Here's his recruiting video:

Nick Sherry, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound quarterback from Casa Grande High School in Petaluma, Calif., chose the Buffs after a conversation with coach Dan Hawkins.

"He talked to coach Hawkins and decided that he wanted to make it happen," Case Grande coach Trent Herzog said. "Nick is very excited and we're excited and proud of him."

Sherry earned his offer from Colorado after showing well at one of the Buffaloes' summer camps.

"My camping experience at Colorado was incredible," he said. "I got to see the whole campus and meet all the coaches and everybody was really nice. I liked it a lot. Everything about it was great."

Here's what the resident expert at fvsports had to say about Sherry: QB Nick Sherry, Casa Grande - High 3*, 2nd best QB in NorCal after Boehm and very good arm. Just a pocket QB and from a tiny program but big upside. (Note - Boehm committed to Cal in May.)

Rivals mentioned Sherry as a player who "impressed" at the Berkeley Elite 11 camp in May.

In the Scout update from 3 days ago when Sherry named a top 5 which included CU: Nick went to the Arizona camp last weekend and was named MVP of all the quarterbacks. Arizona really liked him. They are real close to pulling the trigger." (Note - Arizona considered Sherry its backup plan if it didn't strike gold with landing Brett Hundley.)

Here's a sweet 2-point PAT Sherry pulled off last season:

Sherry was a Plan A quarterback prospect for the Buffs in the group with Hundley, Berglund and Rudock. Buffs want 2 this cycle. Since Sherry's a pocket passer like Hirschman, I'm expecting the next QB to be more of a dual-threat QB like Hansen.

Great size: 6'4" puts on 10 lbs and he'll be able to stand in the pocket and take the pressure. Great pickup for the buffs.

That 2 point conversion is straight out of the Brett Favre playbook. Anyway, kid looks solid, good arm and size. I'll take the trade of Foreman for him.

Wake me when we actually get a commit from a player who actually has an offer from a BCS school. Remind me who the last commit was who has such an offer?

I know, I know, everyone of them would've if they had grades, weren't injured, were from a big city, etc etc.

I watched his video on ESPN, and why ESPN decided use that video to display his talent I will never know. They basically have a video on the page showing roughly 12 sequential plays from a game, and 6 of them are Nick handing the ball off. The other six plays consist of 3 incompletes and 3 completions.

The video above really shows the kid has an arm, and a pretty good release (also love his size). If Hirshman works out, then this kid will have plenty of time to develop.

I really like the potential here.

Why don't you keep this crap out of the recruiting forum? This is a big day for this kid and he doesn't need you pissing on it.

At this point in the recruiting process we don't really have any idea who actually did offer, who is considering an offer, and who is waiting a little longer before stepping up with an offer.

For guys who play at smaller schools, schools that haven't had the history of winning championships, or schools who's coaches are not as forceful or as experienced in the process of getting upper level recruits noticed and offered it is still very early to tell how other schools look at or will look at a kid.

I have no illusions about having a great recruiting class this year, Hawk hasn't won in the past four years and if in the high likelyhood that he doesn't make a major turnaround this year he will be gone soon.

At the same time there is no reason to believe that we can't get a number of individual players who will develop into the core of the first teams for our next coach as CU rises back into prominence.

Hey, guys, as Superior mentioned, this is a recruit thread. We try (as much as possible) to keep the thread about the recruit, his teammates, his future and where he'll fit in as a buff.
Commentary on coaching, recruiting in general, etc. should be in a more general thread.

Welcome to the Buffs, Nick.

Fair enough. I welcome Sherry and, to me, he looks like a player.

I must say, however, that just like some people don't want to buy season tickets to send a message, I also think it's important that fans hold the coaches accountable for recruiting. Gushing over every commit makes no sense and sends the wrong message.

I agree. Just that there's a time and a place.

A future college football player will likely last longer than the head coach, no matter where he signs (4-5 years for a player versus under a 4-year average HC tenure in D1A college football). A recruit is committing to so much more than the head coach and he'll be part of our Buff family forever. Even if Hawkins wins the Big 12 this year (or he fails and we end up replacing him with a big name hire), I still want this forum focused on the recruits and how they have chosen to become a Buff.

Next, and some people here will disagree strongly with me, I believe that message boards influence the decisions of recruits and the attitudes of family, friends and high school coaches who are checking things out. I want this particular forum to be a positive force for the University of Colorado. If someone wants to complain or rant about something to do with CU, its coaches, its administrators, or its athletic department(s)... the CU Football forum is an appropriate place for that. If you want to go over the top with it, you can even post it in the Smack Room forum.

Last, I simply hate the idea of a Buff prospect or commitment (or his friends/family) doing a google search on himself, finding the link to his AllBuffs profile, and then reading a thread where people are ripping on him, CU or even the coaches he just committed to play for. The only reason I put so much effort into moderating this forum is because it's something I can do to support CU athletics and, hopefully, make a small positive difference for fans, players or prospects. It's a labor of love. Take that away and I quit.

Now let's get this thread back on topic.

positive: LOTS OF ROOM TO GROW. off caps. this kid has played QB for two years, and one of those was JV. potential out the waaazoooo!

