Interesting article and I actually agree they need to try something new, although I am not sure there should be too much zone defense played with our returning starters at CB. I actually think the biggest issue with our defense under Collins has been the blitz packages. It seems like the blitz packages we employ are simplistic and not very well disguised, allowing opposing offenses to wreak havoc on our secondary in one-on-one situations.

The most sobering part of the article for me was the following:

It will be important for the duo to remain healthy because there is not a lot of experienced depth behind them. Sophomore Vince Ewing emerged from spring ball as Perkins` backup. Ewing wasn`t on the field for a single defensive snap in 2009.

Arthur Jaffee is the second-team free safety going into fall camp. Jaffee has bounced between running back and cornerback previously in his career.
I really like our starters, but the depth is scary (in a bad way). Thoughts?

I agree, it seems we do the same blitz looks all the time and from the same place. Im a fan of mixing up blitzes and coverages behind it. I even like combo looks, maning up one guy and zoning the rest.

Collins has not impressed me at all. I wonder if the mid-season (post Toledo debacle) improvement in the D was a result of Cabral and Brown as others have suggested. of course, now Brown is gone, so Collins still runs the show, which doesn't excite me. He's a WAC DC if I've ever seen one....

I have been curious as to the impact of Greg Brown leaving. According to Pissbomber, Brown was running the Defense after the Toledo game. The problems are a combination, no pressure on the passer so regardless of the coverage you have open receivers. I really don't care if you run man or zone - if you give them too much time someone will be open.

(Insert Sacky rant about defense against Mizzou here)

Yep. The secondary remains a dependent area of the defense, so the front seven needs to be better at generating a pass rush.

Well that depressing depth should put to bed those people suggesting Polk should be moved back to RB.

in addition to the predictability of our blitz packages, they seem unbelievably slow to develop, esp off the corner. QB (Gabbert comes to mind) see that coming from a mile away and light us up or make the right read and convert on 3rd down.

I agree about the blitz packages. Always seems like we run 5-6 guys and nobody get close to the qb. What's up with olatoye?

Regarding our depth, I agree it's scary. If something happened to Perkins or Polk long-term, we'd pretty much have to play Jalil at Safety and start Hawkins or a freshman at Corner. That is, unless Terrel Smith comes in ready to play. Some good news on Anthony Wright's rehab would be a huge deal, too.

if donmac wasn't blowing smoke up our ass (which i doubt) then terrel sounds like he is coming in to play right away and knock some heads off.

I thought Parker Orms was going to play safety? Any word on that?

He is. But he's starting at our nickel DB position as Chap's replacement. If you have to move Orms out of there so he can play FS or SS, it creates a whole other set of position shifts.

There seems to be some young "talent" behind the starting safeties, but they lack playing time. Scary no matter how ya look at it.

It seems that the db's should be getting better work since the wr's are more talented than in previous years. The corners and safeties should benefit from working against the Buff's wideouts.

From what I remember, we rarely do anything more than just a rush. No delayed blitzes or stunts/twists with a delayed blitz or full on rush. It's depressing.

I don't know how many times last year I saw the opposing QBs line up only to hard-count at the LOS to see who was rushing or not. Then our guys would get beat. No adjustments would be made by our D if they found out our plan and rarely did we ever fake a pass rush.

I also loved how we had one of our best DBs last year blitz by going all of the way around. Took too much time, even though Chap was fast, he wasn't that fast. Stupid.

Our safeties struggled last year, they should have been the one rushing more often, imo, not one of our top CBs.

That would be nice, but it's not a good thing to have to count on a freshman to come in and play corner, probably the hardest position besides QB to play. Even if the guy has a ton of skill, its usually rare that it translates to alot on the field before his second year at that position.

What happened to Sandersfield?

He's backing up Perkins. He was a bit "dinged" during the spring, but he'll be in the mix. Mostly, though, he's a special teams stud for us. He's a guy that can contribute on defense but probably isn't a Big 12 caliber Safety. Interestingly, Jaffee has now moved to Safety from Corner. He's definitely got the athleticism to excel back there and help our depth. He looked great on kickoff returns for us last year and, fwiw, I've heard from several people who follow local HS sports that Jaffee was much tougher and at least as good of an athlete as Kenny Bell was for Fairview.

I actually think we are just fine at the two safety spots. With Perkins being a JR, Polk and Ewing both SOs, and Parker Orms and Terrel Smith being FR that is plenty of talent spread across 3 (maybe 4) classes. Throw in Sandersfeld and Jaffee who are JRs that have played significant special teams coverage and at least one season practicing as DB and I am not so worried about the two safety spots.

Corner is another story however. We are rolling the dice this year that Jimmy and Jalil stay healthy all season; and we are rolling the dice in the future that Deji Olatoye, Paul Vigo, Josh Moten, and Jered Bell ALL turn into quality players within a year. The JR class of CB's: Hawkins and Wright have to really prove themselves this season in reserves role to give me any confidence for next season.

And 100% agreed with everyone's take on the blitz packages. With us using a "multiple" front, there should be no reason we can't run more effective zone blitzes with the LB corps we have.
