Phil Steele has CU going bowling

I guess it's something. But Big XII #8? I sure hope we can do better than that.

The Sporting News college fb preview issue arrived last night. They have the Buffs going 6-6 and finishing 4th in the North. Interesting that they project a 3-1 OOC record, which means a win over either Georgia or Cal. They have the Buffs playing Rutgers in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankme Stadium....

it would make me laugh to see Notre Dame play in something called the "Beef O'Brady's Bowl". Not as much as them in no bowl, but laugh nonetheless.

I figured the Dallas Football Classic was the new name for the Texas Bowl but that's Big XII #7, Baylor.

The NCAA needs to start regulating these sponsors, if only to save everyone some humiliation. Seriously. Look at some of these bowl game names:

Beef O'Brady's
uDrove
R+L Carriers
San Diego County Credit Union
Advocare 100
Little Caesars
EagleBank
Bell Helicopter
Chick-fil-A

Wasn't Beef O'Brady an all-American lineman at ND back in the 50s??

It is completely out of hand....it seems so gaudy now, I remember the days when it was just the plain old Cotton, SUgar, Peach, Rose and Ornage Bowls among others. Now everything is for sale. I defer to Mr. Hicks...

Does the conference influence the selections that bowls make or do they get to pick who they want based on where they are in the pecking order and who from the conference is eligible? Or is it rigid (you finished 2nd so you go to the Cotton Bowl)?

I honestly don't know. I'm worried that we'll get screwed by the combination of the Big 12 not wanting to be represented in a marquee game by a departing member and CU's history of not traveling very well.

Well, I know a bowl committee member. Once the bowl affiliation is made with the conference, that is pretty much the end of any formal influence. Under some circumstances, a conference may put some pressure on the bowl committee over whom from the conference they invite, but it isn't real common and it's purely political. For the most part, bowl selection is geared to one thing: what available team will bring the most $$$$/fans, after that the agenda item is how many seats the committee members want and where do they want their tickets to be.

this is why the proliferation of bowls in Texas was very bad for CU (and the North teams, really) with the equator moving even further south to benefit South teams. Cotton, Alamo, Texas Bowl, Dallas Bowl all looking to take ATM, Tech, or even OSU if given the choice between one of those teams over CU or Kansas since they are going to have local alums and Texans will travel in Texas to see their football team. So, speaking hypothetically, the outcome is that between two "equal" teams, your Alamo bowl at the old #4 spot is more likely to take ATM over CU and we get farmed off to someplace further down the pecking order with less revenue. Though, admittedly, San Antonio isn't what most CU fans consider a hot spot to be in December or Jan. But, the revenue, more attractive TV date/time, and prestige issue were very much tilted in favor of South teams and the rewards of post-season play. and increasingly so....such that the Texas/South teams autonomy was in tact while North teams are dependent on how things shake out.

FYI: The Dallas Football Classic is the Cotton Bowl's (stadium, not CB Committee) way of staying relevant in the bowl world.

When will Vail or Aspen or Steamboat or Gunnison host a Snow Bowl?

If Boise and Shrieveport can do it, so can ski country. There'd be a lot of folks who'd enjoy a football-ski vacation that time of year.

And there are probably some pro teams who wouldn't mind using some big fancy indoor-outdoor stadium high in the mountains for a training camp.

Phil Steele knows a lot about college football, but his freakin' magazine is virtually unreadable. He bombards the reader with lots of old information, and some new stuff, in the tiniest print available. You can use the magazine to ferret out some fact or another, but you can't "read" any of the team write-ups in any conventional sense.

Every year I buy it, and every year it sits on a table in the tv room, largely unread.... Another $8 down the rat hole....

I bought one a couple years back. (2007) PS was using all that tiny print to cover events that happend in 2000. As I was torturing my eyes, I'm wondering, what the heck does the team in 2000 have to dowith 2007? Tons of info, but hard to access.

I always buy Steele's magazine and while it's full of detailed information, one of the things I like the least about it is the lack of good summary or synopsis sections. The only place he really does that is in each of the conference preview main pages and then a sentence or two at the very end of each team's section, but you have to dig for that. He's also lacking a good offensive and defensive summary for each team, which could come in very handy when watching just about any non-CU game and you want to get a quick overview of the teams you're watching. Which is why I buy a 2nd magazine (usually Athlon's) to have around just to get these types of summaries and also to have another viewpoint on teams. And yes he does repeat alot of information from year to year in his "Surprise Teams", "Most Improved Teams", and "Bowls and Playoffs" sections.

I know alot of people , including myself don't have any interest in watching 6 - 6 teams play in a bowl game.

It might just be my imagination, but the last couple years I've felt like PS's magazine is getting worse that way. It's like he doesn't want to waste the time going back and cleaning up all the old information anymore and just adds the last season's info to what he already had written up. I honestly see no reason to put any information in about a program that dates back farther than the earliest recruits still on the team. Especially if the coaching staff isn't even the same as it was back then....

This is why your TV comes with a remote that makes it easy to change channels.

Blame me, then. In December, I start thinking about how I'm going to have to go 8 months without college football and I watch every game they put on tv.

I think I'd be a little pissed off if my credit union was making million dollar payouts to football teams instead of dividends or cheaper fees.
