DL recruiting brings the lulz

Good to know this staff just keeps picking up bodies. Because we all know bodies = quality depth.

say what you will about the staff..but i thought you were one of the people who instituted the no bashing of recruits...and this is direct reaction to the Canadian dl... follow your own rules

It's not in the recruiting forum, bcs, so your point doesn't apply.

And even if it was, BB only made a point about our DLs this cycle all being projects. That's true. Chidera has played football for 2 years and really only lifted weights for one. Kirk is likely moving to DT, where he's never played and needs to add 40+ lbs to pull off. Dakota is a rugby player whose highlight film is against teams that wouldn't make the Colorado 3A playoffs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, BB, but you do agree that these 3 guys all appear to be capable athletes who could develop into very good players, right? That the failure is that a program of CU's stature has failed in recruiting when all 3 of its signees at a position group are projects.

I think that's a valid point, if a little harsh. I'm excited about the athleticism and will wait to see how they contribute and develop before passing judgement.

I don't mind one or two of these projects, but I hate to see us burning too many schollies on these projects. If we couldn't fill these spots in the 2010 class, I would have liked to see the schollies carried over. OTOH, we've had some projects work out pretty well on the DL. The Rabid Goldfish, for one...

Experience along the lines is what matters more than athleticism, imo. Our coaches struggle to get them the valuable reps they need to get ready for game day. We need guys that have played DL since PeeWee and fit the mold.

You'll like the 3 guys we picked up then!

As long as Collins is running the defense, I don't see things getting better.

I guess I can understand a coach showing loyalty to his assistants, but when we are getting waxed by Toledo, changes need to be made. Same deal with Riddle. The ST's play has been embarrassing.

It probably is a little harsh, but the DL recruiting just seems very hodge podge. It seems with the exception of a couple guys like Nate Bonsu and Nick Kasa, we only sign projects. That combined with the fact that we never seem to make it a focus other than the 2009 class and I wonder what the strategy really is for this staff. I know we have talked in the past about Bandison likes a smaller number than most, but I really wish we would change that a bit. And yes, I realize that this is mostly a result of losing seasons, but I still have major doubts about Bandison as a recruiter.

I also maintain that part of the issue with DL recruiting arises from our scheme of using a LB as a pass rusher for several snaps a game. I am not sure the scheme is really working.

they did lose the Ed Nuckles (sp) kid. he was a decent recruit.

I'll probably catch some grief here, but with respect to Nuckols, don't you think his academic difficulties might be the reason he accepted the Buffs offer (i.e. nobody else truly offered because he wasn't getting in anywhere?) That kid was very highly thought of athletically and he ended up at a DII school. Not knocking the kid, but it seems to me a top 10 DT, or whatever he was, could have found a D1 home pretty easy if he had the grades. Just a thought. I feel bad for the kid and I hope he does well where he is.

Gotta love the thinly-veiled reason of "protecting the recruits". Just come out and say it: "I am in love with Dan Hawkins and he can do no wrong." Why is it only the Hawkins fluffers that constantly use this particular piece of rhetoric?

you think i like dan hawkins...? i cant wait for that ****er to be fired... i loved the guy... he kicked me in the balls... i cant wait to kick his ass to the curb... go **** yourself... you know dick... you are a nutless chimp... go find another ****in tree to bark up you ****in degenerate...

the reason we all try to protect the recruits is because A they chose one of the greatest universities in the land B they are kids playing their asses off for an education... and representing us... they have nothing to do with coaching politics...

Broken record. Cut, paste, repeat...

^^^This^^^. If we aren't landing first and second tier DL (exceptions like Kasa of course) then the question becomes do you: a) recruit undersized/less talented guys with experience, or b) recruit projects with the potential to turn into solid D1 ballers. I like taking on some projects to see if a couple will bloom, but to go all out with a boom or bust mentality is a little risky.

Either way, welcome to all three guys and best of luck to you!

Correct. He was an academic risk from day one and ended up not making it. I think he was worth the risk, but he epitomizes the DL recruiting of this staff. The one year they actually try to sign four guys and still one does not end up qualifying.

I am not knocking the effort, or the risk of taking a commitment from a guy who may have academic issues. I just wonder if CU would have gotten a sniff if he had the grades. Who knows? It's water under the bridge now and I wish Nuckols good luck where he is.

Healthy response.

It reeks of desperation on the part of the coaching staff.

Absolutely. But due to their lack of on-field success, they're forced into choosing between solid mid-tier prospects with low ceilings or they can target academic risks and late bloomers who have the athletic ability to develop into special players but may never qualify or develop.

I believe they are choosing the better of two bad options. At least it gives us hope. To use the DE position as an example, since it's the situation that started this thread: I have no problem taking risks on a player like Forrest West. Injury questions after missing his junior year really slowed his recruiting and brought down his rating. The problem is when all your recruits are "outside the box" type guys. What mitigates the risk of taking a guy like West is when you also bring in a guy like Nick Kasa in the same class, who you are almost certain will be a heck of a college player.

In my opinion, a program like CU shouldn't be taking more than 5 "outside the box" type prospects in a recruiting cycle. We need to build back to that, though. In the mean time, pray (if that's your thing) that most of these risks pan out. I think I'll go sacrifice a goat now.

Uhhhhhh.......what is everyone talking about? Did we just receive a couple of verbal commits?

Unconfirmed report that we have added a late signee to the 2010 class. Dakota Poole is a DE from Canada who plays football but was better known as a top guy on Canada's U20 national rugby team. Measurements are 6'6" and 260 lbs. Looks like he runs well and plays with a good pad level from the limited film we have on him. But obviously a project.

Not exactly. Nuckols was able to go the D2 route BECAUSE he was NCAA qualified. It was CU's admissions that denied Eddie boy. Your next coach will have to deal with this same retarded b.s.

NCAA clearance is less for D2. It was an NCAA issue. Nuckols refused to take a few community college classes, deciding CU did him wrong. If he had cleared NCAA, there would have been plenty of D1 opportunities after CU said 'no'.

Would you people quit ****ing complaining about the DL, you people are a broken record........:)

I will say that hawk's lunchpail and project recruiting is killing this team. I like bonsu , cunningham and pericak and herrod has played well. Hopefully Kasa steps up but other than that, I totally agree with Boulder Buff...
