Bohn secured increased funding of AD from the university?

It's all over the message boards right now that the university has made a 10-year commitment to increased funding of the CU athletic department.

Reports are:

- last year 4% of the AD budget came from the university
- this year it's going to be 23% and there is a 10-year commitment to keep it at that level
- in the old days under Gee, the university went as high as 43%

Rumor is:

- this was the deal Bohn secured in exchange for towing the company line on the decision to retain Hawkins
- the move to the Pac-12 also helped to make this happen

There are also reports that Bohn has recently been able to add like 300 boosters in California. Things are looking up for us with AD funding.

This is the stuff that Bohn is a master of, and has done a great job with. Now, if he could only make a good coaching hire

Extra funding from the University. $1.5-$2.0 million from the game at OSU. Seems like somebody is saving up for something.... :smile2: :woot:

Nice. I'm gonna guess that this is the news that PB alluded to last November/December, just before the goons cut out his still-beating heart and stuffed it down his throat.

I've been waiting to learn what he was referencing, and wondered if it was the Pac 10 deal, for a while.

This should go a long way to bringing back a few sports and getting the ball rolling on some facilities upgrades.

VERY GOOD NEWS.

Since the university isnt exactly rolling in cash, I wouldn't bet on this story being anything other than message board bullsh*t. The AD budget was around 45 million dollars, so this is basically talking about the university giving the AD about 10 million a year, either by tripling the athletic fee or coming up with the money out of the President's discretionary funds, which I'm not sure still exist. Neither sounds terribly plausible considering the budget crunch the entire state is facing, and the battle the university is having to fight to keep its share of a shrinking state funding pie.

Maybe the AD has tapped some big money donors for long term funding, but the University giving the AD millions in subsidies for 10 years isn't very plausible.

Sooo, they plan on closing down the J-School, where I got my degree from, and at the same time increase funding for the football team? I'm as die-hard about my Buffs as anyone, but what the ****?

The J-school is being reorganized into other programs. It's not falling victim to any budget cuts.

They are highly unlikely to be handing the AD 10 million a year when they are laying off faculty across the board and thinking about closing whole departments/schools. And yeah, cutting the J-school budget by 8% this year and talking about laying off all non-tenured faculty in the J-school is cutting their budget. Not that they're the only ones of course.

If the University didn't want Bohn paying off Hawk with privately donated money because of the politics of the situation, what are the odds that they are going to give the AD millions out of the general budget so we can add a wrestling team or baseball or whatever? Not very likely.

If the AD wants more money they are going to have to raise it themselves, and maybe thats what this story will turn out to be.

So what happened to all the 50M contribution talk that was supposed to begin last January? Is that still in the works?

Here is the point, and I think Bohn understands this.....success on the field will allow riches in the classroom. The j-school will get as many non-tenured staff as it wants, if CU starts winning football games again. Seems unbelievably easy to me, but I left my campus democrat past behind 20 years ago....

Man, that would be nice if the rumors were true. But right now, I'm not too optimistic about the Ath Dept. I mean Bohn seems to work his arse off trying to promote the programs, but so far none of his hires have turned out to be "homeruns." That may change in the future, but in the last 5 years, CU hasnt exaclty been a national contender in much of anything except skiing or track and field.

Would be a nice boost the budget, but I think we're only dreaming.

Exactly. Bohn didn't just go to the admin and ask them to kick in som support "just because." I'm sure there was a good case made that this is an investment in the university. Going to the Pac with over 30,000 alums, a successful athletic program will renew interest in the university from those alums who have been kind of in exile.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bohn had surveyed those alums to find out what their financial interest in the University would be now that CU is a member of the Pac. He had to have gone to the admin with numbers to back up his case. He didn't just say "Pretty please!"

So (sp), the University (vague) plans on closing down the Journalism School (AP Stylebook), from which I received my degree (prepositional phrase), while simultaneously (clarity) increasing (tense) funding for the football team? I'm as die-hard about my Buffs as anyone, but what the ****?

Buffnik, you said there are reports...any links?

They were on pay sites yesterday (Rivals and AZ's Buffscoop). Rivals was the best source. dtownbuff posted that he hosted a gathering of boosters (and some new boosters to be recruited) that Mike Bohn attended. This was reported by him as coming from that meeting. It was also backed up by SD Buff (Rivals admin), who had been told exactly the same thing several months ago but held off on reporting until it was corroborated by someone else. Here's the link to the Rivals thread: http://colorado.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=422&tid=146540121&mid=146540121&sid=894&style=2

I wouldn't hold your breath. When the news came out, it seemed too good to be true. It looks like that was exactly what it was.

yes this is horrible freaking news, it will never happen, dooooom!!!!!!

Oh wait if it doesn't happen we are right back here, and haven't lost a thing, and if only part of it happens then we are ahead, yeah this sucks I am going to cry about it.

Piggy-backing on this:

It's amazing, really, that anyone is getting upset at this. At most universities, about 20% of the AD budget comes from student fees. (I think the average now is 17% but I lost my reference. US News, maybe.). The fact that we were at 4% was the problem. Throw in that our AD paid more scholarship money to the university than any other AD in the Big 12... despite having the least number of sports and fewest number of scholarship athletes. And that CU was one of the few ADs (number's under 20% of D1) that is running a balanced budget and not having to dip into reserve funds. We were under-funded and over-burdened, but we were efficient and responsible.

If we're now getting around $10 million per year from the university instead of around $2 million, then that's just in line with competitors on funding. If the university would step up with a policy that all athletic scholarships were paid for at the in-state rate, then we'd be in line on costs. At least we're making progress now. Add in the additional revenues the Pac-12 will bring and the early success of the west coast booster drive. Things are looking good and it's not because there's anything going on that's tilting the wheel toward athletics at CU... it's just balancing the scales a bit with what other universities do.

this would be a huge start, do you know if the in-state kids get the in-state rate on scholarships?

I am not great with the new math.

But if the University only paid about $2 mil to the athletic department previously -- and they are going to pump in $10 mil now, I trust our athletic department budget has just increased by $8 mil?

It's something like that. But we're also looking at a revenue decrease. Season tickets for football are down. More importantly, exit penalties for leaving the Big 12 will reduce our conference revenue by at least 50% ($4-5 million).
