CJ & Klatt on QB Situation - 8/9

Today on CJ and Klatt they discussed the QB situation. Klatt felt very strongly that Hansen is getting "jobed" out of valuable reps by not declaring him the starter. He also felt that it was very important from leadership, confidence and continuity perspectives to name him the starter soon than later. CJ actually completely agreed. This is just meant to repeat what was said over the air, not to voice an opinion from me.

I have not seen any of the limited practices to date, but to those of you have, do you agree? How does each guy look? And for that matter throw Hirschmann in there too.

I get the leadership, confidence and continuity argument. I think I can counter it with the "Tyler needs to feel some pressure, and competition is good for player development" argument. There's no right or wrong opinion there at this time. How Tyler plays against CSU will tilt the argument to one camp or the other.

But the "valuable reps" argument doesn't seem to have merit any more. In the spring it did, because Tyler and Cody were splitting reps with the 1s. But unless I've missed something, every report I've seen on fall camp has Tyler taking the reps with the 1s and Cody taking the reps with the 2s.

Having Klatt and CJ come out as former Buff QBs and say it's important to name a starter and treat him like one is very persuasive, though. I'm not sure they understand the reps situation, so it's still not completely convincing.

I don't know that I agree with Klatt or CJ on this, but the perspective was so opinionated I felt a need to post it.

Everything I have read indicates Tyler is getting the bulk of the reps, so I just wanted to know if Klatt is just blowing smoke on this one.

I love Klatt and CJ. But, Klatt does have it in for Hawkins. That is obvious. He also said that he has not been to a practic yet. On the other hand, I think the time is rapidly (weeks end) where Tyler should be made official. But, yeah, from all I've seen reported, Tyler is getting pretty much all the reps with the first team. Can someone who has been to a practice verify that?

I suppose it depends if the 2s are getting more reps than they normally would. Otherwise, I agree with you

in the post yesterday Hawkins did continue to play the we haven't decided on a QB yet, he seems to be the only one that is taking this line, he even went as far as to say they may rotate. McKnight has already declared Hansen the starter. We have lived through this the last couple of years, the uncertainty clearly hasn't been producing results, why not just call hansen the starter and go from there?

I was at the practice last night & Tyler was in with the 1s the entire time, Cody was in with the 2s & Nick in with the 3s & 4s. It was obvious (to me, at least) that Tyler is being treated as the starting QB at this point.

How is Nick looking in the 3rd spot?

I like these guys. They dont drink the koolaid, and have a lot of CU credibility. Unlike the other sports media around Denver, that either simply hate CU or drink too much kool aid.

I heard the segment. It seemed like there was just a little bit of sensationalism, but JK made what I believe to be very valid points. The CH/TH "competition" is the 800 lb. gorilla in the Buff newsroom, why not kill it and let the story be something else by naming TH the starter?

We have now spent 9 months getting worked up over Hawk naming the starting QB. I’ve been thinking about it and there are really only three reasons why we haven't announced a starter:

1. Nepotism really is kicking in and hawk wants Cody to be a D1 QB. If the challenger were Nick Nelson vs. Tyler, he would have already announced that Tyler is the starter.
2. Hawk is trying to be clever. By not naming a starter he thinks CSU will have to game plan both QB’s.
3. Rather than focusing on what the fans want, he is trying to make a statement to his players/future players. Putting aside the fact that the player in question is his son, here is a player who has opened the season as the starter the last three years. Two years ago the player in question was replaced as the starter and then he won the job back by the end of the season. Last year the player was replaced, and never won his job back. Is this more of a statement to current and future players that if you lose playing time (for whatever reason) you can win it back, but it is up to you to do so.

I would like to think that Hawk is all about #3, and the fact that the position is QB and it’s his son competing for the starting spot distorts the message. Other than Solder, Miller, Smith, Brown, McKnight, Stewart, & Clemons are there any other guys you would say are “known starters” or should be announced as the starter at this point in camp. The fact that the players are saying who the starter is sends a really clear message, and the fact Tyler is getting reps with the #1’s speaks to what the announcement will be in the future.

Klatt was saying that he was talking to DC around the big 12 and he asked them how they game plan for TH? (paraphrasing) "He is tough on you as a coordinator, do you pressure him or do you keep him in the pocket, it's tough he can beat you with his arm or his legs."

on CH "Just pressure him, he's not quick enough to scramble and his release point isn't high enough to sight adjust and beat you on a blitz"

So he was saying they just game plan for TH.

This is the crap that kills me. I'm all for criticizing Hawkins the Elder's stand on this but that criticism carries a ****load more weight when it comes from someone who's actually been at practice, seen who is taking reps with the 1s and who with the 2s and therefore can actually assess how each is performing. Anything else is talking out one's ass.

Mark MacIntosh on the radio yesterday said the exact same thing. There is not a D-Coordinator that is worried about planning for Cody. Everyone knows he can't beat you with his arm deep, so simply crowd the line, take away his visual lanes and it is game over.

The bigger concern is TH and his ability to move and keep plays alive.

What I don't understand is why TH has not been publicly named the starter, thus making all of this a non-story and eliminate any distraction. There is not a team on CU's schedule that is worried about Cody being named the starter in some lame attempt to confuse the defense. Publicly announce TH as the starter and if he fails against CSU then we can have the debate on when Cody should play.

This. The word has been out about how to defend CH since late October 2007....

Hawk has never named a starting QB until about a week prior to the first game every year he's been here. It's gone pretty well so far, why change tactics?

BS! There should not be a debate about Cody playing, period. Especially after one game. Give TH the non conference season at a minimum to get things right. If after the first four it's obvious he can't get it done then look to Hirshman. We have no shot with Cody. He's a great kid, a gamer and a true Buff, but we've seen what he brings to the table and it's not pretty. I guessing TH will do well, though.

BS! Cody gets way too much grief. Tyler is the best option, for sure, but if he goes down, Cody will take over.

If I remember correctly, Hawk said that his OC would name the QB starter. If that's true, then rest easy my Buff bruthas, because based on this quote from Kiesau in the Boulder Daily Camera, Hansen is the guy:

Q: Cody Hawkins seemed to be getting more repetitions with the first team in Tuesday morning's practice than he had been previously in camp. Is that true?
A: "Yes."
Q: Why is that?
A: "It's nothing that Tyler (Hansen) did wrong. I just want to give him a shot here with some of the new guys we got out here and try to get him in rhythm and timing with everybody. Tyler is still our guy and he's still rolling with the ones. I talked to them about it and they kind of knew it, but it was nothing that Tyler did wrong and we put Cody in. We just want to keep them both sharp and both fresh so they're both ready to go."
Q: How would you characterize that competition at this point?
A: "I would characterize it as very healthy. It's a good strong feeling and they are both playing better because of it. And that's why I want to do that. I want to make sure that Cody gets in there so Tyler says, 'Hey, I've got to be sharp because if I don't there is somebody very good behind me.' So I think it's very healthy."

I hope you all are correct about TH, but until it's official you just never know with DH.

I certainly hope that the players at least truly know who is the starter (as has been indicated by McKnight, etc.). No need for that kind of stress when you are trying to resurrect a program.
