Hawk does not like using those excuses...

I try real hard to be fair, so tell me if I'm wrong here.

I have it in my head that Hawk has used the "we had some guys out / dinged up" excuse on numerous occasions. Am I wrong?

Only the past few seasons. Hence the hilarity.

Even if he hadn't used that excuse before, it's just hilarious that he says first he doesn't like using excuses, then makes an excuse.

No argument here. However, 2008 was statistically the most injury riddled season (1 and 2 deep losses over the season) ever in Colorado history. So I didn't have a problem with Hawk that season, especially since they were at least playing with heart and were a Nebraska all time longest field goal in history from going bowling. That is what made last season so absolutely baffling, and really derailed my Hawk love too.

Yes, he did, but he didn't like it.

That echoes my sentiments perfectly.

The injuries are not the only factor allowing the defense to dominate this spring. The offense has simplified things in an effort to perfect some basic plays and concepts making it easy for the defense to know what is coming, Hawkins said.

Somewhere every opposing defensive coordinator is smiling.

No. You have it wrong. It's not that he doesn't like using excuses, it's that he doesn't like using those excuses. It's all part of taking care of the little things - finding new excuses. If one excuse isn't working, you have to try another one, and another one, and another one and keep finding those new excuses until you find one that works. That's taking care of the little things, and that's what we need to get from this coaching staff.

Last year somebody did a satire of a Hawk interview transcript. Was it Buffnut99 maybe? Does anybody remember that thread? Pure genius.

OK, honest question: Is there any chance that Hawkins could do any kind of press conference or interview without most of you guys ripping him for something? He says the exact same things every god damned football coach since football began. The way I took it is that he isn't excusing the bad play on injuries and then is saying that in the type of scrimmage they had it's hard to find a rythm. Why the hell is that so offensive, no pun intended, to you guys? I'll say this again, many of you go out of your way to rip him whether he deserves it or not. In this case, not. What would a thread like this be without DBT's voice of reason? :smile2:

When he wins more than he loses, he will have earned a pass from me. Until then, he's nothing but a bunch of hot air. Blah, blah, blah. All talk, no action.

Well, he isn't going to have a chance to prove anything until starting in September, so maybe we should just relax a bit and stop looking for every little reason to rip him until then. Thats all I'm saying. There isn't a whole helluva lot that he can do until the season begins.

In all honesty, no there is not a presser he could do right now that he would not get ripped for. That is why you see crappy quotes like this one to emailed questions. His leash is so short you will not see a presser between now and the end of spring. He may do one after the spring game but I doubt it. After all of the bull**** quotes he has had in the last year (come on DBT, I know even you can think of a few) he will not be in front of many microphones. CU knows that he is a liablity and they are trying to keep him away from the public as much as possible. They know he was a mistake but were kept from making the change last year. I believe they are counting the days until they can cut him loose. Other coaches are starting to bail on him in the press (and by the way, they talk to the press much more than the Hawk does now). This pain will end around Nov and we will all be able to move on. Who cares what he says anyway.

That would be Allbuff's finest hour...which reminds me of a Duran Duran song and the Teen Witch sound track.

The reason he gets ripped by everybody is because he has had a chance to prove everything for 4 years. You say he can't do anything until September? He has already dug his hole and now he has to lie in it. He did say something I agreed with recently:

"I like the fact that our fans want and expect a winner. I came here because of the championship tradition and the expectation of getting back there."

He is correct. We want and expect a winner at Colorado, and historically we have had one. So far he the largest exception in history as a head coach. So yeah, he deserves all the crap he is getting.

hawkins is statistically the worst coach in the long the history of CU football over a 4 year span. so, no, there is nothing he can say that i will like, unless it is "i realize i suck and i stole your money, CU, and therefore, i resign and i don't want a severance." that might change my opinion.

no offense to the player named below but insert the name of any NON-B12 player that litters our roster right now:

Derrick is a high motor player," Collins said. "You look at Derrick and he doesn't look like your average Big 12 football player but he is playing hard and fast for us so we feel very good about what he is doing."

how can this not piss someone off? we used to be 2 deep or better with guys who could play anywhere. now, we don't even have starting lineups on either side of the ball where more than a handful could play major ball anywhere else.

how many Buffs were at the combine this year, again? oh yeah. none.

so, yeah, every time mr. "we know how to do this deal" and "10 wins and no excuses" opens his pie-hole, i get pissed.

sorry. maybe a miracle will happen and he'll shock the world. i'd be just about the happiest guy around if i were proved wrong.

