California drops baseball program

I was reading somewhere that the Cal athletic department receives somewhere in the area of $12MM/Year in subsidies directly from the university. They are trying to pare that down to $5MM. CU gets zero. That may change with the new deal that Bohn has supposedly worked out with the admin, but even at $5MM/Year, CU could add a couple sports like Wrestling and Gymnastics.

Gymnastics Lol! Would love to see CU add some more sports especially baseball once the football team finally has its facilities up to par i.e. practice facility and stadium renovations. Would much rather get all that done and out of the way and set us up for long term success with revenue producing sports than waste our money on trying to get some more random money sucking sports added.

Title 9 Austinbuff.

Exactly that's why there should be no rush to add a bunch of sports. Get the once we have competitive first and get the facilities in order then you can add womens lacross to to go with mens baseball or whatever 1+1 combo you want

I agree but damn, I want a baseball team.

me too - fun to watch and would also help bring in a couple more football recruits who also play baseball

Totally agree on waiting - CU not add any sports until we have our current revenue generating sports where they should be.

I agree that it's too early to talk seriously about adding sports. Once the dust settles on the Pac 12 move and we have made the necessary facilities upgrades to the sports we currently have, then we can look at adding sports. My original comment was meant to show that Cal is still subsidizing their athletic department to the tune of approx. $5MM/year. That's $5MM/year that CU does not give to it's athletic department. $5MM/Year would fund a lot of sports if we wanted it to.

Sucks for the Cal baseball alums, including:

Jeff Kent, Xavier Nady, Bob Melvin, Darren Lewis, Kevin Maas, Lance Blankenship...

I think they'll be sorry they cut baseball. I can understand the rest. We cut baseball in 1980 and have been trying to get it back ever since. It's a lot harder to bring a program back than it is to just let it twist in the wind for a few years while you get your financial house in order.

And get Folsom Field to the 60k range as well.

They could get into the 60's pretty easily. They need to be in the 70's or even the 80's to make a real difference. Of course, they have to be able to sell those tickets, too. That's the tough part.
