Woelk: End of rivalry with Huskers

Generally agree with the column. "Manufactured" or not, the Nebraska rivalry was born after being in-conference with them for 30 years. Does CU have to wait another 30 years to develop the Utah rivalry to that level? Probably not, but it will take some time.

Nebraska on the other hand has immediate replacements for CU with Iowa, Wisconsin, and Penn State.

Sure the Pac-12 is a MUCH better fit and there is no regret in my statements. The schools in the Pac are a more intriguing lineup than the Big 12 slate, so we might lose a better rivalry game, but we improve all the rest of the games.

After the initial honeymoon is over, I highly doubt any Pac school will flood Denver/Boulder like the Corn did and that is a real concern. Economically, let's just hope those Pac-transplants living in Colorado can make up for it by spreading out their attendance over the rest of the conference slate. This is a reason I would support this game remaining on the non-conference slate. My preference is to play it at Mile High as an annual "neutral site" game (50% of the tickets for each school), while having the CU-CSU game go back to a campus home/home series (or 2-1 for CU). This would give us the best of both worlds.

I wonder what will happen to the Husker golf cart at the Colorado National Club?
I really hope that they keep it. Could be a great reminder of what once was ..........

Seriously, I agree with Woelk. Part of what made the CU-NU rivalry (or whatever the corn wish to call it) special is that there are so many Husker alumni who live in Colorado. Not only do we have to deal with the invasion of the red hoard every other year at football games, we have to deal with them in every aspect of our daily lives - corn co-workers, neighbors, etc. - corn bumper stickers and decals on about 1/3 of the cars on the road - corn red t-shirts and/or hats anywhere you go anytime. While none of that will change, the interactions between us should once we move out of the same conference. And, while I despise red with every fiber of my being, I think we will both be losing out in the long run.

I won't miss the game. One bit. Seriously. I've hated the fuskers for a long time, but that hate is gone, replaced by ambivalance. They're no different than Wisconsin or Minnesota or Penn State now. Just another school in another conference that we'll never play unless we see them in a bowl game.

Big time "meh" from me. I don't crave rivalries.

Mixed feelings. It was always a big game for CU once Mac set his sights on Big Red. I have to admit, he did it because NU was the standard back then. The run NU put together throught the late eighties early nineties was impressive. But, I agree the holier than thou, look what we did in 1983 schtick gets old. Over all, I am of the opinion all good things must come to an end. I am looking forward to Pac 10 play...and a new HC.

I know this will never happen, but dump CSU and replace with NU. We gain nothing by playing little brother every year. Plus I really could care less about CSU. NU is our true rival in my mind. I also like ScottyBuff's suggestion in this regard.

There have been plenty of exciting games between the two schools, but you won't find a CU-CSU game on the all-time top 10 list of either program.

I beg to differ. I bet most Ramnation fans would put a couple csu/CU games into their Alltime Top 10 list-
probably the game w/the headspike and the one when CU lost big and the tear gas sprayed the csu band-

Baylor for the rest of this year, to be replaced by Neuheisel the year after.

Baylor? really? I don't think so. They made a desperate attempt at relevance and fell far short. I don't hate them. They lost. They're to be pitied, not hated.

To me the Nebraska rivalry was always about football and their often irritating holier-than-thou fanbase, but at the end of the day I respected their program and it's success.

Baylor's administration took desperate cheap shots at our University as a whole and made attempts to degrade our reputation publicly which goes way beyond football. I pity them as well, but would take great pleasure in hitting golf balls at them.

Problem is we are going to the 12-Pac not the Sun belt.

Ya if you want a guarantee loss 95% of the time every year. Our success percentage would go up if we scheduled OU OOC every year instead.

I very much doubt that the vast majority of fuskers here in Colorado ever attended NU. Just a bunch of border jumpers hanging on to their only state identity. I for one won't miss them. I seethed every time they filled Folsom on T+1. Good riddance. Keep coming to Folsom though husker fans, since you will have no other quality college football to watch live for hundreds of miles.

Coming from a Sooner family, my earliest memory of any college football game was the 1988 NU-OU game and I'm still peeved about that game although I am a CU fan these days. I can say with certainity that I was born to hate the Huskers since I was born in Oklahoma as well.

I'll miss the game. It was great fun and one of the best things about the latter days of the Big Eight and it was THE rivalry at the start of the Big 12.

Oh well -- Utah will grow into the role in time. Nothing stays the same.

I'm actually looking forward to having a few years without a rival. Utah will always have BYU, and I suppose we'll be stuck with CSU. I can live with that.

