Not sure this is worth it's own thread. If not feel free to put in the 'Pac 16' one ...

Larry Scott: We're trying to find what is optimal for us in terms in having the right fit and, as I look across the college landscape, I already see the Pac-10, more than any other conference, of having everything in order in terms of geography, economics and rivalries. The schools are all within four states with two natural rivals in five markets. That connection is very powerful in college, where emotional rivalries matter. That's one of the reasons why there haven't been many changes in the Pac-10. It's a conference that's been well laid out.

Now going forward, we're looking at the value of adding two teams, since that is a requirement by the NCAA in order to have a league championship game. We've been analyzing all of our TV possibilities and having a title game is regarded as a high priority. We're looking to do everything that we can to maximize revenue and exposure for the conference. We're going to try to ascertain whether the addition of even more teams would add value to our current member institutions.

If there were 16 teams could csu & CU be headed west ? Sure seems like Scott loves the rivalries.

If the Pac decided to go to 16 and kept the paired rivalry model, I actually think that would be pretty cool.

Give me CU-CSU. Give me UU-BYU. Give me UNLV-UNR.

Go with a "zipper" conference configuration like this:

Pacific
Washington
Oregon State
Stanford
UCLA
Arizona State
UNLV
Utah
Colorado

West
Washington State
Oregon
Cal
USC
Arizona
Nevada
BYU
Colorado State

Then, make the Thanksgiving week games the paired rival for each team (USC-UCLA, CU-CSU, etc.). I would absolutely love this. I'd be shocked if it happened, though, because I don't think it brings in the same revenue that you get by not doubling up. I guess we'll see. It's an intriguing thought, though.

Problem is..he loves rivalries..but he also loves maximizing revenue. grabbing 2 schools from a close/similar media market will not do that. While In-state rivalries are great..cross border rivalries are also fun.

Why the 'zipper' ? Splitting rivals ? What if csu & CU were in the same division and that game meant winning it and the right to play in the Pac 16 Championship ? Much better than splitting rivals.
I don't see UNLV & UNR adding much to an expanded Pac 10. How about New Mexico & UNLV or New Mexico & Tex Tech ?

My divisions-

CU
csu
Utah
BYU
ASU
AZ
NM
UNLV or Tex Tech

USC
UCLA
Cal
Stanford
Oregon
OSU
Wash
Wash St

I wish they'd get on with it already. This is dragging out too long. Too much wild speculation and no action.

The zipper format with 16 teams is very appealing IMO. You play your 'rival' every year, plus the rest of your teams in your division (7+1). It also divides the TV coverage and provides balance. I agree about including New Mexico (mid-size TV and good basketball). I would rather have Air Force instead of CSU. Air Force provides a national following and prestige. Here are my divisions (North/South determined by the relationship to the rival school, i.e. Colorado is north of AFA, etc):

North
UCLA
Colorado
Arizona St
California
Oregon St
Washington
Utah
UNLV

South
USC
Air Force
Arizona
Stanford
Oregon
Washington St
BYU
New Mexico

Good point about the AFA. Remember, the service academies are the most prestigious public universities in the nation, way ahead of the public ivy's like Cal and North Carolina. Will the Falcons compete for conference titles? Not likely. But adding them would bolster the conference scholastically.

I would love to see the USAFA included in a super-sized Pac-10. Much more deserving than the lambs.

Count me in the camp that would much rather see AFA in the Pac 16 than CSU.

I also really like the zipper system since you play you rival every year and you set up the possibility that rivals will meet for the conference championship. Can you imagine USC v UCLA, or CU v AFA for the Pac 16 title...that would be awesome.

The BIG downside however is there are 7 teams in your conference that you will never play unless you meet in the CCG. CU would only play USC, Cal, or Oregon if the stars aligned and we meet in the title game - that would suck balls IMO.

Valid point. I wonder if a 9-game conference schedule would work. 7 division, 1 rival, 1 rotating cross-divisional (see the other six teams once every six years).

this is a bit of a debatable statement. the AFA or Annapolis are designed to produce certain kinds of graduates for careers in the military, aviators, engineers, or in some cases the making of policy at guv administration levels. if want a PhD in Psychology or whatever or a law degree, I'm much better off at Cal than AFA. it's a bit apples and oranges to me. "prestige" means different things to different people. university rankings are mirrors of the criteria they are designed to assess....which is to say, the answers you get are determined in advance by the questions you ask...and with the service academies there's a qualitatively different "end" in mind for the purpose of "education".

i would, however, like to see AFA in an expansion more than CSU.

I actually think the 9 game conference schedule puts the Pac 10 at a competetive disadvantage over the other BCS conferences. They only get to schedule 3 non-con cupcakes while everyone else can schedule 4.

In the Pac 16 scenario it still takes 12 years to play every team in the conference home and home. Would it affect recruiting? Think about this... a blue chip stud from SoCal is deciding between Stanford and CU. Harbaugh tells the kid "Stanford plays at USC next year, but CU won't play there for 6 years." Maybe a bit of a stretch, but the oddball scheduling is a big reason I'd much prefer 12-14 team conferences. 16 is a clusterf**k.

Meh. That's where the zipper comes into play. CU would play UCLA every year. I suppose if a kid really wanted to play USC that bad it would hurt us, but as far as proximity to home it might not be too bad. Agreed on the cluster comment. Darned if you do, darned if you don't.

No matter what happens with expansion, I'd just love it if we could change the "Rocky Mountain Showdown" from CU-CSU to CU-AFA. Damn you Bohn, for signing that stupid contract!:pissed:
