Latest on Pac-12 move: $9 million and October 15 deadline?

The Big 12 Conference discussed Colorado's exit fee in a meeting Monday, but the issue remains unresolved as a target date to join the Pac-10 next year approaches.
The Pac-10, which has accepted Colorado beginning with the 2012 football season, wants to begin scheduling for 2011 by Oct. 15. In order for CU to join next year, it must negotiate an exit fee that would make it economically feasible to leave the Big 12 a year early. The current fee believed to be on the table is about $9 million, depending on variables ranging from TV appearances to a bowl game.
"We're waiting and seeing," Colorado president Bruce Benson said.
All three parties — CU, the Big 12 and the Pac-10 — would like the Buffs to join the Pac-10 next year, but unless they get help from the Big 12 on lowering the exit fee, CU will likely stay until 2012.
Benson is not panicking.
"I've negotiated deals all my life," he said. "Let's not get in a rush."
The Big 12 lost Nebraska to the Big Ten for next season and does not want to schedule an 11-team conference. The Pac-10 has announced it will be called the Pac-12 once CU joins. It has Utah of the Mountain West Conference joining next year as its 11th member and wants to have a conference title game when it has 12 members.
Colorado athletic director Mike Bohn declined to say what exit fee the school would accept, but he remains hopeful the Buffaloes will be a Pac-10 member by next season.
CU chancellor Phil DiStefano is in discussions with Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe and Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott to resolve the issue.
"I've got a lot of confidence that everybody will get the matter resolved," Bohn said. "It means a lot to us and the two commissioners in both conferences."
Beebe and DiStefano declined comment.

So it appears that it will be less than or equal to 9 million. That doesn't sound too bad.

Agreed...that makes me feel much better about CU going to the Pac-12 next season. I was thinking that this would be all done next week so it could be announced prior to the CU-Cal game and get the west coast Buffs all pumped up.

It wouldn't be a shock if the agreement is already in place and CU is playing the media in the lead up to the Cal game.

I'm guessing the number will be somewhere around $6MM when it's all said and done.

Heh, heh.

This gives me reason to turn on ole Chipper today to see if he responds to the Denver media's blasphemy since we all of course should know he is the Moses to Powers'/Dodds' God.

orangebloods.com is reporting the texas lawyers have secured the 2001 big 12 championship, due to mental anguish and loss of points caused by chris simm's interceptions.

Well, as reported by Chip and orangebloods.com today too, Mack is trying to claim Reggie Bush's 2005 Heisman for Vince Young. Those lawyers better get to work!

That's actually a no-****ter. They were talking about it on the radio today.

Here's my understanding of the situation:

We get about $9 million per year from the Big 12.

$9 million would be what we lost in revenue if we took a 50% reduction per year and stayed the 2 years. (Contract's pretty clear on the 2 years' notice we gave with the timing we gave it).

The Big 12 started by saying that if we left after 1 year, we'd have a reduction of 80% for this year and have to send them a check for 80% of last year. (about $14 million total.)

If the Big 12 is already on a $9 million number for us, that means they have already moved and just want the 2-year notice number, but in a single year. I think we'll do a bit better than that. Let's try to be patient here.

Hey, anything's better than the $45M crap Chip Brownnose has been reporting. Even if it stays at $9M, shows him to be an idot and a less-than-credible reporter. Of course ESPiN doesn't care, they still put that jackass on College Football Live on regular basis.

It seems to me like the Mack 10 doesn't really want us hanging around in 2012 any more than we want to be there. If the $9 million is the amount they would get if we did stay (and I don't think they can force us to leave sooner), it seems to me that should be the maximum amount we're talking about for a settlement here. A "we'll pay you what we would have to pay if we exercised our right to stay until 2012, and then go ahead and leave for the 12-Pac in 2011, which is what everybody really wants anyway" type settlement. From there, CU might be able to get the Mack 10 to come down even a little bit more, just to get the matter settled and avoid sending more money to the attorneys on all sides, but the $9 million really should be the ceiling here.

Agreed. The Mack 10 does not want CU hanging around for an extra year. That is one more mouth to feed and the mess of dealing with an 11 team schedule for 1 year.

Fujk em! One dollar!

The Pac 10 needs to pitch in on this one - everyone win$ if they have 12 teams next season

I suspect, although I can't say with any certainty, that they'll come in after it's all worked out and help make up for whatever we end up losing. However, they're in no rush to be making any commitments, nor should they.