Looks like tons of potential. Natural live arm, quick release with a fairly compact motion but still has strength to throw the deeper ball with some velocity. Doesn't take long to set up and looks like he has the arm strength to make plays even if he can't get his full setup. 6'4" and stands tall in the pocket, he is going to be able to see downfield. In HS plays both under center and in the shotgun, comfortable looking in both. Doesn't look fast but looks comfortable being mobile.

He could very well end up being one of those kids that a lot of schools are asking themselves how they missed.

I saw some mechanical flaws that he'll need to work on. These resulted in some balls floating, inconsistent accuracy, and every ball not looking the same (some spirals, some not). Those are coachables, though. Sherry has a live arm and great size. He was also supposedly a whiz at the blackboard with CU coaches when asked what he was seeing on plays and whatnot. Those are things you either have or you don't and they can't be coached. Give Sherry a few years in the program and I honestly believe we'll have a legit NFL quarterback prospect on our roster in him.

And if we are looking at junior year highlights, that's a 16 year old or young 17 year old you are watching. He's got a senior year ahead of him, too. Lots of room to grow and learn.

Interesting article on Sherry's recruitment in the Petaluma Press Democrat.

It seems that the Montgomery offensive line coach was a teammate of Coach Hawkins at UC-Davis and they also coached together for a year at Sonoma State. Montgomery is the team that beat Sherry's Casa Grande team in the state championship. That was our connection.

Some quotes from the article:

“He's 6-foot-5 and 215 pounds and he's not even fully matured,” [Casa Grande Head Coach] Herzog said. “He hasn't even reached half of his potential. He's totally raw.”

On Monday, Hawkins put Xs and Os on a whiteboard and grilled Sherry on football minutiae.

“I guess they threw some zingers at him,” [Montgomery Coach] Scalercio said. “And he answered all of them.”

Sherry was attracted by CU's coaching staff, its facilities and an opportunity to compete for a starting job early in his college career.

“Me and my mom were looking for flaws,” Sherry said. “And we really couldn't find any.”

I disagree. X's and O's is completely coachable. It's great to read he already has a lot of knowledge, and I hope it translates on the field.

Yes, he has room to improve, as his HS coach even says. While I agree that we shouldn't be ripping on recruits, I don't think you can get rid of honesty. Honesty shouldn't get replaced with fanatical optimism in my opinion. "NFL"...that's assuming quite a bit - he would have to fill in all his potential. Most players do not do that. I'm glad this kid wants to come to CU, and I hope he gets better and better. However, I don't see him supplanting Hirschmann on the depth chart when he arrives on campus.

I reread this post, and I'm not trying to be an ass or anything. I do appreciate all the work you do on this forum, as well as others.

He is a better pickup than Foreman was and can be a decent option at QB in time. The overall QB recruiting under Dan Hawkins still leaves a lot to be desired though.

We're going to have to disagree on Xs and Os being completely coachable. Some guys are just dumb. For some QBs, maybe they've got enough talent that a coach will simplify the passing game so there's 1 read on a play and the QB only has to look at half the field. But that's a major problem unless the guy's an all-world athletic talent. Also, every year we see guys slip down the NFL draft boards based on their inability to understand what's going on with film and play diagrams. If a guy is unable to grasp that stuff, he is going to have trouble every time he transitions into a higher level of competition where the schemes get more complex. Bottom line is that coaching cannot make a guy tall, fast, quick, light on his feet, strong-armed, large-framed, sure-handed or smart.

And I'm all for honesty. Take what I have said about Sherry, for instance. I was very clear that he's a pocket passer. He doesn't bring running ability to the party. That's a negative. I've also said that he's got accuracy problems and is going to need to fix his technique (footwork and throwing motion). Another negative. And you may notice that I haven't said anything about NFL potential for a guy like Berglund. And that's despite the fact that I like Berglund better as a college prospect than I do Sherry. Why I see Sherry as a guy who can develop into an NFL prospect is that he's got prototypical size for the position, he's got a strong arm, and he's got the smarts to handle an NFL playbook. He reminds me a lot of guys like Jim Sorgi who, for example, has played a lot of years in the NFL and had a very nice college career at Wisconsin.

I hope my NFL comment doesn't read as much like hyperbole now that I've explained it. It's certainly assuming quite a bit, but until we've seen him in game action that's about all we can do. And I honestly do want frank discussion and debate as long as there isn't any bad-mouthing of guys and we maintain some excitement and appreciation when someone chooses the Buffs. If someone can't handle that level of discourse about himself, he's not tough enough to make it at this level anyway.

P.S. I also agree that Hirschman is going to be tough to pass on the depth chart. All reports are that he was impressive this spring.

Rivals has a new, detailed interview article with Nick Sherry's coach. Tons of interesting stuff in there about his recruitment process, his development as a player and how CU landed him.

The quote that made me most happy was toward the end:

"And actually after Nick verbally committed to Colorado, Arizona asked, 'Would it make any difference if we offer?' And Nick told them no."

Breaking Down Sherry's Game

I would say there are things you can coach:
- Throwing motion
- Release
- Footwork/Stance
- Pre snap defensive reads
and there are things you can’t coach:
- Speed
- Height
- Athletic ability
- Arm strength
- Intelligence
- Playmaking (i.e. what happens when the play that was called goes to hell)

This kid has 3 years ( 1 high school, red shirt Fr, & Fr) to be coached up before we should expect him to contribute in any fashion, and he has only played the position for 2 years. Granted he is a raw talent with a ton of potential, but I like what he is starting with.