All I'm trying to say is, if you weigh the good and the bad of all the bashing, what is the benefit? All we can do now is wait and see. Maybe you guys are right. I'm not convinced one way or the other yet.

I say no quarter to the douche...he dug the hole...let him crawl out by winning a few games

The stats tell you all you need to know. This team is poorly coached. If Hawk is able to get this team to a bowl game would be a miracle. Seriously. If he can get us to the weedwacker bowl, he should be coach of the year. That's how bad things are in Boulder.

DOOOOM. :)

Last year somebody did a satire of a Hawk interview transcript. Was it Buffnut99 maybe? Does anybody remember that thread? Pure genius.

Quoting myself 'cause I found the referenced satire:

Q: "What are you thoughts on the play at quarterback?"

A: "Well, there's always going to be a little of "Well, he didn't make that throw" or "He ran backwards 20 yards to get sacked for a safety" but you try to look at the whole thing and say "Here's what the numbers say." When you have some young guys, there's obviously going to be some trial by fire and even though teams are extremely talented and well coached, that doesn’t mean that you can’t be in the same arena and the opportunity to win a football game. Then you look around after three years and say "Well how come we're still lining up to do this when we should be lining up to do that." So there's always going to be some of that."

Q: "How do you cope with CU losses?"

A: "I think you kind of start with some different things, you end up getting smashed a little bit and you work out those things in there. You just go, "Well what can I drink?" and you kind of look around and see some different things, like beer or grain alcohol, and you go, "Ok, well do I have some wine too?" So there's that side too. All that stuff just kind of starts to seep in there. You just have to mix it up."

Q: "So you're pretty numb by the end of games?"

A: "Well, and you know what? That's awesome. That's where you want to be. You look around and you go, "Guess what, that's part of the whole deal, right there."

Q: "Can your wife stand you during CU games?"

A: "Well, she is so saintly that I don't ever think that she is going to say anything bad. But you get in there and you start to watch the whole thing unfold and you see things start to get out of hand a little, and you go "****" or "****" and maybe you start throwing things around a little. So then maybe you have a couple of gashers go against you and you go, "Ok, what can I throw now that I haven't already smashed." Then your wife comes in and goes, "Why is the coach still playing his son?" and you don't have an answer so you start to crack right there."

I really don't think the CU administration cares right now. Once the stadium becomes half empty, and contributions dry up he will be gone. In 1981, Fairbanks last game at Folsom - which he ironically won - the attendence was just short of 24,000. I don't think it's going to get that bad with a 4 or 5 win season. I think he could be back in 2011.

CU didn't fire Fairbanks.

You honestly think they don't care? Honestly? Now, maybe they are not a "win at all costs" admin, like, say, Texas, but I do think they care.

I think it's a very low priority for them right now. Lower than I would like it to be.

I would definitely like to see them lossen up recruiting rules and that sort of thing. But, honestly, Bensen really has his work cut out for himself with university funding. But if winning were not an issue, McConnell-Miller would not have been fired. I think they've got Hawkins on a VERY short leash. I'd say that at the A.D. level, there is a high amount of pressure to win. Other evidence is the baskeball/volleyball facility. Bzdelic told them he would be gone if they didn't build it. They are building it.

10 wins, no excuses. Except for when we lose 3 of the first 4, then start with the little excuses. After losing a few more games, find new excuses.

Hawkins is so full of crap it has become funny.

I don't expect this team to win more than 3 games this year. I do expect Juicebox to have a long list of excuses for why the team did not win more games. None of the reasons will include Juicebox being a horrible coach.

What constitutes winning though? It's a pretty broad term, something the AD likes to throw around. I was honestly where you are last season, I figured 5 or 6 wins meant Hawk would be back, but anything beyond that, I mean they had to fire him right? They saw the CSU and Toledo games? But nope, they somehow decided to keep him around after a god awful season that was god awful for no apparent reason. At least the year before, the injuries were at an absurd level, the team was young, but last season what the hell? We were still semi young, but really can you play the young card two seasons in a row? It's not like being young precludes teams from doing well anyway.
