Are the buffs full of thugs?

So, I am in a war of words on facebook with someone that goes to my church. He is a boulder detective, so he does get some credit for knowledge of CU players getting in trouble. What started this is him saying that it is a fact that CU's football team is full of criminal thugs. I asked him what he considers being a thug. Does bike stealing make you a thug? Anyway, I am awaiting a response. I know we have had some problems, but for him to say we are full of thugs is kinda BS IMO. If we are truly full of thugs we would be hearing about attempted murders and rapes all the time. We have KIDS making dumb decisions sometimes just like at any other school, but FULL of thugs? really? I call bs on that one, but hey he works for the Boulder PD, ummmm Jon Benet??

Every team, ours included, has its share of thugs on the football squad. Full of them? I doubt that.

Can't recall any of the current players being in trouble for guns or drugs (other than weed). What thugs?

We have young men making dumb decisions, as you said.
I await his description of "thug" but I would say no.

For some people "thugs" means guys who hung around with a bad crowd in high school (ie. gangs) --- but as far as our guys getting in more trouble, or serious trouble while at Boulder, than guys at other schools, it's not true.

Maybe we need a thread on all the various dumb decisions/lawbreaking etc by college players everywhere to put the Buffs' actions in perspective. We look pretty good in comparison to a lot of programs.

I will respond with the same answer as I have given here before and given to idots who have made the same accusations about the program and college football in general to my face;

Are there some bad characters on the CU team, of course, there are guys who drink to much, who get into fights, who fight with their girlfriends, who steal bikes, who drive after drinking, etc. the same as any college team in the country to one extent or another.

This is not a condition of being a football player (or a basketball player, or an athlete period,) this is a condition of being a male between the ages of 18-23 away from home for the first time in your life in an evironment full of other people in the same age group. My contention is that if you were to randomly pick 100 students on the Boulder campus who entered college directly from high school and are not living at home with their parents or other relatives and you would find a similar if not higher incidence of negative activities as you have with the +/-100 young men of the football team. College aged males do stupid things and without parental supervision do stupid things repeatedly, some confine their stupid things to fairly harmless activities others do stupid things that are noteworthy, especially if they happen to be a part of the football team.

The media likes to take advantage of the opportunity to tag stupid activities when they can with the the stereotypes about football players. Lynn Katoa never was officially a CU Buff and has been out of school and off the team for how long now, but still is identified as a CU Buff when he attacks another individual (who the paper avoids recognizing for not fighting.) A walk-on DT gets in trouble and the media makes it out to be a scholarship starter who had been hotly pursued by the coaching staff, etc. etc.

This is not a football condition it is a college condition. That said coaches and athletic departments have some control over the general environment and the type of kids they bring in. Oklahoma under Switzer sought out agressive kids from lower income environments and made it known that just about anything would be tolerated as long as the team won, Miami did the the same thing in their glory years.
At the same time BYU which has one of the most restrictive conduct codes and tightest supervision of athletes (and students in general) a couple of years ago had an incident with students in an off-campus apartment engaging in giving underage girls (14-15 year olds) alcohol and other substances and engaging in sex with them against their will, this is not the first time it happened but was notable for the media because this time it involved football players, prior times did not and thus were treated differently.

Thos who want to tear down college football will always turn to the "thuggery" card but again it is not about football, it is about being a young male without supervision. You could easily make the same charges against the military if you wanted dealing with young recruits but we don't because it doesn't advance some cause to do so.

If you take the boulder officer who said that, and have him work a month detail in Denver, his statement would be different at the end of the month. If you took an officer from Denver, and had him work Boulder for a month he would tell you the football players are good guys. The players are just college kids. They are part of a large identifiable group, which allows them to be singled out much easier as well. If you want to look at a comparison to the total student body, in the last 9 months players have gotten in trouble for the following: one busted for smoking pot, one kid busted for stealing a text book/sort of (as he did leave his bag behind), one kid busted for DUI and missed his court date (who is no longer on the team), and one kid steal a bike. That is four of 115 football players, or just under 4%. I don’t think I would be going out on a limb by saying that 4% of all students at CU have had this type of trouble with the law in the last 9 months. If you took into account all MIP’s, theft, accademic cheating, DUI’s, assault/fights, vandalizations, and other crimes that will take place over that time frame, I would say the football players are just normal college kids that have a higher profile when they get caught. The other thing that magnifies the crime is the fact they are in Boulder and not Baltimore. A walk-on football player stealing a bike wouldn’t make the footnotes of the crime for the day in a big city.

