Big 8 Brothers Should Unite

I wish our Big 8 brothers would all stand up and just push out the stupid Texas schools and adopt 4 other schools. With the core of 8 schools we'll still be a BCS conference and if we are competitive with one another we'll create viable chances for all the schools to have a shot at the NC and good TV deals. Look at the old Big 8, games were televised on ABC and ESPN regularly.

Add TCU, Utah, BYU (who brings a large viewing base), and Houston or Boise. Screw the main Texas schools they bailed on their old SWC and now they threaten to bail the Big 12. I figure they should just be kicked out and we should just build from there.

...I know that's a total dream situation but it would be pretty nice.

Ehhh, if we cant just join the pac10 with Utah, then I would almost prefer us just doing an 8 team conference of Wyoming, CU, CSU, AFA, NM, Utah, BYU, and Boise. That would free us up 5 games for OOC and once Hawkins gets the boot we could probably dominate our conference. The cherry on top would be that our TV contract would probably make it so that all our games are shown locally.

I know it doesnt sound good at first but we would be free of Texas and could develop some great regional rivalries too. And believe it or not, we would probably have a pretty strong conference in terms of winning too. Utah basically won a national championship two years ago, while BYU and BSU have been consistently ranked in the top 25. AFA is capable of being ranked as is CSU even though CSU/Wyoming/NM would probably be the whipping boys for the near future.

I would rather have this than stay in the Big12. Pac10 would be better but if it gets taken over by Texas, I would rather not.

Hey, I am just saying that that up there is probably worst case scenario for CU and to me, that isn't the end of the world. It is actually a bit better than where we are at right now. I still would prefer to be in the Pac12 first, Pac16 second only because it pays so well even though it kinda sucks, the 8 team mountain conference would be my 3rd choice and then staying in the BigTex er 12 would be my least favorite.

The only worries I would have with the conference I created above is would we be in the BCS and would be be able to schedule the top teams during OOC games? If it weren't for the money I could care less about BCS as it doesn't mean anything anyway.

It would be an okay option if our athletic dept had money, had good facilities and had a clue. None of that is in place as of right now. We need all that money from the Pac 16 to get a start at jump starting our program again when the next guys take over.

This defeatist attitude that some fans and apparently the Colorado Media (Thanks Kizla and Ringo) is bull****! I can't believe that people are even thinking about joining the Mountain West when we still don't know for certain if the Big XII will break up and CU still has a legit shot to go to the Pac 10. Nobody cares if you win a ton of games against ****ty teams!!! - Just ask Boise State and Utah. Not to mention the hit CU would take to the academic prestige by going to the MWC over the Pac 10. What the hell is the point in even playing the games if you are not going up against the best competition? I like the fact that CU schedules tough out of conference opponents more times than not like USC, Miami, Georgia, Cal, Florida State, etc, etc -- If CU gets passed up over Baylor than fine I'll deal with it then but lets not add fuel to their fire by saying the Mountain West might be okay.

I agree. The MWC is the Motel6 of athletic conferences.
There are more desireable places to stay.

Most of the North would likely okay a move to kick out the 4 South schools and replace them with Utah, BYU, etc. Unfortunately, OU has gone to the dark side and OSU is on the coattails. Plus, the balance of the Big XII offices now lean heavily towards Austin. So though we called the shots at one time, this is no longer so. It would require a coup d'etat to overthrow the new power regime.

If the Pac had just done what it supposedly wanted to do in the first place, which was invite UU and CU, none of us would be having this conversation. Texas is a virus. They get involved in stuff and drama ensues.

IF that happens (I don't think it will) then I would expect OU & OSU to first try to get into the SEC, and if that failed, then I would expect them to try to latch onto the remaining Big 12 teams to try and get on with the Pac-____.

OU / OSU are not going to voluntarily leave Texas. The only way they would leave Texas would be if Texas accepted an invite to a conference OU/OSU weren't invited to. If OU/OSU are invited to the same conference Texas is invited to - they are going to follow Texas, for sure.

OU/OSU know that Texas is a cash cow and they don't have any problems following them. I am sure OU/OSU's nightmare scenario would be for Texas to get invited to a conference that they are not also invited to.

It's just too bad that the Big 8 didn't have the foresight to invite Utah, BYU, Texas and Texas A&M with the original expansion. Then gone with a zippered conference alignment to balance the North and South. North could have been Utah, CU, Nebraska, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and Kansas State. South could have been BYU, Iowa State, Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. Each would have had an annual game against a cross-division rival to start the season and an in-division rival for Thanksgiving week (CU would have drawn ISU and Nebraska).

But we can't go backward. And there's no way the original Big 8 would separate from all the money the State of Texas brings to the party.

I've heard a few times that the original invite was indeed UT & A&M but the Texas legislature forced either the inclusion of Tech & BU or the refusal of the offer.

It was. But the original plan was also to only go to 10. Big 8 should have snagged UU and BYU first, then approached UT and TAMU.

How many teams in the MWC would give up the opportunity to move to the Big XII or Pac-___ if offered???

Case closed...

For Nebraska, this is about the Academic Standing and probable Research money the University would receive from the B10 as much as it is the boon to the Athletic Dept bottom line.

NU is happy in the B12 and the league revenue sharing benefits them. This is about an opportunity too good to pass on, contrary to what Texas has been leaking.
