Next up: Cal Bears and 5* True Freshman Keenan Allen

I'm spending the week in SF with my in laws and woke up to read the SF Chronicle this morning hoping they would give a little preview of the CU game since Cal beat up on Cal Davis yesterday and nothing. They did however tout their freshman WR Keenan Allen as the next Heisman candidate. Apparently he is a stud, so hopefully he doesn't carve us up next week.

Can't wait for next weekend to arrive. Also, the article mentioned how their senior QB Kevin Riley made a lot of dumb errors during the game. I hope we show up 10k-15k strong rattle him! Go Buffs!

Allen is a stud. He was a long-time commitment to Alabama and would have had a shot at early playing time there as well before he switched to Cal. He will provide a nice early season challenge for our secondary.

Dude, are you trying to tell me that a 5* stud freshman WR is going to have a field day against Jimmy Smith who could be a first round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft next year?

I did a brief scan of the various Bear blogs out there and they remind me a lot of Allbuffers. You'd think they would be happy after beating the snot out of UC Davis, but there were was a lot of tempered optimisim out there. Here's what I found out:

QB Kevin Riley completed 70% of his passes, but not everyone is that thrilled. Apparently he had some bad incompletions, and he's burned the fans in the past so they're a bit skeptical. Guess it's tough following all those NFL first rounders.

Fans seemed to like their D. Their previous coordinator Gregory moved on to Boise State (fired or forced out???). He had an Okruh "bend don't break" philosophy, but the new guy is more aggressive. They use a base 3-4 with lots of blitzing. The D line and linebackers are the strength of the team. This will be a challenge for the Buffs, as I don't think we've played all that well versus blitzing teams.

The area for greatest concern for them is the offensive line. Apparently, the line didn't dominate UC Davis, and the holes weren't there for the backs. Pass protection was ok. The running backs were also not spectacular, but solid group (again, tough to follow Jahvid Best). This may be the best area of hope for the buffs. We've been pretty stout on the run and can hopefully turn Cal into a one dimensional team.

Unfortunatey, the one dimension might be pretty good. The Bears have three speedy wideouts and the fans are drooling over the frosh receiver that's titled in this thread (Keenan Allen). Big test ahead for our secondary and not good that our starting nickel (Orms) is out.

Finally, it seems like their special teams have sucked balls like ours in recent years. Not sure, but it appears that they had the good sense to send their sorry special teams coach packing at the end of last year. Last year kickoffs were short and returnable, with bad coverage. Sound familiar?

Overall, the media consensus was a 7th place finish for Cal in the Pac 10. This is a team that got drilled by USC, Oregon, Oregon State, and Utah last year, and then sent several players to the NFL. A good team, yes, but not the unbeatable team that some would have you believe. However, given the Buffs recent road woes (how many years until we lose the word "recent"?), it's hard to see any victories away from Folsom right now, but I'd love to shake that monkey this weekend.

Where did I say that he was going to have a field day? Obviously Jimmy is a hell of a CB.....and is capable of covering just about anyone. Saying that he is going to have his hands full is just that, he and the rest of our DB's are going to have their hands full if they are matched up with this guy. Not a knock on anyone. If you watch the video, it is obvious that Allen is big and VERY athletic....regardless of who they are playing in the vid. He is going to be a good one.

You did a nice job summing up our message boards and providing a portrait of my Bears. If you have a strong DL and backers, you should be able to punish our OL in its current form, which I would describe as PAC-10 average (or a little worse). We have an offensive lineman named Matt Summers-Gavin who was out this week. Last year, when he was in, our OL was strong (vs. Stanford, for example) and when he was out, it struggled. He is due to play next week against you, but I don't know if he'll be 100%.

By the way, Keenan Allen is not "going to be a good one," he is already a good one, possibly already a great one. He is one of those "fun to watch" guys, unless you are pulling for the other team.

The Bears were overhyped last year, and probably underhyped this year. We are good, but beatable, especially if MSG is out.

The only think I am sure of is, we'll both learn a heck of a lot about our respective teams following this past week's blowout wins against inferior opponents.
