One member of the University of Colorado football coaching staff won`t have job security fears to deal with this fall regardless of how the Buffs perform on the field.

Interesting. Glad it helped us land Berglund.

Having Kiesau under a multi-year deal that doesn't mandate a coordinator position isn't a bad thing at all. He's a very good coach and recruiter.

Yeah, I actually like that provision too. A new coach could slot him at WR/recruiting coordinator and I think he would do quite well.

Reading between the lines a bit here, but I think this is a way of Bohn saying that he doesn't want to lose Kiseau once he sh*t cans Hawkins.

It doesn't matter.

When Hawkins is fired he's probably gone anyway.

Hamstringing the new coach by requiring him to keep certain of Hawkins' coaches around is going to make it more difficult to hire a quality coach, IMO.

Meh, you are being a bit dramatic here. We are talking about one or two coaches at most, position coaches at that. Worst comes to worst, CU buys out the last year of Kiesau's contract if the new coach absolutely does not want him.

:yeahthat: I'm guessing this is 100% connected to Hawk's future. Berglund probably isn't the only recruiter to want to see at least some continuity in the coaching staff. Having a coach or two they can point to as being committed here beyond this season is a good thing, imo. And I think EK is a good choice to make this move with...

:stupid:

As far as continuity, it's also safe to say that Cabral will be on the CU coaching staff for as long as he wants to be on the CU coaching staff. So we can definitely sell a certain amount of coaching stability on both sides of the ball, despite out HC and his Boise coaches being on the hot seat.

with all respect to Cabral, I think it's kinda stupid to expect that any coach will remain once a new coach is hired. that doesn't happen about 95 % of the time.

IMO, more than a "back to the past" hire, maybe we do need to clean house. what's the "top end" of any staff we've had since Mac? 9, 10 wins?

If we're going to keep Cabral and Kiesau, we're probably going to keep Hagan too.

Hell might as well just move someone from inside the program to the HC position when Hawkins is terminated.

The new coach will have his choice of coaching. I think there is a good chance the only holdover will end up being Kiesau. He has lots of LA connections, so I would assume a new head coach would want to keep him on for that reason alone.

I think the chances that this is Cabral's last year at CU are pretty good, and that is not necessarily a bad thing. I love the guy, but it may be time for a change. I think it is even less likely that Hagan sticks around. Hagan has had plenty of chances to prove himself and has not really delivered.

Except that Cabral has been a full time assistant on the staff since 1989. He has already survived 3 coaching changes.

We've had three 10-win seasons since Mac retired. Weasel in the 1st two years post-Mac (obviously with Mac's guys) and GB in 2001.

In the end the decision has to be that of the new HC as to who stays and who goes, if the new HC decides that he doesn't want Kiesau around then they buy him out and he is gone. The buyout on an assistant coach is going to be fairly small in comparison to the cost of buying out Hawkins. That all said I can see the value in keeping Kiesau around as an assistant in some capacity. He has been a decent recruiter and by all accounts is liked and respected by the players. I don't think keeping Kiesau neccessarily says anything about keeping Hagan around, I would bet against him keeping his job unless the new HC is someone from within the program.

Cabral on the other hand I think is as solid as an assistant can be in a program. He is well respected in the coaching community and has coached in a variety of systems and with a number of different HCs and DCs. The question with him is more if he wants to stay or if he wants to go elsewhere and look for more opportunity to move up. If he goes he will take a lot of recruiting connections with him as well as a lot of goodwill from former players.

The guy who I would like to see stick around for a little longer is Ambrose. He is already showing to be a solid recruiter and all indications are that he is an excellent position coach who learns quickly and communicates well with kids. He has credibility due to his NFL experience and is young enough to relate to his players but mature enough to be an effective coach. He seems to like Boulder and if he can become part of a winning staff he could become a cornerstone guy for us.

I'm glad that everyone is happy with this move.... but it seems very, very strange. Was Eric in danger of leaving us? Why lock yourself up in a contract when no one knows what this place will look like in 6 months? Could they be angling for Kiesau to become the next HC?

I don't know, hopefully this ends up being a perceptive move by the AD.

1 10 win season in the last 15 years? none in the last 8?

i think it's time we start over. i love coach Cabral but i think a total rehaul is what we need at this point. not nostalgia.

I tend to agree, actually. Coach Mac didn't keep any of Fairbanks' coaches. The next guy isn't going to be carrying on a winning tradition. He's going to be re-building from the ground up.
