Deal may be Coming Together to Keep BYU in MWC

Rumored negotiations for a deal that would allow BYU to stay in the MWC but give them full broadcasting rights to their home football games (i.e. ESPN, BYUTV, etc.). Away games would fall under the current broadcasting arrangement on the MTN, VS, CBSC, etc.

Also sounds like the Houston to the MWC rumor is starting pick up steam and adding a MWC conference championship game. Followed by what would essentially amount to a BCS play-in game between C-USA Champ and the MWC Champ for an automatic BCS bid.

Sorry - Not trying to pepper your board with MWC info - feel free to delete this Mods if there are too many posts on this topic.

So, bee why you orchestrated this whole thing to increase their cash flow.

I would avoid granting concessions to BYU. They played their hand, and the MWC called their bluff. Any conference that starts allowing certain members rights and priveleges above and beyond what the rest of the conference receives is doomed to failure - see Mack 10.

I don't disagree with you - but at the end of the day if it opens up a path to an automatic bid - I think you have to do it.

It is an interesting concept. A play in between the MWC and Conference USA champ might get an auto bid for the winner.

At this point, I don't see BYU going anywhere, so why give up anything? The only thing that would be a problem for automatic bid status is if BYU were to leave. They're not going to leave now. Your chances at an auto bid aren't impacted one way or the other by granting BYU concessions.

My respect for Craig Thompson and the MWC increased significantly in the last two days. They trumped BYU's move. BYU is the chump in all this. Don't let them off the hook. They now need the MWC more than the MWC needs them.

Heard an interview with the Wyoming SID on the radio this morning. He was saying that the MWC's TV deal for The Molehill network is nullified if BYU pulls out of the conference. That might be pretty bad for the MWC, I'm really not sure that channel is exactly a bonanza for anybody involved in producing or carrying it... Supposedly a big part of BYU's thinking in going indy was to get out of the MWC TV deal and put their football and basketball games on BYUTV. (They already do that with non-revenue sports). BYUTV has a global reach that The Molehill doesn't.

If I were the MWC I'd give BYU an exemption to put the games on BYUTV, while keeping all the rights they have now. You might get a few viewers siphoned away from the conference broadcast to watch on BYUTV, but it's not as if many people are really watching now anyway...

I have to hand it to Thompson he has certainly directed the conference in a very steady and shrewd manner through all of this. If this in fact comes together and every MWC program comes out with a path to a BCS game then he has done above and beyond what anyone could have hoped for and the conference is stronger for it.

I do agree with the sentiments about BYU. While I hate it - I freely admit that BYU's presence as a Top 25 all time program in the MWC helps bring legitimacy to the conference. If it takes giving them broadcast rights to their home football games....so be it.

What is irritating about that is it was BYU's idea to break away from the WAC and create the damn network in the first place! I seriously question the "gentleman" running the show over there.

Giving BYU these types of concessions is probably the only way the MWC can keep them from leaving the conference. And keeping BYU is the MWC's only chance of getting an auto-bid. Therefore the MWC needs BYU more then BYU needs the MWC. The WCC would undoubtedly take them in for their non-football sports because the WCC is a non-football conference anyway.

I disagree. I think the MWC just cut BYU off at the knees. Where is BYU going to go now? There's no WAC for them to schedule independent football games with anymore. I don't think they have what it takes to go independent. Their scheduling would be a disaster. If they have any aspirations at a national championship, they won't get one by being independent.

The scheduling is the one thing that could be a problem for BYU if they decide to leave the MWC. Let's give them Army, Navy, and ND. Utah State would probably still schedule then and Weber State certainly would too, although they're I-AA (for now). They can probably schedule 1 or 2 Pac teams every year, but even at 2 Pac teams per year that still leaves 5 games to fill. After that it could get tough, they may have to travel pretty far east 2 or 3 times each season.

Note: They have future games scheduled with Hawaii, Oregon State, Boise, and now Texas, but you can probably forget about that Boise series now.

I totally agree. Why would anyone bow down to the people at BYU? If I'm the MWC I dare BYU to leave. Good luck getting any automatic bid to any bowl, let alone a BCS bowl. News flash for BYU, you guys are not Notre Dame and nobody outside of Utah cares about watching you on t.v.

If the MWC starts offering concessions now, they might as well just fold the conference and all start looking for new places to play. The Mack 10 proves that if you give to much power to one team, they will keep doing everything they can to increase their piece of the pie, regardless of conference health.

It looks like BYU might pull a Mizzou and screw themselves. And it all started because they couldn't stand playing second fiddle to Utah. What a bunch of jokers. :rofl2:

And it could get even harder for them. All of these scenerios include Notre Dame on the schedule, who says that Notre Dame would be willing to play them every year or even every other year. Notre Dame has its traditional matchups against the Big 10 schools (Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, often Purdue or Indiana,) They will play USC every year, Navy and Army. This gives them seven already. They have a big advantage over BYU in that lots of other teams want to play Notre Dame, they mean big money home or away and a lot of prestige even when they stink like recently.

Playing BYU every year would benefit BYU a lot more than Notre Dame. ND likes their status as the premium independant, beating BYU doesn't add to that, losing to BYU would diminish it. Playing BYU, unlike scheduling a lot of other teams does nothing for ND in recruiting and doesn't expand their fan base.

There is a real reason why BYU, even with their 65k stadium selling out and their TV impact with the Mormon faithful didn't even get a sniff from the PAC 10 and the Big 12 hasn't jumped to get them. If they think that by going independant they will get to call the shots they will be sadly disapointed. Their revenues won't be great even though they will probably rise somewhat, their bowl options will be limited and less than desirable, and their schedule is not going to be one to put them in the public eye like they would want.

The MWC would be best off to play hardball, given the options BYU will either back down or in the future wish they had.

Why do people think that an automatic BCS bid is such a big deal for the conference? The conference has had a member in a BCS game every year anyway. Is the guarantee that it will have a team playing even in years it doesn't deserve one really that big of a deal? Seems to me that is the type of thing that turns the country against the conference instead of loving it as an underdog. And doesn't the destruction of the WAC and contraction into the MWC ultimately hurt everyone? Last year, there were BCS bids for both TCU and Boise State. Does anyone think the MWC will ever be a 2 bid conference?

AQ Bid = guaranteed $17-20+ million per season for the conference.
"At-Large" BCS Busting = $9 million (at best) for the conference, whenever it happens.

Gotcha. I didn't know that. Basically, it's a certain $1.5 million per school (12 team league) versus the roughly $1 million per school (9 team league) that was uncertain. But it may only be that $1.5 million every-other-year if it's a play-in versus the C-USA champion. Not sure how much money that play-in game or a MWC championship game would generate, but they would definitely add to the number (more so if there were BCS implications). Plus it would help with recruiting.

Definitely be a good deal.

Certainly the game would a big deal for both conferences from an attention standpoint (and that usually leads to financial gain), as a near "playoff" type game.

Wierd that the MWC cancelled the Liberty Bowl matchup with Conference USA years ago because they thought they were "too good" for their champion to play C-USA's champ. I always thought that was one of the best bowl games (after the big ones, of course). Now things could come full-circle.

I would bet anything that Jerry Jones is front and center in these negotiations, because what gigantic primetime stadium sits pretty much at the crossroads of the MWC and C-USA?
