New ESPN take on expansion

Listening to the Scott Van Pelt show on ESPN radio today, their lead story was Big Ten expansion. While he and his partner were purely speculating, they offered up a few interesting nuggets:

-The next few schools in line, if any of the original four decline, may be Maryland and Vanderbilt, because of academics. This is much different than what we've been hearing all along... Syracuse, Pitt, UConn, etc.

-Some conferences may look to boot existing members as they expand. They specifically called out South Carolina and Vanderbilt from the SEC. This would really make things interesting. Personally, I'd have to think Wazzu and Baylor would be in jeopardy... and from the hoops-only side DePaul, Providence, St. Johns, Seton Hall.

-Mentioned how Mizzou's hoops rivalry with KU would need to be kept in the non-conference. C'mon, is this really a rivalry? Mizzou might win once every 10-12 years. Football is more competetive, but both schools blow historically.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh Urbana... KU/MU not a rivalry? Man, their whole feud goes back to Bloody Kansas and the Civil War. Both the nicknames Jayhawks and Tigers come from the Civil War time. It's the also the oldest continually-played series west of the Mississippi. The world would end before the Border War would be.

As for the other stuff you mentioned... Interesting. Vandy is a charter member of the SEC and that would be a shame if the SEC did that. Plus, there are sunshine law advantages in having a private school in your conference membership. I just can't see Vandy getting the boot. And I definitely couldn't see Vandy defect to a Yankee league. No chance in hell there. I'm sure they were just spitballin' and tryin' to read the tea leaves, but in this whole deal I don't see ANY school currently in a BCS league getting the boot. I see conferences (Big 12) getting pilfered and collapsing, but I don't see the Pac-10 booting Wazzu, the Big 12 booting Baylor, etc. etc.

Whatever moves happen will be addition only. People need to understand the long-standing ties amongst the schools in the leagues rumored to expand. It just won't happen.

KU-MU is one of the fiercest, if underrated, rivalries in sports. those people HATE each other. goes back to the Civil War when Bill Quantrill burned Lawrence to the ground. both teams nicknames are in reference to Civil War doings with respect to the other.

I don't know why, but this threads turn reminds me of this movie:

"You're a real bushhog, aintcha Mr. Josey Wales?"

I get the historical rivalry among the people, I was merely commenting on the sports angle. Mizzou will never even sniff KU's jockstrap in hoops. In football, their only meaningful game on a national scale was in '07 when both were in the Top 10. I'm just arguing Van Pelt's assertion that it was one of the best rivalries. I can think of many others that I'd rank higher... namely OSU/UM, Bama/Auburn, Army/Navy, USC/ND, Texas/OU, et al.

As a great academic and private school, Vandy gets its pool of students from all over the place. Does anyone in the Nashville market actually watch them? Not a big TV grab if Big Ten were to do this.

:yeahthat:

And where the hell did Maryland suddenly come from? That one doesn't make much sense unless they're targeting some of the Baltimore/DC market.

No one in Nashville cares much about Vandy sports to be honest.

ESPN College Football live is reporting same 4 schools to Big X: Rutgers, ND, Mizz, and Corn. AD's meet next week in Chicago, then Presidents and Chancellors meet in a month, also in Chicago. Big X expansion (or not) should be wrapped up by then. If all go, they mentioned that it might force Texas and A&M to go SEC and Colorado to PAC 10. No other schools mentioned.

Also, looks like USC / Reggie Bush investigation is drawing to a close. Flavor of the report was that they would lose some ships, maybe vacate some prior wins in 2005, but post season suspension or loss of TV are unlikely. Too much money involved to hit USC hard, according to them.

Finally, I learned that Brock Huard is orange and has a mis-shapened head.

Taking everything into consideration (academics, large/public flagship school, athletics), Maryland would be a better fit than any of the other schools mentioned, including ND. That said, would they leave the ACC, in particular its rivalries with Duke, UVA, etc? Considering that the ACC may get raided in due time anyways, I would imagine that all allegiances are on shaky ground these days.

Why would the Big Televen expand by 4 teams? That would put them at 15... Seems to me they may have offered 4 schools, with the idea that 3 will accept (probably as insurance against the fact that ND is very likely to decline). Either that or they would add one more if all four accepted...

The Big 10 is not going to extend an offer to ND to join, the Irish will have to approach the Big 10 first.

Maryland is a basketball school. You don't hear **** about the football program round here. DC and B'more are pro-football towns to boot. If they get invited to the Big 10, it is not because of football.

Heard someone speculate that adding Vandy would be a match for N-western in terms of academics, status, etc.

Prolly cuz the b10 has offered before and sorta lame turned 'em down. b10 doesn't wanna be embarrassed again.

I think the B10 can go to ND and say "this is it. You're either in or out. There will be no more offers." If it's put to them that way, and seeing how the landscape of college football is changing rapidly, I think the domers make the move. I think ND always had it in the back of their mind that the B10 needed at least one more team for the championship game, and that they were the B10's first choice. Now it's not so certain that they are the B10's first choice, so I personally think they'll be more amenable to the move now than they might have been in the past.

As long as ND has the NBC contract for football, the BCS will give them an automatic bid if they finish in the top 10, and all their other sports have a conference to play in, ND is not going anywhere.

ND gets as much or more $ from NBC than they would get from anyone else. They don't have to share a nickle of revenue with anyone.

Unless the Big East falls apart forcing ND to find a conference for all the non football sports, ND will not move anywhere.

Yup, that's exactly why the Big 10 won't offer them unless they know that ND will accept.

This is actually incorrect. The Domers stand to make more money with the Big Ten TV contract than with NBC. Sure, having your own deal sounds prestigious. And it was lucrative in the 90s, but not as much anymore. Further, if the Big East is raided by the Big Ten and ACC, then ND might find their non-revenue sports playing in a rag-tag conference that rivals the A-10.

They would increase their TV revenues by about $4 to 6 million, their bowl revenues by $1 to 2 million (in a non-BCS year).

The downside would be having to share gate receipts for conference games. It is estimated that ND takes in $20 to $30 million from the live gate, for 7 home games that would be $3 to $4 million per game. For 4 home games that is $12 to $16 million, and if they have to share that (not sure if it is "equal" with conference members or a %) then that could cost them just as much of a "loss" as they gain from the other advantages. The effect would be lessened when playing the top drawing teams in the Big Ten, but not when they play Minnesota, Purdue, Illinois, Northwestern, or Indiana.
