Mike Leach for CU coach in 2011*

I strongly believe that the Pac-16 is going to happen and if that happens, CU will be placed in a warm weather division which means CU will have to move away from what the Buffs have done best for many years: run the football. Why run the football when you can throw the ball around?

That brings us to Mike Leach who is out of a job and suing the heck out of Texas Tech. I don't think it would be a big deal to tick off TT by hiring Leach because TT knows that they are in the Pac mainly due to UT bringing them along.

We are aware of the cons surrounding Leach and those are coming out of the media which you cannot put all your trust in the media especially after what happened with Gary Barnett.

The pros would be that Leach is familar with the South schools and his style of football would be effective with the Arizona schools. Texas recruits for the next 10 years will remember his name from his work at TT. California and Arizona kids would definetly be interested in playing for Leach.

I'd love to see DH succeed for the Buffs but Leach as his replacement would be awesome in my opinion.

Leach is one of the most overrated coaches in the country, imo. No more pass-happy offenses. RUN THE BALL! I really think that it is good to have a contrarian type offense from everyone else. The spread option was harder to defend in the B12 when only OU and TT ran it. now, about 8 teams try to run some version of it and people recruit to stop it and practice against it constantly.

I really want them to look at Niumatolaloloalo (could be misspelled) from Navy, and reintroduce the option.

No thanks. Leach would effectively kill any positive momentum we have right now from the Boulder community, faculty and administration. The media would have a field day with it. CU can get a much better high quality coach and they don't have to shell out 5 mil to do it. My top picks not in any certain order would be Norm Chow, Dick Venerables, Eric Bienemy,Terry Bowden, or Larry Coker. Any of these guys would be way better

Norm Chow can't get UCLA to score 14 points a game. Bowden and Coker are damaged goods and I'm not a fan of Venables.

eric bieniemy should be leading us into the Pac conference. Talk about a guy who can recruit and bring some damn pride back to the football program.

i don't think EB has done anything that makes him qualified to coach CU. wha? he's the RB coach for Adrian Peterson....really? maybe if EB does some time as OC where he develops an identity as playcaller....but, it's nostalgia now.

not a huge fan of Venables at CU, but no Bowdens. no way.

Troy Calhoun.

Troy Calhoun.

I could live with that choice. However, I think CU is in a better spot today than they were last year as far as being able to attract top tier talent. Maybe in the long run, it will be a blessing that Hawkins wasn't replaced until after next season.

Forgetting the baggage, I like the idea of a guy like Leach. Someone charismatic, innovative, and with BCS-level success on his resume. Also, I could get behind this even more if hiring an offensive guru allowed the coach to bring in Jon Embree as Offensive Coordinator & TE Coach.

Umm we are not always going to be playign in nice weather.

Ever been to Seattle or Eugene in the fall? San Fran can be dreary too. Oh and we still play in our stadium which can have snow and wind.

Leach would be a terrible choice. Please no.

I am on board with bringing Venables in, provided we can shell out some money for an established OC. Getting quality assistants is going to be just as important as the head coach choice. We need to be able to hire established BCS-level coordinators and go from there.

Leach, no. CU is not gonna touch a coach that locked Craig James' boy in a tool shed or whatever it was. The little James comes off as brat that probably deserved it, but Leach will still probably be mired in a lawsuit with Tech if Hawkins gets his pink slip in November. Do you honestly think that CU is gonna hire a guy in a highly publicized lawsuit? Really? I have a better chance of being CU's next HC than Mike Leach; therefore, whether he'd be a good coach or not is totally moot.

I would look at David Gibbs before EB. He's been a defensive coordinator at the college level (Minn & Auburn) and position coaching experience at the pro level (Broncos, Chefs, and Texans). He's a Colorado Alum. He's coached in both Colorado and Texas, which should help with recruiting. He should have also have a solid rolodex to get good assistants. His father Alex of course develped the zone blocking scheme the Broncos used so well during the Terrell Davis days.

I get a chuckle out of people who think running the option is a the solution for CU. Not going to happen, nor should it.

It is fun to talk over these options because I am pretty sure we will need a coach next year - time will tell. Leach will not even get an interview in Boulder let alone be on a list they will discuss. There will not be any obvious baggage with the next coach. By that, no media blown up issues. CU will continue to work this positive image angle and with the move to the Pac, they should be able to get better candidates if CU can convince them there is a committment to building a winner in Boulder.

Bottom line, we should be able to do better than Leach. With the realignment going on, who knows which coaches will be available in 6 months. You may be surprised who we can get.

Signed, Georgia Tech.

Fundamental difference is where you're drawing your recruits from.

Texas prep football has become a spread offense state. A big reason we saw programs like KU, MU, OSU and TTU on the rise in the first decade of the 2000s while NU, CU and KSU went dramatically downhill... is that those programs capitalized on the Texas spread offenses and all the quarterbacks, wide receivers and offensive linemen experienced in that system. Plus, they realized they could look for smaller, quicker Michael Westbrook prototype RBs for that offense (and get them because the traditional powers overlook those guys).

Colorado, increasingly, is also a spread offense state for prep football. Just look at how hard it's getting for us to find an in-state Tight End recruit who comes in knowing how to block. And when we find them (Nate Solder, for example), we're moving them to OT because athleticism of offensive linemen is more at a premium than ever. The Colorado offensive linemen we're recruiting are not the drive blockers of yesteryear, either.

And our other recruiting hotbed, California, is mostly spread even over pro style offenses. It's become nearly impossible to find a quarterback out of California who comes in comfortable with taking a snap from under center and executing a 3-, 5-, or 7-step drop.

Basically, programs that run Option, Power-I or Veer in our region of the country are few and far between. CU is going to be its most successful when it runs the type of system that fits our recruiting region. One thing I've got to give Hawkins credit for is that he has now re-made our roster so that we can run that system. Whether he's the one who sees the payoff from this or not remains to be seen. But CU's roster is now structured exactly as it should be and we're running the correct offense for us.

And anyone thinks they'll win a national championship doing that.

Please. Are you implying the only thing preventing GT from winning the NC is the fact they run the option? I think it has been proven that the option is a viable offense to win a NC. It's like 80's metal, just because it is no longer in vogue, that doesn't mean it is not the best type of music ever composed.
