When does Benson let Bohn do what Bohn rightly wanted to do last year and fire Hawk.

It is clear that all the hopes for a change in how this team plays haven't come to pass. We still can't get a play called, line up, and run it without screwing up. I saw confusion on the field with players discussing alignment frequently. We had a bunch of penalties again and they we mostly errors of confusion and/or lack of focus. The coaching staff had no clue how to adjust to even Cal's base defenses.

Now we have an embarassing loss (on top of all the prior embarrassing losses,) a fan base that is moving from anger to apathy, and a team that has clearly already lost faith and confidence in their ability to compete.

I can understand the political realities that made Benson save him last year but at this point we are close enough to the election that it is not going to grow into a campaign issue. The damage that is being done to the program and to the revenue potential of the program is bad enough that it can't be ignored.

Let's hope that Benson comes to his senses and let's this happen sooner than later

Bohn is not going to let Benson make this call forever. I understand that politics and money caused Benson to over rule Bohn at the end of last season, but there's going to come a point when Bohn decides that the buyout is coming from the AD budget (or AD boosters) and ultimately it's his call. He's got all the leverage right now if he decides to fire Hawk - can you imagine the political fallout if Benson fires Bohn for firing Hawk, I just don't see Benson tying himself to Hawk like that, it would be political suicide.

The decision to not fire Hawkins was made last year. The circumstances this year are totally different. Relax. Benson wants a successful program as much as anyone. But he has to run things like a business, as he should. He doesn't have unlimited funds like Texas.

I think this is going to be a much different situation.

First, Benson and the whole gang were at the game to see what they've done. By all accounts, they're not pleased.

Second, the political issues that clouded the last situation are largely over. University cuts are announced and in work.

Third, and most importantly, this isn't the way anyone wants to go into the Pac 10. The faculty, AD, and administration are all on board with the Pac 10, and no one wants to be associated with this embarrassment.

The only question is when and who will replace him.

Bull****. He does need to run things like a business, and he has not been. He has been running it like a politician. Any business man worth a sheet would have canned Hawk last year, or at the very least, sat Dan down and made some concessions for him to keep his job. The decision to keep Dan and make no staff changes is going to hurt us for a long time. Not only does the program get weaker, we lose more and more interest from the fans with every game. No business can afford to lose as many customers as we are losing from this one decision, and the way back is going to be a tough and expensive one. It will cost way more than $3M to make things right, again.

You said it way better than I. You are right on the dinero, amigo.

DiStefano: "8 wins and a good bowl".

unless things get much MUCH better. i have no worries the chopper is being dusted off. it's not going to be this week or even this month (unless we get hatchet-****ed by Hawaii, maybe).

Bohn's career is on the line with each loss.....he's gonna need to sever the tie to Hawk to keep pulling a CU check.

 OK, put the numbers together for me and show me the profit and loss in keeping him versus firing him. And, sure, politics was involved as well. That is the real world, pal. Benson is in a complex position and its easy for us to sit on a cloud and judge him. But all that aside, Hawkins will be fired if he doesn't have a major turn around.

If an employee is stealing from your company they are fired. No matter who they are, or what the financial situation is. Hawk is not only stealing from us, but is taking dumps all over our athletic department and reputation. fire the ass clown now, and run him out of town. **** him.

I talked to Benson last year after Hawk pulled his Houdini. Benson way underestimates the benefit of having a winning football program at CU. He knows the team is important, but he doesnt realize how much. I personally know of at least a $M worth of donations that dried up this year due to the decision, and there are more people that feel the same way. Benson thinks it is because of the economy, at least that is what he says in public.

No disrespect to you whatsoever. Benson isn't going to give you or me or most anyone on this board anything but the company line. Unless you're his illigitimate son. You aren't. Are you?

Fatbuff is absolutely correct on this one. Ask any of the accountants or business administration majors on this site about the valuation of "goodwill." Goodwill is the positive image that a business has with its customers and potential customers that can be expected to result in future revenues.

On a short term basis retaining Hawkins with result in measurable financial loses. CU is not one of those schools with the majority of its stadium pre-sold in season tickets, in fact CU relies heavily on individual game ticket sales and in virtually all games the walk-up determines the final attendance taly. With the image of this program in the community at the moment I don't see positive responses in terms of selling tickets the rest of the season. Decreased attendance not only gets counted in reduced ticket revenue (and heavier discounting trying to fill seats) but also in reduced parking, concession, soveigniers, etc. Our pathetic showing is also not good news for any additional dates in which networks are deciding which games to televise.

