Recruiting for CU and the Pac10 move

Will the move to the Pac10 have an immediate impact for Colorado, considering Hawkins is still aboard?

Or will it take some time for lots of top tier recruits to come in and make a commit to the Buffalo program knowing they will compete in the Pac10 against the likes of USC, UCLA, Oregon and etc.?

Any thoughts?

It opens doors, for sure, but that won't fix the problems we are currently seeing with the team.

CU has to recruit on a mix of CA/CO and a bit of national players to do well. If we had made this move when CU was a great team we would have killed it in CA, the USC sanctions could be a boon for us, but with uncertainty at HC who knows. The other potential issue here is how many games are going to be played in NorCal/SoCal? That's why I'd love to be able to have just 12 teams so we can recruit Cali better.

I think a lot depends on how this season goes. Also, a lot depends on whether or not the other Big XII south schools join for a couple of reasons. If they do, our Texas recruiting should be helped because we will have more presence in Texas than we do now. If they don't, we will be playiing more games in Cal, so that would improve. Anyway, those are my gut feelings, which are never right. But the biggest thing is that this move has raised our credibility and will increase our finances.

It completely depends on how proactive coach Hawkins wants to be. If he acts like a lame duck, he might give 2011 recruiting less than his best effort.

But if he takes an aggressive approach, he has an opportunity to exploit the media exposure and sell the benefits of CU's Pac?? birth.

Kids who are being recruited by KU/KSU/MIZZOU/ISU and Baylor have something to think about. But CU hasn't exactly been in many recruiting battles with those schools.

Once the pieces fall into place regading teams and division/pod structure, the sales pitch can be refined.

The short term opportunity is with USC. The longer term opportunities will get sorted out soon enough.

I do not think that Dan Hawkins considers himself a lame duck. He figures, and perhaps correctly, that this season --- if he does well -- will buy him another year at the least.