As a youth I spent a lot of time in Greenwood Village, and I assure you every GV cop would have told you the world is going to burn because the kids today are all hoodlums. We would loiter, TP, and occasionally egg a house or car, and the police officers would treat these events like they were the gateway actions to major felonies. When a cop doesn’t have to deal with major crime on a regular basis, their view of what constitutes “thugs” is different from what an actual thug is.

Ha. Is this from the same Boulder PD that likes to label end of year parties as riots? I remember one of the last so called riots in 2000 or so. I was on the hill going from one friend's house to another carrying a beer. Cops literally came out from behind some trees and escorted me to the police annex to write me an open container ticket. A few days later the Camera ran an article about the "riots" and a list of names of all those involved and guess who's name showed up? Complete joke. Buff from 76 said it best, let them spend a day in Denver or any major city for a day before spouting off.

What years were you terrorizing GV? I grew up there as well.

Every school and I mean every school has some guys with questionable character. Katoa is well on his way to thugdom, he isnt even on the damn team though. I wouldnt consider Simas a thug, he just cant handle his liquor and doesnt make good decisions. As someone above pointed out, making dumb decisions, like stealing a damn bike, doesnt make you a thug. I dont think we have more players like that than anywhere else.

Consider the source. The Boulder PD is not a shining example of fair-mindedness when it comes to applying the law. Some would say they have a racist bent. Look at a few years ago when they arrested a couple of CU players for a crime because the victim said her assailants were "big and black". But to be fair, I am sure there are plenty of good Boulder Police Officers. The one who goes to your church does not appear to be one of the good ones. Anyone in law enforcement knows that you have to be careful about generalizing. To classify someone as a thug because of their membership on the football is just plain silly, that would be like saying all motorcyclist are gang members.

There have been some bad apples on the football team but that does not mean the football team is full of thugs.

Love this reply! Thanks! Still awaiting response. This comment by him actually hurt some. When you call the buffs thugs its like calling my family thugs.

Drop the Ramsey bomb on him. He wants to throw the Buffs under the bus, throw the Boulder Detectives under the bus.

of course, responses like this lead to "unfriending" but in this case I wouldn't sweat it.

I don't care, honestly he's the one leadign to the unfreinding. I don't do well with people throwing my team under the bus. Like I said it's like messing with my family.

Just go on a Mike Gundy rant against him. This statement must have been made by a person who doesn't have a child. Trying to kick a team when they're down! These kids go to class, they're respectful to the public, and they're good kids!!! Someone calls your kids THUGS, and they come home crying to their mom, you'd understand. Don't go after these amateur athletes! Dont' downgrade them. That's why I dont read your facebook posts, because they're GARBAGE. Attacking these amateur athletes for doing everything right. Where are we at in society today. Go after the coaches, they're men, they're older than 40. That aint true! That's not true! So get your facts straigt. and i hope someday you have a child and someone downgrades them, and you have to look em in the eye - and you'll realize they're supposed to be mature adults but they're really not. That's all i got to say, makes me wanna puke........ (applause.......)

FIFY. Not sure why he says bedowngrade them first, but, he does.

Great post by the way. REP.

You arent going to be able able to reason with this cheese dick. Just tell him to **** off, and get AIDS.

Tell him to look at our record...if we were full of thugs we'd be winning a lot more, right?

I just looked at the douche's facebook. He looks like one of those cops that became cops for the power. He looks like he was probably beaten up by the "jocks" and now needs to discipline them. I've never understood why the BPD seems to hate CU. I've never had any problems with the Westminster PD but I've had a bunch of issues with Boulder PD.

I think you should take him out "fishing." knowing the Boulder PD they would never find him.

Please don't link him this thread.

^^^^This.

Leash - your buddy is a "TOOL". It is somewhat disconcerting that a BPD detective thinks our beloved Buffs are nothing but thugs. What an idiotic generalization... What a silly fool he is. Surely it's just jealousy and sour grapes on his part. I can say with confidence that BPD is full of more "thugs" than our football team.
