I’m not adverse to dialogue with fan sites; we credential two now because they’ve adhered to our policy of no anonymous postings.

Wonder who they credentialed?

and what are "anonymous postings"? NetBuffs in 99 when i used to post under about 12 different handles--most notably "Dick Tharp's Awesome Everything"? or a yahoo.com email?

Rivals has been credentialed for some time, because everyone has to (in theory) post under their real names -- at least as referenced on their fan page.
I don't know who the second site could be, if the posters are not anonymous. Scout's in a weird spot because Ringo writes for the Camera, and is credentialed for that reason, but also is the publisher or whatever they call it of the Scout Ralphie's Den board. But I don't think that board itself is credentialed, and the Buffzone forums (after each article) are worthless --- just one guy posting to himself and a couple of anti-buffs coming on to try to rile him up most of the time. And those aren't real names either, judging by their handles.
Negbuffs -- can't be that board.

So who IS the second board they've credentialed?

I'm thinking Ralphie Report. At least the guys who run that site are named right?

I think it's Rivals and Scout. When I was a member of Scout, I recall them taking some additional ID verification steps, which I presume was a move toward getting their media cred. They also eliminated some of the free boards for that reason too.

If it is Rivals and Scout, I dunno about this policy requiring all commenters to be officially named. I mean, as Plati says in the article, newspapers sure as hell don't give a **** about who the commenters are. Why not grant media access to sites who make the "reporting poster" etc named? Thats no different than newspapers these days. Hell, not to mention I'm sure RR etc get a pretty significant # of hits.

It's not Scout. (you can see the current posters here --- not real names.)

But Ralphie Report was trying to get credentialed. I know that one of the founders of Ralphie Report started posting with a first/last name recently ... not a nickname ... so it could be them.
Thing is, the place is a ghost town lately... I think they got jobs and it was interferring with their ability to keep the board active.

As to Scout, maybe since SCOUT knows who they really are, maybe that is good enough for CU?

As to RR - Agreed. They've gone quiet, especially since the end of the season. However, would be interesting to see if an allbuffer or 2 tried to get certified.

It is scout and rivals that they have credentialed both require you to use your real name to pay so they have it on record, that is what the AD wants, for the site to have access to actual identities of all the users. One can post under screen names but those have to be attributed to a real person and turned over to the ad. RR is now part of sports nation who may also be credentialed on the national level, as they aggregate for numerous schools and CBS now.

You can use a handle, but Scout does verification steps. The "forum list" used to be twice as long, but they eliminated several boards which I think was for credentialing purposes. Could be wrong, but someone else will know I'm sure.

IMHO, Ralphie Report is brass tacks info only. They don't post fluff, so it goes dead when there's no news.

Sooo these "internet fan sites" are more regulated and give the AD more information than the traditional media?

Yes, Dan Hawkins showed up at my house and told me I needed to clean up the little things in my posts.

1. I was talking about Rivals/Scout in that sentence.
2. Whats stopping you from posting that as a comment on Buffzone/Denver post? As Plati noted, often the community does better policing then the newspapers.

Rightly or wrongly the AD and many others draw a distinct line between the online comment sections in traditional media and things like fan forums.

No. I disagree. The AD does not require that real person's information is turned over because somebody posts on Scout and Rivals.
Rivals requires your "real name" to be shown on your profile. Scout does not. But there is no disclaimer about releasing names from credit cards (how else would they get the "real name") over to the college of which you are a fan.
And geez, if they did that, they would need a whole department to sit around reading the boards and checking names against one another ... for what? So they know who is being nasty on a certain day? Waste of time, IYAM.

They don't need it turned over just because someone posts nor do they sit around and read message boards all day (I hope). What they want is the assurance that if a serious situation comes up that they can "get" to the person behind what ever liable/slander/NCAA rules infraction comes up. Thus they make the requirement upfront so if an the issue occurs they know they can resolve it.

If that's true, it has the potential for hilarious unintended consequences.

Example: One of my kids was visiting grandma a couple summers ago when he wanted to show her a premium story about a friend of his and grandma bought a 30-day membership. Since then, a couple years back, she has renewed it as a gift annually. (She is just delighted to have some idea of what to give him every year, I think the other grandkids get magazine subscriptions or I-Tunes gift cards.)

But I don't think she has any clue where the site is, or knows the password or even the username. If my kid ever posted something so interesting that it came to the attention of the authorities they'd crack down on a bewildered 80+ year old lady living on the West Coast in a retirement community.

I don't think he posts - not sure he even reads the site anymore after that visit since he doesn't follow sports that much - but in this case, the person with the handle and access is not the person associated with the account.

Anyone else find this little Plati nugget interesting? Hmm...

"and the last time CU hired a football and basketball coach for the same athletic year was for the 1935-36 season, when Bunnie Oakes took over the football team and Frosty Cox the men's hoopsters."

I liked the way Plati slapped Henderson-the-cornhole down. How does the Post support that viewpoint? baffling.....

It would be an interesting exercise for the AD to match up their donors with Rivals subscriptions. I know a few of the big ones who have accounts. They aren't active posters, but they are active readers anyhow. I think they might be surprised.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that's going to be happening for the 2010-2011 season, either.... :sad1:

What Abs is saying about the requirements the AD puts on Rivals and Scout is my understanding of the way it works as well. Don't know about Scout in particular, but with Rivals you have to give them a "real" name that can be seen in your profile. If somebody goes off the reservation, the AD feels it needs to have that information available to protect themselves. Any site that won't have that information available doesn't get credentialed.

I think it is a hoot that there is an admission they read these sites. I agree they need to police the rumor mill, as unfounded rumors are bad, I suspect they are out there wringing their hands over opinions more than anything else. I give you the "no more than 200 people wearing blue" comment as exhibit one. I was there, the number of blue shirts was WAY over that number.

I like Plati, and it has got to be a bear to do his job now, with Hawk in charge, but there are times where the party line for the AD looks ridiculous....

I am also in the process of meeting with one of the fairly solid fan sites we have out there to see what what common ground we can agree to that might lead to more coverage from that particular medium--a true fan site (meaning an original, not one of the national sponsored chains). Fan sites aren't much of a threat to team sites, but as one media member once told me, "it's a good thing teams don't credential those, they're a huge threat to us."
I can't believe anyone hasn't mentioned this nugget from Plati. Which fan site (non-national chain)? Has the Junta been holding closed door meetings?:smile2:

some of the fan sites do a much better job than the newspapers or TV station websites in pulling down false rumors, insults and racist comments.
I think these things are policed around here pretty well....well, maybe the first and last ones.:smile2:

If i had to wager it will be MontanaBuff and his blog CUatthegame, easily one of the best Buff fan sites.

As a bit of a tangent, in case you did not know, you can definitely be pursued legally for things that you say online. That, most people know. One thing that I just learned and did not know is that you can get "libel insurance" to the tune of 2-3 bucks every month from the same people you get your home insurance from. That way, you can say whatever you want and be covered if you get sued.

If so, I would actually laugh out loud. Montana Buff was wearing powder blue from head to toe at the A&M game last year.
