BOULDER — They come from all corners of the prep football world. They could only be more far apart if they belonged to the United Nations.
Southern California. New Jersey. North Carolina. Alabama. That's how far Colorado went for a freshman running back quartet that must add some bash to its dash.

i realize that "the world is smaller" with electronic, personal communications and Boulder is totally kick-ass but the unspoken reality here is we are beating precious few SEC, PAC, and Big East teams for these kids. really.

sure, it's been done to death but if ISU under McCarney, KU with Mangino, and Mizzou can win with Texas "b" players.....we ought to have a presence there, too. inexplicably and bailed out by the Pac move, we don't.

Totally agree. Our lack of presence in Texas is an embarrassment. People here like to make excuses for it by saying it doesn't matter but the bottom line is that Texas produces the most Div 1 football players a year. How can you not be in there? Why would you shun the state? Makes no sense whatsoever.

In the instance of the RBs in the 2010 class, it was pretty interesting circumstances how it all came together. Tony Jones had schools like BC and Michigan calling early until they thought there was little to no shot he would qualify.

Trea Jones had a pretty serious injury during his senior season. Torres is going to be a LB when it's all said and done. Clark is a guy that was thought to be a bit of an academic risk.

IMO, Tony Jones is a legit BCS recruit. Remains to be seen about the other three.

I'm not really sure who said we should never go to Texas for a recruit, but unless we're winning, it's going to be hard to pull any significant talent out of there.

In my (very amateur) opinion, we should not make Texas a top priority. We should always test the waters and jump in when there's interest in CU, I just don't believe we are going to make the same impact there that Mac made in the 80's. Especially with Hawkins.

maybe we don't make the same impact as Mac did when OU was sliding post-Switzer cheating and the slimy days of the late-era SWC....but, i think one needs to notice that when ISU, KU, MU had success it correlates with them pulling players from Texas. Too much emphasis is placed on skill positions, but McCarney and Mangino were pulling solid 2-3 star guys and taking them to bowl games. more than we can say since losing to Clemson 5 years ago. TCU is ranked in the pre-season top 10. how many guys on their squad did UT, ATM, and OU pass on?

In Texas these these kids lift all-year round, and have full spring practices, summer 7-7 leagues....that's part of why they produce so much talent....not just because of something in the water.

if you can recruit a kid to Ames or Lawrence, not Boulder?

Texas HS programs are equivalent (or better) to small college programs in terms of programs, facilities, and support.

Bingo.

I'm not trying to say we should abandon Texas. My point is that one state doesn't make or break us.

For every successful state program(UT, A&M, TTU), there's ones that are, and always have struggled (BU,Rice,UTEP).

I like to think Mangino's coaching is what turned the tide at KU. Same thing at ISU with McCarney. I believe his coaching is what led those programs out of the muck. Not what state they got their players from.

I don't think there's a right or wrong side to this argument. I just think people place too much emphasis on weird things. Like what state a kid is from. His 40 time, or how long his arms are.
