring? It's mickey mouse football.

Hell, I'm not saying we need to run the flex-bone like GA Tech (not that I'd mind), but you need to be able to run it up the middle for 4 yards on 1st and 10 or pick up a 3rd and 2 by lining up in a 2 TE set, running an iso play with the fullback and cramming it down the defense's throat.

I don't think I've ever heard a football coach before come out and say "we don't value the running game." Not even Mike Leach would do that.

A quick passing game helps you when you're not a good pass blocking team. There isn't time for the DLs to get there. It also tires those guys out or makes them try to get up field too fast, which opens running lanes. It also keeps teams from blitzing you much, because they can't get there in time.

And it can still be fairly balanced. You're just passing to set up the run instead of the other way around. Look at stats from the Nebraska game at the end of 2009 when we were doing a lot of this. We had 44 passes to only 28 rushes (and I believe 4 of Tyler's 5 runs were supposed to be passes), weren't efficient in the passing game (under 50% completions), but it still made our running game a lot more effective than it had been all year. The idea is to turn that 21/44 performance you see below into a 31/44. If we do that, this offense could be damn good. And, frankly, it's what we're built to do.

I thought we would be throwing it 50+ times a game because running the ball isn't good for 4th quarter 20 point comebacks.

It's disappointing that we haven't seen a ball control, ground attack on offense, with the defense and special teams setting us up for field position, since Barnett was excused. I like our strength at receiver, but if there is no desire by our coaches to develop a strong running game, we're toast. Chuck and duck.

Didn't we throw the ball something like the first 12 offensive plays in a row against Okie St.? I think that is when I realized that, if Hawkins came back, we would be going to a primaily passing attack in '10. I think last year they thought they'd be able to set up the passing game by establishing the run. When that **** the bed, the evolved their thinking that they would use the passing game to set up the run in '10. It actually almost worked against Okie St. We'll see, won't we?

Whatever happens, I'd like our kicker to be able to make his/her field goals. Goodman, really has had a knack for shifting or killing any momentum.

Oh, so now in year 5 we've found the offense that fits? In this scheme, it requires ACCURACY. Do we have QB's who can show this and move the chains? What happens when teams with quick LB's drop back and start reading our qb's eyes? What happens if cody starts, theres nobody open and our OL which has not shown it can pass block on a consistent level, has to try and hold off the defense for 5-7 seconds?

It's 4th and 1, or 4th and 2, who's going to power ir for the first down?

My point is this, hawk has changed this offense practically every year. There is no system in place and it's year 5. I guess we are just going to come out and blow people away with this new offense, I bet there won't be any worries at all. Every year it's" Oh, this is the right offense,we will smoke teams".

I'll believe it when I SEE it.

All that just explains why you and everyone else is pissed and wanted 2009 to be the end of the Hawk era. But that did not happen. It's the 2010 season, Hawk is our coach, the staff is pretty much the same, and the offense is pretty much the same cast of characters as last year. Given all that, what seems to be the best plan for CU to have a successful offense? Based on what I've seen, it's going 3 wide and throwing the ball a lot.

And on the short yardage issue, I agree that this is the main drawback of this offense. But when your RBs are 5'6", you don't have a FB on your roster, and your OL hasn't shown it can blow people off the ball... let's just say that I think you'd be more upset at the ridiculousness of it if the coaches announced we were going to be a power running team this year. We need to find something we do well and hang our hats on it. Seems to me that what they're doing is our best opportunity to make that happen.

maybe this is all smoke and mirrors and they are secretly bringing the hawk version of 98g back. they will unveil it 4th quarter of nebraska game.

Maybe the 5th time is the charm, I hope they do find something that works. I just wonder if we have a BIG 12 qb to run this offense.
