DB depth getting thinner.

Reports from a couple of different sources including Rivals that Vince Ewing suffered a major knee injury and is likely out for the season.

If this is case we get even thinner in the defensive backfield. He was listed as the backup at strong safety behind Anthony Perkins.

Hope the best for the kid.

Ewing was having a really good camp, too.

Hope he comes back 100% in the spring. He was showing that he can play a significant role for us.

Sending some AB karma Vince's way.

I'm still torn. If Hawk loses his first three games, he's going to be gone. I think that would be a positive.
If Hawk wins his first 4 games it will be a huge positive for the program.

I'm seriously tired of people rooting against Hawk.

I really don't believe in Hawks coaching ability. even if we did go to a bowl, I still think Hawkins is not the coach that will take this program to the top. He's shown that he can't develop talent.

Do you?

No, not really. But I'm hoping I'm wrong.

He seems like a good guy who wants to win the right way.

I like Dan personally. I will be a fan no matter where he goes. I'm just not buying it anymore. I don't want to head into the Pacific 12 with a ****ty coach. If Dan goes to a ****ty bowl game and keeps his job, that's going to set this program back imo.

This.

I never want to see the Buffs lose for any reason. If Dan Hawkins wins football games he can say all the silly stuff he wants. Just win.

In 2005, I was rooting as hard as possible for a team and program that appeared to have the school, administration, press, state legistlature, DA's office, Boulder PD, and much of the community trying to hang them, any hope of it coming back under Barnett imploded. We lost 4 straight, including 100-6 combined to NU and UT. Heart broken.

It was also very clear and would become clear that the recruiting classes of '04 and '05 (Gary's last) during this above "Scandal" and the '06 class that Hawk would bring in with about 1 month to assemble, would have very little contributors for a variety of reasons.

I told people, this is going to really come home and hurt in '08 and '09 when these kids should be upperclassmen. The '07 kids are what is now our RS Junior class. The '04/05/06 classes were really poor. Check the NFL draft the last few years.

If someone would have told me then, "we are going to be really bad for awhile, and even in 2009, we will suck, but our young guys will be getting a lot of experience as we attempt to built talent and depth and in 2010 we are going to be back to bowl games and perhaps top 25 - and the program will finally be perceived as turning a corner and recruiting will pick up nicely", I would have said "I WILL TAKE THAT". Hell yes.

I can't figure out 2009. Obviously Dan had higher hopes as well with his 10 win forecast. Maybe he can't coach, but maybe, just maybe, it needed another year. Either way, he got the year.

I'm optimistic about 2010 - I always am. If we lose early, fine, let's start looking for a new coach. But I'm not ready to root against them to get a new coach because I think he may not be the guy. Hell, he may be the guy! Win 10 freakin games and you are my guy Dan. I will put up with all the silly crap you say - and it will probably become entertaining once again.

BTW, Mac says the most irritating things but everyone loves it because he was winning. If he was losing, you'd think he was nuts....

We'll know something in 3 weeks.

This thread was about our depth at DB - which is FINE. Has anybody looked at our roster? We have umpteen of them. Ewing was not going to be a major contributor this season, anyway.

Good post, Buffaholic. I agree with everything you said.

Everything about this year seems different from the past couple of years. There's lots of depth and enthusiasm. There are a couple of new, exciting receivers who just might bring some magic to the offense. The quarterback situation seems much more settled (despite Dan's continued talk about razors and the like). There's a wealth of experience on both lines. Maybe, this IS the time....

I continue to believe, perhaps delusionally, that the Buffs were a decent field goal kicker away from being at least a .500 team the past two years. My biggest fear is that kicking (and punting) issues will continue to haunt the Buffs this year. But, I still think this team will win 7 or 8 games.

Root against your team in the hopes of getting a new coach? Not me, not ever.

I loved how people twisted my post and said I was rooting against the Buffs.

If Hawk can win on the road and give us eight wins this year great. But if he loses his first three games, we should can his ass.

I feel him going 500 with this team would be a major disaster for the Buffs. I don't think the AD would fire him for a 6-6 year. Keeping Hawk after a mediocre season heading into the Pac 12? No thank you Buffaholic.

Seriously sucks for Ewing. If he can get a medical redshirt and comes back healthly, there may be a silver lining for both him and the Buffs in the long run. In any case, rehabing a torn ACL is no fun.

As far as this year goes, we do have depth issues, but better to lose a saftey than a corner.

This is taken from the post spring Depth Chart.

Free Safety
Polk
Jaffee
Orms
Ham

Strong Safety
Perkins
Ewing (Injured)
Sandersfield

I'm not sure where these guys fall in at safety.
Ussery
Pugh (Transfer)
Meyer (Walk On)
Olatoye

I know there are some holes in this list. They moved Deji to safety during fall camp. Does anyone know where he will line up? SS? FS?

Am I the only one that sees that depth chart and isn't exactly enthralled? This is not good. Other than Orms, are any of those guys even scholarship players? Olatoye is a CB. Looks like we'll be needing Terrell Smith to contribute this year.

I guess I should read the entire post, eh? :smile2: I missed that move, wasn't Deji tearing it up at CB last year?

Well I can't say I'm surprised looking at that depth chart. With Ewing down for the count we're going to need a contribution from Olatoye or Ussery, or more likely, both. Pretty sure you can't get through an entire season with two good safeties and nothing after them.

valdezj,

I'm pretty sure they have Deji backing up Perkins and Smith backing up Polk now. And while Orms is still getting some reps at safety, I think they want him to focus on nickel and would rather not move him out of it if there was an injury. That would weaken 2 positions instead of just 1.

I also believe that Sandersfeld is a much better player than people give him credit for. I worry about team speed with him in there, but he's assignment perfect and isn't afraid to hit. He'd make some plays if he was in there. Problem is that we'd have to ditch man coverages since he can't run with a receiving tight end.
