Anyone see this week's Experts?

Colorado football was the topic of Campus Connection. Very interesting points made.

Mike Bellotti discussed:
1. Cal being underrated and a very good football team.
2. Likes Dan Hawkins. "He's a very, very good football coach."
3. Outdated facilities make recruiting difficult.
4. Have been good so it can happen.
5. Assistant coaches only get one year contracts so no security and consistencyfrom year to year. Always looking for a job.
6. Revenue needs to increase. "Can't pay the tariff to get out of Big 12 next year."

Charles Arbuckle (former UCLA linebacker)
1. Doesn't see the players "by in" to the program and playing hard.
2. Cal is a difficult team to play early because they start year like barn burners and then fade at end of season.
3. Recruiting has seemed to decrease in California and Texas.

Jesse Palmer
1. School creates a competitive disadvantage for Colorado football coach.
a. Must declare a major. Strong academics.
b. Noise ordinance on campus. Difficult to go on road when haven't practiced with noise. Causes lots of mistakes.

Pat Forde (I believe a sports writer lived in Colorado)
1. Different mentality in Colorado. Enjoy football but not obsessed.
2. No Mega Money boosters to develop program like occurs at Texas, Oklahoma, Oregon. You could get away with this in the past but not any more.

Very interesting. Might be able to find it archieved on the web.

These must be all the coaches D2D has been talking to all these years.

I get so sick of this "one year contract" bull****.

EVERY STATE EMPLOYEE IS A ONE YEAR EMPLOYEE. THAT'S LAW!!!! That's how it is in Oklahoma, that's how it is in Colorado, that's how it is in Kansas, that's how it is in Texas - that's how it is EVERYWHERE.

That is the biggest RED HERRING ever! It is VERY RARE for assistant coaches to receive a multi-year contract - ANYWHERE. The fact of the matter is, I have NEVER EVER EVER seen an assistant coach - ANYWHERE - be terminated just because of the one year contract. NEVER. Assistant coaches get fired, promoted, moved around, etc. due to their PERFORMANCE.

The fact of the matter is, if D 2 Dan was so concerned about his assistant coaches - he would have taken LESS MONEY and gone out and hired some GOOD COACHES instead of bringing all his dead weight from Boise.

Really? The Broncos sellouts (especially) during all those early years were the result of non-obsessed fans? Clearly, the coaching profession is self-protective.

You sure about that rant buddy?

Ucla has three assistants on multi-year deals, so does Cal, so does oregon, and so does kansas, hell Okie light appears to have 9 guy on multi-year deals.

I'm pretty sure that the 1-year contracts is Colorado specific due to TABOR.... but I may be wrong about that.

Good stuff, thanks for posting.

- on the facilities front, I'm not sure what Cal had for practice facilities and weightrooms, etc.. but their actual stadium is a dump. I've heard that the rest of the Pac10 schools (outside of Oregon) aren't exactly top notch either, but maybe that's not accurate. Granted, if we want to compete for national championships, just comparing to P10 schools isn't gonna get it done.
- on the one year contract deal, I just don't see how that's such an issue. Pay them enough money and it shouldn't matter, especially if they can perform
- on Hawkins being a good coach. Uhh, what??
- on revenue needing to increase, absolutely agree. would help if we could win or at least not look like a joke on the field when we get 7k fans to travel. It's just a hunch that it might help generate support that would result in further ticket sales and donation $$. But in general, this is our #1 issue. More money and Danny isn't here. More $$ and we have top notch facilities & coaches.
- can't argue with the players not buying in. of course, it's hard to tell what they should be buying into since it's far from obvious what Danny is selling
- I think we've done okay in recruiting CA for #'s, maybe not for top tier talent though. Absolutely agree that we have failed miserably in recruiting TX
- it's been a while since I was at CU, but I thought you could declare A&S as your general area of studies and then by the junior year had to declare your major? Maybe not.. either way, is it that big a deal to pick something and then change later?
- noise ordinance is an interesting point. I don't buy that it's the entire reason we suck on the road, but it definitely wouldn't help. I'm assuming having the mythical indoor practice facility building would cure this (along with the prior "poor" facility knock)
- Can't argue too much with Forde's points. We don't appear to have the donors that give huge amounts of money, and we don't appear to have lots of donors that give reasonably sizable chunks of money. There is no statewide obsession with CU football in CO, rather that football obsession lives with the Broncos. That said, there is nothing to say that we shouldn't be able to draw fans and pull in at least 50-55k for every game. I think Oregon has a similar sized stadium and that manages to be a loud & passionate environment. Size isn't everything, or so I'm told

The noise ordinance is bull****. I walked by Folsom last Tuesday around 9:30 am, and they had simulated crowd noise throughout the stadium while they were practicing.