Don't care if I ever see fusker red in Folsom again. Seriously, when they were in town Folsom security almost treated you like the enemy if you wore CU gear. Especially after the '05 game. I could rant on and on about this, but whatever. I won't hate them after this season anymore so there is no point(Other than to say the Coloradans for Nebraska group can all go **** themselves). I respect their program, and the way that state supports it is impressive, and honestly wish them the best in the Big 10. Think it'd be cool if the next time we met up after this season was in the Rose Bowl.

Any thoughts from Buff fans about this article? Other then the usual "**** the fuskers" type things.

The abandonment of Front Range Huskers by their beloved University is win-win for CU fans.

When Colorado based Huskers talk about the Big 10, no one cares. It's irrelevent. Michigan-v-Nebraska watch parties will be fringe gatherings with all the social currency of a Tupperware convention. Poof. Out of site, out of mind. Nebraska disappears from watercooler chatter on Monday morning. Noice.

The people of Nebraska and in Big 10 country have betrayed and abandoned their Colorado based brethren. Colorado and Broncos fans are not going to watch, let alone critique any Husker performance. The annual smack of the last several decades is being replaced by an akward silence. The past is the past. The record and the bragging rights will soon have the value of confederate money.

Any Colorado based Husker who truely loves football will have to head to DIA or take I-76 east to join their corn shucking brothers. Or they have to take a long look in the mirror and tell themselves, "When in Rome..."

If they truely want to enjoy an exciting college game day atmosphere in all of it's beer gulping, brät grilling splendor, they might turn up in Folsom. Within a decade, their children, and maybe a few lonesome Osborn devotees might actually wear black and gold.

I would like to see us play periodically OOC over the years.

It will be interesting to see where we both end up.
-Will we benefit in recruiting from a closer association with California and Arizona (Texas not mentioned since I expect what we do get won't change much)?
-What will be the overall impact on recruiting with the league change for the Huskers? Will they be able to maintain strong recruiting without a connection to Texas? Will they shift to competing for recruits in a shrinking talent pool in the rust belt?

Will be interesting to see where we both end up in ten years.

I just have to LMAO about this post. Many people (Buff fans) really don't understand the loyalty and dedication Nebraska Fans have with "their" team.

But none the less.

Good luck in the 12-Pac!

Didn't say Nebraska fans were the gold standard. I said they are incredibly loyal and dedicated. Nothing more, nothing less.

Good luck in the 12-Pac!

Enjoy that Husker loyalty.

We don't care, just like we don't care about Ohio State loyalty.

I won't miss them or the game, but as somebody said, as long as our great state of Colorado exists, fuskers will come.

Surveyor - you are absolutely correct. Colorado fans do not "understand" Nebraska fans. Couldn't possibly - as our situations are as different as different can be. In the same light, Nebraska fans do not "understand" Colorado fans. They don't understand why we get perturbed when the red hordes descend into Boulder every other year. After all, they are just supporting their team. We could go on ad nauseum, but why waste the time and energy. We're just different folk.

On a serious note, what is the feeling in Nebraska? Obviously, the Huskers are glad to be going to the Big Televen12, but is there any consensus that you know of about the demise of the day after Thanksgiving game? I would be very interested in the view from the other side.

Good post.

The Nebraska fans that I have talked with regarding the demise of the day after Thanksgiving game say it will be a different day not playing the Buffs. But with that said, they are really looking to the future and many are speculating Nebraska will have a tie with Wisconsin, Iowa or perhaps Penn St. for an annual match up on that date. Just last night Barry Alverez, AD for Wisconsin (and an old Nebraska guy) was interviewed on the Big Red Wrap-up Show on NET and he was asked about that game being played on that day after Turkey Day. He is actively promoting that Wisconsin and Nebraska meet every year on that date. I think that match up would be a great one. Each team and their fans are rabid about each of their respective teams. Lots of tradition on both sides. The Nebraska vs Iowa game would be a good one too since we share a border with Iowa, and the Hawkeye fans seem to have an inbred attitude against Nebraska. I say it is an inferiority complex or something. Nebraska and Iowa have rarely played each other since the 70's, so there is not much of a rivalry there. But a good one will develop whether the game is played the last game of the year or the first one.

Once again, many Nebraska fans don't have much to say about the loss of the Colorado game. This could be because the Buffs have been down the last few years (or more), and haven't acted as though they really want to take the opportunity to make the necessary changes to get the Buffs really going again (coaching comes mind).

On a personal note: I would expect fan protests in the streets of Boulder and on the CU campus if the Buffs don't come up with true some solid preformances on the field ("win some games" if you just want to call it out). Who is going to be in charge of printing up the signs? I may come to Boulder and join the protest.

Good Luck in the 12-Pac!
