24-3, cu defense very good, offense very bad....

CU defense played well especially vs the run. Great pick by jalil and major and bonsu played great. The offense was awful. CU time and time again had drives that STARTED in CSU territory and got nothing. This should have been a 41-3 game easily. OL still making too many penalties.

Overall, we won and won easily but the offense must be better, especialy with that good field position.

The defense was was up and down, I thought. The CSU quarterback completed 70% of his passes, which was bad. The 3 INT's were very nice. The sacks to close out the game were nice, wish we could have gotten more pressure when the game was still in doubt.

Offense = bad and it still starts up front. OL gets ZERO push and for all the NFL guys we supposedly have up there, CSU's defensive line manhandled them on occasion. Also way way way too many offensive penalties.

Great victory, need to clean up the mistakes before next week though - GO BUFFS!!

We still can't figure out how to play two good halves. Whatever though, first week of the season. OL needs to get better and the offense will look a lot better imo.

Defense didn't give up any big plays which was nice to see. I thought it was a good job by them overall but Im cautious because I don't think CSU had much of a offense to begin with.

Offense is a joke. Way too many penalties. Have to clean that up. I like Clemons and Patterson speed dimension they give the team. I thought Hansen was inaccurate a few times as well. OL started to get the running game going in the 2nd half.

I agree that the OL diidn't look great today, but it's game 1 and lots of teams look bad at first. Florida looked awful against Miam(OH) today.

WWWWAAAAAYYYY too many penalties - not much has changed on that front from last year, but I'm still happy with the win.

as far as the O... i have to wonder that going into the 2nd half with a lead like that and the D playing as they did, if they didnt just take the foot off the gas pedal totaly in an attempt to not show too much to Cal.

any thoughts on that?

the 2nd half was like watching snails ****. :bang:

no matter what, not terribly impressed with the O. as said above, way too many penalties and no killer instinct in any way shape or form. i could not belive that they were not under center trying to pund the ball.

We got to clean up the penalties and dropped passes. Speedy is not an everydown RB and I like what I saw from that frosh Torres. Lockridge didn't do jack in the running game. Time to put Torres at backup and he will be ready to be the lead horse in the PAC-12.

We really took the gas off the pedal and we need to not do that but I'm still pleased about the most important thing which is a W.

Impressed by 70% completion when he threw 5 yards patterns all day? They played the frosh straight up and let him dink and dunk. We wrapped up, tackled great all day. The D was solid.

The O, specifically TH, left a lot on the field. I thought the OL played pretty damn well, two of those sacks were on Hansen for not getting rid of the ball and trying to do too much. Hopefully the penalties get cleaned up and the coaches and TH go over the film and see all they left out there. As Syko said, we should of had 4o if not a helluva lot more.

It's still a 21 point w. They play like this offensively and they'll get smoked next week at Cal. Lot of room for improvement but I was encouraged. Still not sold on this team however.

As fans at least me, I get too critical and think every drive considering the play should be a score. I just thought cu left a bunch of potential points out on the field considering where the drives started from. Happy that we won of course but wanted a bigger blowout.

One thing is for sure, patterson and clemons are playmakers and jon major is as good as advertised. Our OL needs to be more physical imho

An underwhelming victory but the defense looked very good, albeit against a bad CSU o-line. Jalil's pick before the half was awesome and I liked the subsequent play-call going for the throat, but Hansen just threw a bad pass. The receiving corps is definitely a strength now with Patterson, McKnight, and Clemons. For now the jury's still out on this team.

If Speedy goes down we're toast.

this. 70%? fine when is for about 5 yards per pass. im not too worried about that.

however, that kid is going to be good and will give CU pleanty of headaches over the next 3 years. i am not looking forward to that.

oh yeah, the mtn broadcast is a total ****ing joke. From production, to terrible homer announcers, it was like sticking needles in my urethra.

those announcers were comically bad. amazing how bad they were. other than memorizing the players names, which they didnt do correctly, i dont think they put any reasearch into this game at all. they were just comical.

That in itself shows a lack of coaching and discipline. Why would you ever let up on the gas ahead 17 - 0 at half time

Way too many pre-snap penalties. Sill not disciplined enough and I think the running game is still a major issue IMO.

I'm happy with the win, but we got issues.

It was better to listen to the radio broadcast, even when it was a full play ahead of the TV feed. The CSU fan club in the Molehill booth was THAT bad.

Between the CSU announcers and the MWC officials, it was an amateurish, small conference job all the way around.

:yeahthat: The issues are pretty much where I thought they'd be on offense. Discipline, blocking, running game and growing pains with flashes of athleticism from Hansen. I'm not sure at all where the D is. The LBs looked great, the DL got movement but still doesn't get off blocks to rush the QB well, and the secondary tackled well, which is about all CSU challenged them to do.

Still plenty of questions left to answer going into the Cal game, but I won't mind if we have a bunch of 21 point wins that piss us off this year...

On tv, the stadium appeared 2/3 empty but they were showing mostly the east side which I believe was the rammie side. Regardless, the crowd was pitiful. Glad we have this game at invesco for 9 more games.

you need one of these  at the end of that post because you are right.

If the Lammies aren't going to show up at Invesco or in the Fort, we have no business wasting our time on them...

CU didn't have to do much in this game. Its a tough game to gauge since CSU played very conservatively and CU really never had any adversity whatsoever. This was a workmanlike victory.

I'll be more interested next week at CAL to see how good the team is.

Cal's true frosh WR is putting on a clinic today and Shane Vereen is really, really good. We need to be a lot better next week. A lot better. Cal looks good.

And how about Helfrich's offense putting up 59 first half points - I don't care who the opponent is, that's just nasty.

Our LB play was freaking fantastic today. Sipili and Major were difference makers and Ahles and Beatty made plays too.

Speedy was good too today. His stats weren't great but is he much, much improved in pass blocking. There were glimmers of greatness today but it was more blah than yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!

edit...now matter how I feel about the game, there's never a reason to have Howard Dean in a CU football thread. My bad.

Another positive, the ST teams were not a weakness. Yeah, we gave up one decent punt return but Aric hit his kicks, booted the ball out of the end zone. The punted was up and down (the rugby punts were bad, like the squib kick of punts) but the punting was passible. We blocked a kick. There is lightening back on PR, just have to avoid the stupid penalties (I didn't see what Jimmy did on the PR that was a post play penalty but there should have been a face mask call on CSu on the same play.)Overall the ST plays was a B.

I don't think the offense was as bad as everyone here seems to think. They had a nice 80+ yard drive. They were spreading the ball around to a number of receivers. Speedy looked pretty good when he had the chances. I think there are two big things we need to solve. First, the false start and formation penalties are killers. Don't know what was up with the pistol formation, but they must not have read the rules correctly. They had to give up on that one after the first two formation penalties. Second, Tyler needs to tighten up his play. I honestly think Tyler being 5 percent better will be the difference between a very good offense and a passable offense. He was just a little bit off on a number of drives, either behind or too much juice. Also, he did a better job of reading the field than last year, but he still needs to get just a little better with his pocket presence and getting rid of the ball.

It was the first game for an offense that has never been game breaking, so I'm all about baby steps here.