On a longer term basis, the best source of future season ticket holders are those who are purchasing single game tickets now. If they are not purchasing or if they are not getting what they percieve as value they aren't going to buy. This doesn't even go into the impact on donations.

I still don't understand why people are giving Mike Bohn a free pass in all of this. This was his "homerun" hire after all.

Hawkins was one of the hot comodities in the coaching market when he was hired. Come on. There would be a ton of hypocrites out there if they started blaming Bohn for hiring Hawkins. The extension is a bit more easy to go after him on. But even the extension was understandable at the time. BTW, I'm not a big Bohn fan. I think he's way too rah rah and not enough substance. Kind of like Hawk. :smile2:

Well, whatever. Hawkins should have been shown the door last year but he wasn't.

Hawkins was the right hire at the time.....just not a good one as proven. he was going to get a BCS job somewhere. turns out it was here. who knows, if Peterson comes along as OC....maybe this is all different?

So how many chances will Bohn get?

Can this program survive another ****ty coach?

I'm not sure it can survive this ****ty coach. But like DBT said, I really don't think you fire Bohn for hiring a guy 90% of athletic directors would have hired if in the same position at the time...

How many big school AD's get two chances to hire a football coach? I'm not sure, but it can't be a lot.

IMO our expectations as fans have dropped drastically. I think there's an attitude of "MB is probably the best CU can do, so we should be happy to have him". It's kind of like the attitude that the Media/Officials/NCAA is out to get us. Sorry if I don't buy that. I think we should set the bar just a little bit higher. I know Dick Tharp was a ****ty AD. But he shouldn't be the bar that we compare all future AD's to.

Yes Slade. I know CU will never have the funds or support like your dear ol' Sooners. I do think that there's nothing wrong with expecting a little bit more from our athletic dept. jmo. Didn't Bohn himself say the BuffClubs numbers were like 65% Non Alums? There is something seriously wrong with that imo. Am I wrong?

Maybe Liver can set me straight on this issue.

Seriously?? He had one hire, which most if not all people (and no not just buff fans) thought was a good to great hire. Hawk was going to coach at a major BCS school no matter what and was likely the best choice out there at the time. Mike Bohn has done a great job in all other aspects of AD, so I think it is extremely stupid to think he should be fired for the Hawk hire.

ftfy :wow::lol:

accident that Dolan's down the hill on Arapahoe went out of business after Tharp stepped down? Those martini lunches were keeping that place going....until the tax fraud.

Seriously. He's made questionable hires every stop he's made as an AD. I don't understand why he's so untouchable with some folks. Sorry if you think that's extremely stupid.

I don't think Bohn is getting a pass on Hawk, I've heard plenty of Fire Bohn talk too, but I think it's the wrong reaction to a losing football program. From my perspective, Hawk (despite being viewed as a good hire initially) has turned out to be a bad hire and I think even Bohn understands this and would replace him yesterday if he thought it was the right thing to do for CU.

Bohn cerainly deserves criticism for the Hawk hire and the extension which was probably knee jerk. It's no secret that I think Bohn is a very good AD and that I don't think his job performance should be judged on the football coach's record. I think he's done enough right as our AD for his job to be safe. His next HC hire will ultimately be his legacy IMO and for right or wrong his job will be tied to how well the next coach works out.

In short, I like Bohn and I do think he deserves to hire the next football coach. It better be the right hire.

His track record before CU bothers me a lot more than the fact that he chose Hawk. That's a good point. But Bohn has done a lot of good things in terms of rebuilding relationships with donors, marketing the programs, getting the 12 Pac deal done, getting more funding for the AD, starting to change the image of the AD after the "scandal", etc. Unfortunately, the exceptionally ****ty choice of Hawk has been working against him. Hard. But I think he's done enough good things, starting from a terrible position (if anybody took over a job that was "burned to the ground" it was Bohn, not Sir Talks-a-lot...) that he's earned enough to get the chance to hire Hawk's replacement.

Besides, the alternative is hiring the right AD and having him hire the right coach. Seems to me like you're just kind of doubling the risk there...