Sure doesn't sound like an audition to be the next HC, does it?

I'm always suspicious of a new Allbuffs poster who appears out of nowhere, in the darkest of times with a single, relatively positive post.

It smells just like Athletic Department damage control to me.

Seriously, why start posting now? Why start posting that? "Hey guys, for no reason in particular, I just got motivated to join a CU fan chat site. I'm just so darn excited about the product we're seeing on the field right now, I thought I'd share the opinion of a bunch of guys who are so embarrassed for our once proud program that they're compelled to be uncomfortably polite..."

If the AD was smart they'd sign up a bunch of member names in january , then trot them out when they need spin. They could all start by saying, "long time lurker, first post" sort of stuff to at least provide the semblance of credibility.

But anyway, welcome to MSBufffans.

I saw this piece the other day and was wondering about the accuracy of Palmer's comments regarding the noise ordinance and players having to declare a major. Any truth to either of these statements?

Jesse Palmer is as dumb as he looks and sounds. I will be looking for a drool rag the next time I see him. He should be Sarah Palin's speech writer.

Cody tweeted first thing last Tuesday or Wednesday to apologize ahead of time to the students since they'd be doing simulated stadium noise at Folsom that morning. There's absolutely nothing to that complaint.

As far as declaring a major, you have to do that at every NCAA program by the time you enter your third year. That's how eligibility is determined based on progress toward your degree. CU is no different. I just went to the CUbufffs.com site and went to the roster. The first redshirt freshman I cam across (David Bakhtiari) is in his 2nd year at CU and is listed as "Undeclared". I checked a few others and two 2nd year guys (Bonsu & Darden) had declared a major while the third had not (Thornton). There seems to be absolutely nothing to this one either.

Hmm... not sure about the "must declare a major" thing; I'm pretty sure different schools have rules as to how long you hvae to declare a major. In short, it allows guys to be stashed in underwater basketweaving type classes until they graduate.

As for the noise ordinances, I think to what they are referring is the practice fields, which are right next to student family housing. I remember in the GB days there were several times when there were noise complaints from the families in this housing and they had to shut down the simulated crowd noise. I believe that is to what they are referring. However, this problem solves itself if you get a permanent indoor facility.

From the Recruitipedia I did, here is the NCAA rule:

Eligibility (Progress Toward Degree): Student-athletes must be enrolled in a minimum full-time program of studies, be in good academic standing as defined by their college or university, and make satisfactory progress toward a bachelor's degree. Full-time is generally defined as 12 hours per semester for Undergraduate students and 9 hours per semester for Graduate students.

24 hours must be earned before the student enters the 2nd year of enrollment. Up to 6 credit hours per academic year may be earned during the summer. The student athlete must declare a major leading to a degree by the beginning of his third year in school. From that point, the 40%/60%/80% rule applies. In order to remain eligible for competition, student-athletes must satisfactory complete a certain percentage of course requirements in the specific degree program based on the student's year in residence:

By the start of 3rd year - 40%
By the start of 4th year - 60%
By the start of 5th year - 80%

another red herring. CU doesn't have to comply with Boulder ordinances. They can tell Boulder to go eff themselves.

That's actually true. While CU tries to be a good neighbor, things like Boulder ordinances for building height don't apply since it's state property.

This is the kind of thing that Plati should be ALL OVER. HE needs to be refuting these moronic statements. He needs to be demanding retractions. He needs to be getting out the truth. Instead, he's concentrating on insulting the students.

That's a good point because people hear this and of course they believe it since it was on ESPN. And Plati has to be aware that this show took a few minutes to discuss CU.

A strong coach that got paid a good salary with a long-term contract and produced on the field, would provide all the necessary "security" that his assistants need to be comfortable with their job status year-to-year.

I 100% would support being able to offer multi-year contracts to the OC, DC, and maybe 2 other "key coaches" (OL and DL/LB?), but I would never want those contracts to exceed the HC's term (or even a reduced buyout if the HC is fired).

With that said, our assistants worry about their job security because Danny boy is the HC and not producing. They shouldn't have job security in this case.

If we had a Kirk Ferentz, Greg Schiano, Randy Edsall, Jeff Tedford, or hell even a Gary Pinkel type HC that "owned his job" and at least had their teams competitive year-in-year-out, then those assistants would know that as long as they did what the HC asked their job would be secure because his was. I am not including the "big time" guys like Paterno, Tressel, Beamer, Brown, and Stoops because that isn't fair at this point.

At this point the only coach I feel any loyalty to is Brian Cabral. I love that Hagan is here too, but most of that is "wishful thinking" and not based on his on-field/recruiting results. I like what Ron Prince has brought to the program, but it is too early to draw too much of an opinion.
