With a new HC, what kind of offense should that coach bring along?

As someone who watched Bill McCartney's option based teams in the past, I still have a heart for the running game and the idea of Belloti does excite me given how the Ducks are an option spread type of team but I wonder if Belloti would be able to bring that kind of offensive philosophy to Boulder since he wouldn't be able to simply coax Chris Kelly to pull a Lane Kiffin and come to Boulder. We could maul those Pac-12 defenses with that kind of offense with recruits from not only California but Texas as well.

I don't see that much of a need to revamp the defense dramatically at this point.

I just want one with an identity. I want him to have a "system" and run that same system week after week. Ideally, that system is based on (talented) players we can recruit to play here

I personally want a bruising O line... I hate watching spread offense... Seeing how we are going to the Pac, I figure it's likely we'll pass a Lot.

Bring back smashmouth football.

It's the best way to win in the Pac-12. We need to be different.

Something that takes advantage of the altitude and wears our defenses.

Seriously - I don't give a ****, so long as it works.

I really think that run-oriented offenses are largely a thing of the past. With a small number of exceptions like GT, good teams rake up yards through the air.

You see the numbers for CU when they run for 200 yds and out run their opponets? Time to run the ball but an offense more like 94. 2 te's and an OL that can pound you.

Also, back to the 3-4 defense.

The spread is the hottest system in the country. Of all the elite teams, about the only ones who don't run it are USC and Alabama. Plus, the Pac 12 has teams that score points like crazy, slingin' the rock all over the field. So until the D comes around, the spread gives you the best chance to hang in there in shoot-outs against Cal, Oregon and Washington.

I'm down for that. If we had Chris Brown at RB...he would have gotten 200 yds on the Cal D. It seems like a lot of Pac-10 offenses are built that way. With CU's location not being far from Texas, I think we could really revive our recruiting there with the right coach.

The need to be different could be a good thing...look at Texas Tech under Leach in the early part of the 2000s decade. TT won because they were different.

I'm for that too. We need those big & ugly blocking TEs again like we had under Barnett.

Not trying to pimp my own thread but I like what Oregon State does on offense. They run the ball and throw the deep passes.

CU football has ALWAYS been its best when it has a good, powerful, yard-generating RUSHING GAME.

I do not mind throwing the ball. CU needs to have the ability to pass the ball. But CU has always been best when they have had a punishing, bruising rushing game.

my sentiments too.

i like 3 yards and a cloud of dust tho. Mac said the spread option is the natural progression of the option, and sounds like what he'd run.

Mac is very much correct. I prefer what Oregon does in the spread myself and thats not easy to say because I hate ****ing Oregon. We would have to get the right pieces but it would work.

McElwain is a little bit too much "flash in the pan" for me.

Two years as an offensive coordinator at Alabama. (And is McElwain the OC, or is Saban?) Before that one year as offensive coordinator at Fresno.

Not nearly the type of seasoning I would want for my new head coach.

Fresno had some good teams a few years back. Was he there when they were decent?

he was a good offensive coordinator for fresno as well. and 2 years of being OC learning under saban looks pretty damn good on the resume to me. saban is probably the best head coach in college football

Not a McElwain fan... Bama looks good so far this year, but for all the talent they have, they run a very vanilla offense. Last year they struggled alot on O. One game last year (don't remember which) they were blowing the D line back and picking up huge chunks of yardage on the ground. Probably 3 or 4 times they got inside the 10, and McElwain called at least 6 or 7 fades to Julio Jones... not a single one worked, finally decided to run the ball, TD. Guy just isn't a great coach IMO. Oh and BTW, Saban is a defensive mastermind, never been particularly impressed with what he has had offense wise. It's also nice for McElwain to have the best D in college FB helping his offense out. Lots of better guys out there than McElwain.

I'd like to see an offense that includes a fullback, and see some power I formations. Multiple tight-end sets would be nice. A spread would ONLY be good if we have/recruit a quarterback with a howitzer attached to his shoulder.

Our defense can be very good with a consistent offense. If CU had a consistent offense along with an idenity, we will not be talking about Hawkins being on the hot seat for sure.
